A GIS data set of Interstate routes, US routes, and select state routes in North Carolina, to be used as a general purpose roads layer, mainly for statewide plots and reference maps. These routes were digitized from NCDOT County Road maps. Route 40 east of Orange County was added in 1993.
This layer was developed to show the general road network in North Carolina, without having to depict detailed roads. This data was created to assist governmental agencies and others in making resource management decisions through use of a Geographic Information System (GIS).

This was done to comply >with the NC Geographic Information Coordinating Council's >"Statement of Direction for North Carolina Corporate Geographic >Database Horizontal Reference, Datum and Unit of Measure". >This reprojecting was done in various ways depending on the >data type and content. Vector data was projected using the >'project' command in ESRI's Arc software and topology was cleaned >and built based on coverage needs. Raster data was projected >using ESRI's Grid module and various steps as applicable. >1.) filename: prds93 (previously named nc.prds) >Route 40 southeast of Wake County was added in 1992, >and in Orange and Durham Counties in 1993.

Attributes were taken from the DOT County Road Atlas and checked using plots. Attributes have been added as needed to assist in map production. This layer was originally intended for internal use, but was made available due to the demand for a general NC road layer.
Using ESRI's ARC/INFO GIS software, the dataset was built for arc topology. Topology has not been edited since the last build or clean.
This data only shows Interstate routes, US routes, and select state routes from the DOT County Road Atlas.
Roads match their source manuscripts to within a pen width. This layer is not designed to be used for large scale plots, or plots that depend on precise road location.
County Road Atlas
The primary roads were selected and digitized from the DOT County Road Atlas. The arcs were attributed with road Ids to enable labeling on plots. This file is edited as needed based on addition of new primary roads, or needed changes in attributes to assist in plot making.

These attributes change as needed. This layer does not have a new release for every edit. Since its basic purpose is to depict primary roads for plots, small attribute edits are made as needed. >PRDS.AAT Arc Attribute Table >COLUMN ITEM NAME WIDTH OUTPUT TYPE N.DEC Definition >1 FNODE# 4 5 B - From node number >5 TNODE# 4 5 B - To node number >9 LPOLY# 4 5 B - Left poly number >13 RPOLY# 4 5 B - Right poly number >17 LENGTH 4 12 F 3 Length of arc in coverage units >21 PRDS# 4 5 B - Internal Id >25 PRDS-ID 4 5 B - User defined Id >29 ROAD-TYPE 4 5 B - Numeric road type code, based >on USGS DLG codes >33 CO# 4 5 B - County FIPS code >37 INTERSTATE-RT# 4 5 B - Interstate Route number >41 US-RT# 4 5 B - US Route number >45 STATE-RT# 4 5 B - State Route number >49 INT-STATUS 4 5 C - Internal status Id >53 LABELS 8 8 C - Road Ids which can be used >as labels for plots, EX.
