Professor Timothy Buie from the Industrial Design program in the College of Design and Dr. Michael Young from the Department of Computer Science have been awarded the 24th annual NCSU Libraries Faculty Award for the pioneering work they led in a collaborative course that explored the technologies and spaces in the new James B. Hunt Jr. Library .
The annual award is given to NC State faculty members who have contributed consistently and notably to the Libraries' mission, vision, and strategic initiatives.
Over a year before the new building was scheduled to open, Buie and Young--long time collaborators with the NCSU Libraries--led their students in a combined advanced design and computer engineering capstone course to develop an innovative video game scaled to the giant display walls in the Hunt Library. College of Design professor Scott Townsend ”one of the nominators of his colleagues for the award ”also helped to develop and lead the course.
The students in the collaborative course also tackled the very real-world challenges of how users will interact with such a novel space and unique library, providing valuable plans on how to design the Hunt Library "experience" so that the spaces and technologies in the building could be intuitively navigated when the space opens on January 2, 2013.
Professor Young is featured in a recent NCSU Libraries' video on the transformative effect that the large display walls in the Hunt Library will have on student and faculty work on campus when the new library opens.
