In February, eight Libraries staff volunteered at the Diaper Bank of North Carolina as part of a program called On the Spot, helping package feminine hygiene products for women and girls in our community. A significant portion of low-income girls and women in the United States do not have affordable access to the products they need each month. On the Spot seeks to provide this access while maintaining a sense of dignity to women and girls.

On the Spot allows existing community partners to offer period products to clients who may also be receiving diapers. The program also supplies Durham Public Schools at all levels with pads, tampons, and girls underwear so that young women can focus on their learning instead of their basic hygiene. They’re expanding that school-based intervention to Wilmington and Winston-Salem.

Big thanks for our Libraries volunteers: Pete Schreiner, Laura Abraham, Caroline Hallam, Silvia Sheffield, Dawn Fulton, Claire Leverett, Shelby Hallman, and Debbie Currie.
