I'm choosing The Lottery and Other Stories by Shirley Jackson as the best book I read in 2017, mostly because it surprised me so much. I pick up a lot of heavy books each year and often get exactly what I expect or less. With the Lottery et al, I expected to get a chill or two, but mostly a break from deep thinking. Instead, along with a couple of creepy turns, I got several very observant slices of life, beautifully written with some subtle hooks and barbs.
