The NCSU Libraries Fellows Program
The NCSU Libraries Fellows program offers a unique opportunity to a select group of recent M.L.S. and M.I.S. graduates. Fellows will be appointed at the rank of faculty librarian for a two-year term from July 2018 through June 2020. An option for January or September placement may be available, depending upon graduation date. Ninety-five percent of Fellows have been offered academic positions or have entered doctoral programs upon completion of the Program. Many former Fellows, including five named as Library Journal Movers and Shakers, are recognized as leaders in the field, adding to the reputation of the Program as a training ground for library trailblazers.
What do NCSU Libraries Fellows work on?
The NCSU Libraries is well known for its technological advances and commitment to defining the future of librarianship. We seek out candidates with interests and aptitudes in these areas and Fellows’ assignments reflect these areas of focus. Fellows perform as entry-level librarians half-time in a home department. The remaining time is devoted to an initiative of strategic importance in an area outside the home department.
The Libraries recognizes that self-determination is an important consideration. During the interview process, candidates learn more about the Libraries' departments and initiatives. Candidates are then given the opportunity to indicate their preferences for department and project assignments. The Libraries makes assignments that consider those preferences.
The Libraries seeks a diverse pool of applicants with ALA-accredited M.L.S. or M.I.S. degrees awarded up to 12 months before appointment (e.g., for July 1, 2018 start date, degree should be awarded between July 2017 – June 2018).
Required for consideration:
- demonstrated potential to develop expertise in science or engineering librarianship, in current and emerging digital technologies, or in management and administration of academic libraries
- evidence of leadership potential, including excellent interpersonal skills and ability to perform in a highly interactive team environment
- excellent written and oral communication skills
- demonstrated understanding of the educational mission of a research university and its role in valuing and nurturing demographic and intellectual diversity
- internship or practicum in a research-oriented environment is desirable
$64,000 plus benefits package. Professional development stipend, up to $2,500 annually.
Salary and Benefits
The Libraries offers a highly competitive salary in recognition of applicable education and experience for this position. Librarians have non-tenure track faculty status (without levels of rank). Benefits include: 24 days vacation, 12 days sick leave; State of NC preferred provider medical insurance, and state, TIAA/CREF, or other retirement options.
