This is the first novel from a new California writer and it is the brutal story of the survival of a teenage girl, Turtle. If the reader can get beyond the first few graphically harsh chapters, he/she will be cheering for a positive outcome for this tough-as-nails young narrator who battles her mentally ill father, the memory of her mother, and a society that fails to recognize her. I think Tallent is a fabulous writer with more stories to tell. I look forward to reading more.
