Two years ago, the NCSU Libraries adopted a small stream running through Centennial Campus. Twice a year, Libraries staff walk the stream, picking up trash, looking for pollution sources, and generally noting the health of the environment. The Raleigh Stormwater Management Division records the stream’s condition, and provides safety vests, vinyl gloves and trash bags.
Five staffers—Hilary Davis, Shaun Bennett, Margaret Peak, Erik Olson, and Tory Gibler—took part in mid-November, picking up five full bags of trash, along with some oddities including a steel bar, a straw hat, an ancient purse, and some huge cardboard tubes.
“We've been doing this for two years now, and the stream looks healthier each year,” Bennett said. “This time we saw huge numbers of animal tracks including deer and raccoons.”
