Fifty years ago at the 1968 Summer Olympics in Mexico City, NC State's Steve Rerych won gold medals in the 4 x 100 freestyle and 4 x 200 freestyle swimming competitions. Rerych graduated from NC State in 1969 with a BS in zoology. While a student, he was a three-time All-American and nine-time ACC champion.
Rerych earned a medical degree from Columbia University and did an intership at Duke University. He has practiced as a surgeon in North Carolina and West Virginia.
He has been inducted into the North Carolina Sports Hall of Fame and the NC State Athletics Hall of Fame. There is a youtube video of his accomplishments made for the NC State Hall of Fame induction.
