Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Initiative to develop a repository-agnostic ETD submission system.
Overview
ETD Workflows is a repository-agnostic ETD management application developed in cooperation with the NC State University Graduate School. ETD Workflows provides a flexible, dashboard-based interface facilitating communication between the ETD Administrator and degree candidates. Public access to ETDs is provided via DSpace. The separation of submission processes and ETD archiving supports a more modular approach to both activities and allows for a more customizable experience. This project falls under the direction of the NC State University Libraries Digital Repository Management Committee and is part of the NC State University Libraries Digital Repository
How We Did It
The legacy ETD repository architecture at NC State was based on a heavily customized installation of ETD-db from Virginia Tech. ETD Workflows is a PHP/AJAX/MySQL application and has been tested on Linux and Solaris 10. The architecture is modular and supports plugins for components that are likely to be localized including authentication, metadata population, and repository/catalog object export. The NC State PeopleSoft plugin populates all metadata from the campus information system mitigating the errors inherent in user-entered data. ETD Workflows is designed to capture the digital paper trail describing the ETD process from submission to acceptance. Ancillary content and supporting datasets are supported, as well.
Public access is provided via DSpace. Embargoed submissions are managed by the ETD Workflows software until the embargo period expires.
