Academic Technology Librarian

The NCSU Libraries invites applications and nominations for the position of Academic Technology Librarian. The Information Technology Department includes 22 staff across four units: Technology Services; Enterprise Operations; Academic Technology; and Discovery Systems and Applications. The department is critical to the Libraries’ success in charting a new path for research libraries, with an emphasis on developing and supporting information and academic technology solutions for the Libraries. Department staff guide the design and architecture of library applications and infrastructure, provide leadership in coordinating and defining technology requirements for library‐wide projects and initiatives, and ensure effective, sustainable operation of information systems and infrastructure. The department has played a leading role in the creation of high-tech learning spaces, delivery of rich media, and development of the James B. Hunt Jr. Library as a research platform.
The Academic Technology unit supports faculty and students in the use of advanced technologies for research, teaching, and learning. This includes support for the Libraries’ high tech spaces, investigation of new and emerging technologies, and in-depth support for relevant faculty projects. The Academic Technology Librarian will play an important role in facilitating outreach, project management, and support across the scope of technologies supported by the Academic Technology unit. This position reports to the Associate Head, Information Technology & Director of Academic Technology.
The Academic Technology Librarian:
- Facilitates library collaboration in the development and support of faculty and student projects that make use of the Libraries’ advanced technologies and spaces.
- Serves as a technical liaison working with research librarians and other campus liaisons to integrate these advanced technologies into research and teaching efforts on campus.
- Assesses use of current research and computing infrastructure; identifies opportunities to enhance technology infrastructure to facilitate usage.
- Explores campus need for new technologies and services; ensures that the Libraries’ research infrastructure matches research needs.
- Leads IT efforts to enhance our online presence, service portfolio, and technology training to improve access to advanced technology spaces and visualization infrastructure for Libraries’ staff, faculty, and students.
- Participates in library planning, serves on library-wide committees, task forces, and teams
- NCSU librarians are expected to be active professionally and to contribute to developments in the field.
- ALA-accredited MLS or MIS or other relevant advanced degree
- Experience in an academic research environment, preferably working directly with faculty and/or students
- Knowledge of technology trends in higher education
- Demonstrated experience managing complex projects; experience working as part of a technical team
- Excellent interpersonal skills; ability to communicate clearly, knowledgeably, and personably, orally and in writing
- Ability to work independently and in a team environment
- Demonstrated ability to learn and use new technologies
- Evidence of ability for ongoing professional development and contribution
- Relevant experience working in an academic library
- Experience using and/or supporting research computing technology, such as visualization spaces and high performance computing.
- Broad familiarity with IT systems and infrastructure, including knowledge of multiple operating systems, networking, and file management.
- Experience designing and/or implementing a service portfolio.
- Experience developing and executing technology training and workshops.
- Experience collaborating with academic faculty members on grant projects.
- Experience working with cross-disciplinary teams.
Salary and Benefits
The Libraries offers a highly competitive salary in recognition of applicable education and experience for this position. Librarians have non-tenure track faculty status (without levels of rank). Benefits include: 24 days vacation, 12 days sick leave; State of NC preferred provider medical insurance, and state, TIAA/CREF, or other retirement options.
