The North Carolina State University, Board of Trustees Meeting Minutes collection contains both general minutes and committee minutes. Included in this collection are minutes of the Board of Trustees of the university under its two earliest names: North Carolina College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts (1887-1917) and North Carolina State College of Agriculture and Engineering (1917-1932). Also included in this collection are minutes of the Consolidated University of North Carolina, a predecessor of the current University of North Carolina System, minutes of the Board since June 1972, following the creation of the UNC System, and minutes from several committees. Materials date from 1887-2018.

The North Carolina State University Board of Trustees consists of thirteen members. Duties of the Board of Trustees include the promotion of the sound development of North Carolina State University, including service to the state of North Carolina in a way that complements the activities of the institution and aiding the institution to perform at a high level of excellence in every area of endeavor.

Biographical/historical note

The North Carolina State University Board of Trustees consists of thirteen members. Eight are elected by the UNC Board of Governors; two are appointed by the General Assembly, one upon the recommendation of the President Pro Tempore of the Senate and one upon the recommendation of the Speaker of the House of Representatives; and the president of the student body serves an ex-officio member.It elects from within its membership a Chair, Vice Chair, Second Vice Chair, and a Secretary, who serve a term of one year. It consists of the following committes: Audit, Risk Management and Finance Committee; Buildings and Property Committee; University Advancement and External Affairs Committee; University Affairs Committee; and Executive Committee. It may also create committees as it deems appropriate. The newly elected chair is responsible for appointments to the standing committees and serves as an ex officio member of all standing committees.

Three regular meetings of the Board of Trustees occur each year. Any matter of business may be considered at a regular meeting of the Board. In addition, special meetings may be called by the Chair, or requested by not fewer than six members of the board. A quorum of the board consists of a majority of the members, and the Chair presides over all regular and special meetings. Minutes are taken by the Secretary or Assistant Secretary. These minutes are filed and indexed. The Assistant Secretary keeps the Board of Governors informed of the activities of the Board of Trustees, including changes to membership, committee structure, or bylaws. The Chancellor serves as the official medium of communication between the Board of Trustees and all individuals, officials, agencies and organizations, both within and without the institution.

Duties of the Board of Trustees include the promotion of the sound development of North Carolina State University, including service to the state of North Carolina in a way that complements the activities of the institution and aiding the institution to perform at a high level of excellence in every area of endeavor. It also serves as advisor to the Board of Governors on matters pertaining to North Carolina State University.

Included in this collection are minutes of the Board of Trustees of the university under its two earliest names: North Carolina College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts (1887-1917) and North Carolina State College of Agriculture and Engineering (1917-1932). The minutes cover a wide variety of topics including the consolidation of the University of North Carolina in 1931, the admittance of women as freshmen and sophmores at universities where previously they could only enroll as juniors or higher, federal funding and support for students preparing for the military during WWI and WWII, compliance with federal legislation on civil rights and other issues, discussion of the official name for NC State University, and the organization of the state board of education to administer growth of the consolidated university system. Other topics include land acquisitions as the university expanded, construction and organization of Centennial Campus, recruitment of minority students as connected to use of public and private sources of funding, student unrest during Vietnam, and ongoing revisions to the student code of conduct to reflect changing social norms and administrative strategies.
