Beathe Family Papers 1978-1983

The Saabeq Maalouf family tree was compiled and printed at the expense of the late Dr. Hanna Elias Maalouf in Montreal, Canada, in 1983, as a dedication to the people of his village. See the book Qaryati ʿUyoun al-Wadi' (“My Village, Springs of the Valley") for more information about the history of the family. The book Qaryati ʿUyoun al-Wadi was written in 1978 by Dr. Hanna Elias Maalouf. The book is written in several languages including Arabic, Spanish, French, and English.

The Saabeq Maalouf family originated in Beka, Lebanon and settled in Oyoun Al Wadi in the early 18th century. Oyoun Al Wadi is a rural village located in the Wadi al-Nasara (Valley of the Christians) region of Syria. It is located northwest of Homs in the Homs Governorate.

The family tree illustrates the emigration of the Saabeq Maalouf family to places in Central America, South America, and North America. The family tree shows generations of the Saabeq Maalouf family from the 1700’s to 1978. It traces the history of seven generations of the family. Dr. Hanna Elias Maalouf visited the village and spoke with many of the older residents, gathering their recollections about their ancestry. Through this oral history, he was able to piece together the origins and early history of the village. The family tree illustrates how family members have dispersed across the world. In some cases, there are gaps, indicating that the fate or whereabouts of certain individuals were unknown.

This collection was donated by Nastaha Beathe. She noted that the family tree includes her paternal grandfather whose name was Gabriel. He went by the name “Bou Ali”. It is interesting to note because that is a Shiite Muslim name and the family were Orthodox Christians. Gabriel immigrated to the the Caribbean island of Trinidad. Natasha Beathe was born here. His brother immigrated to Venezuela.These countries were not indicated on the family tree. The family tree only has the male children and Gabriel had three sons: Ralph, Robert and Victor. Natasha Beathe’s father was Ralph. The family tree ends with his generation, however if the tree had continued until today it would have three more generations.

This collection is made up of family tree materials including one family ancestry book called "Dr. Hanna Elias Maalouf Mon Village Ouyoun El Wadi". The collection also includes a hand drawn family tree document created by Dr. Hanna Elias Maalouf in 1978.
