Not everything can fit inside a resume or even a cover letter; this is where a professional online portfolio can delve deeper into your experiences, accomplishments, and personality. Portfolios are useful for any type of position, such as industry jobs, government jobs, and academic jobs. In this workshop, we will walk through how to create your site, how to organize the information, what information and documents to include, and how to create an overall personal brand. Using examples of portfolio sites for academics and industry applicants, we will help you create your own site using wix.com.
Please make sure you have access to your resume/CV and any documents you believe would help strengthen your site (e.g. videos of you teaching, photos of you in a lab, syllabi lessons or you’ve designed, deliverables you’ve created, etc.). There will be workshop time for questions and guidance toward the end of the session.
Bethany Van Scooter is a second year Master's student in the English department's Rhetoric and Composition program, as well as a first year writing instructor and Graduate School student assistant for the Office of Postdoctoral Affairs. When she's not teaching writing, talking about writing, or writing about writing, she enjoys playing video games with her husband, snuggling her cats, and reading Nancy Drew novels. Bethany plans to graduate in May 2020 and is hoping to continue her research in second-language writing and writing theory abroad in Japan. Additionally, she hopes to continue teaching writing at the higher education level.
