Subject.- Tightness of control rods in sheaths.

A spring balance was used to obtain the following data.
Rod 1 grams to move Rod 2 grams to move
11001000
11001400
10001450
10001400
10501000
10001500
1600
1100
1550

The different readings were obtatned at different angualar positions
In order to obtain a quick relaase from the magnets, it is necessary
to use the minimum current that will do the job. It is evident
that a frictional force which may be as great as 50 percent of the
weight needs to be reduced. Also, the shock absorbers are supposed
to furnish the necessary air cushioning over the last inch of travel
consequently air cushioning in the sheaths is undesirable.
