Abstract:

This folder contains personal photographs of Dr. Carl Schenck. The dates on the photographs range from 1905 to 1954. The majority of the photographs are from the period 1905 to 1912. This collection includes formal studio portraits of Dr. Schenck and informal photographs of Dr. Schenck at the Biltmore Forestry School at Sunburst, N.C. and on the Biltmore holdings in North Carolina. There are also photographs of a bust of Dr. Schenck.

Historical Note

Carl Alwin Schenck was born in Germany on March 25, 1868. He studied forestry in Germany and received his Phd. in 1895. Dr. Schenck came to North Carolina in 1895 and served as the forester of George W. Vanderbilt's Biltmore Estate until 1909. In 1898 he founded the Biltmore Forest School. The school was located at the Biltmore Estate from 1898 to 1909. From 1910 to 1913 the school operated out of the village of Sunburst, N.C. The Biltmore Forest School was closed in 1913, after graduating 400 students. In World War I, Dr. Schenck served with the German Army on the Russian front, where he was wounded and incapacitated. Throughout the 1920's and 1930's Dr. Schenck conducted forestry tours throughout Germany and Switzerland. During this period he also lectured at several forestry schools in the United States. He resided in Germany during World War II and was appointed chief forester of the state of Hessen by the American Military Government in 1945. Dr. Schenck revisited the United States in 1951, when he recieved many honors and accolades from the alumni of the Forest School. He died in Germany on May 17, 1955.

Office and Myself, Summer 1909
Item Description: This is a photograph of Dr. Schenck's office. Upon arriving at the Biltmore Estate in 1895, Dr. Schenck's office was the second floor of Charles McNamee's office building in Biltmore village. In 1901, George Vanderbilt built an office building for Dr. Schenck on the north bank of the Swannanoa River. The office contained a large classroom, a small anteroom, Schenck's office, and a small clerk's room. Dr. Schenck is standing at the left. Elizabeth [] is seated on the porch. "Office and Myself. Cabin on Big Creek

"Cabin on Big Creek at foot of Pisgah in Henderson County built for me in 1895 by William Crawford for $28. At that time, not a tree had been cut in the primeval woods. Adele & I have spent a week at this cabin in 1896."
