Stanley George Stephens (1911-1986), known as "Steve," joined the faculty of North Carolina State College of Agriculture and Engineering (later North Carolina State University) in 1949, serving first as a professor of agronomy, then as head of the Faculty of Genetics from 1951 to 1957. In 1967 he became the first NC State faculty member elected to the National Academy of Sciences. He retired in 1974 as a professor emeritus after 25 years at the university.
