NC State's Department of Computer Science celebrates its 50th anniversary this year. The department was established within the School of Physical Sciences and Applied Mathematics in 1967. In the fall of that year instruction began in the department with 21 declared undergraduate majors and 460 students. The first department chair was Paul E. Lewis. Graduate degrees were first offered in the department during the 1970s. More information about the history of computer science at NC State can be found on the department's website.
