Some correspondence pertains to articles and debates in the newspaper regarding architecture. Henry Leveke Kamphoefner was dean of the North Carolina State College (later North Carolina State University) School of Design, 1948-1973, and continued to teach architecture at North Carolina State University until 1979. Kamphoefner practiced architecture in Sioux City, Iowa, 1932-1936; was associate architect for the Rural Resettlement Administration in Washington, D.C., 1936-1937; and taught architecture at the University of Oklahoma, 1937-1948. The collection of letters and clippings may have originated from architect Brian Shawcroft, but was donated by George Smart and the North Carolina Modernist Houses.

The correspondence consists of “chapters” written by Stenhouse for Bishir’s information about the period covered, especially World War II. There are multiple revisions of previously written chapters included in the letters, as well as new material. The chapters involve topics on his advancement in the architectural profession, including information about his education, firms he worked for, starting his own firm, and architecture projects during and after WWII. Also included are pictures of architectural works and articles regarding Stenhouse’s professional projects and involvement in the American Institute of Architects and Historic Sites Commission of the Mecklenburg Historical Association. Stenhouse also comments on the importance of engineering in architecture and on the slow adoption of air conditioning by many architects. Catherine W. Bishir, a native of Lexington, Kentucky, earned a B.A. in English at the University of Kentucky in 1964 as well as a M.A. in English at Duke University in 1965. She held various positions in the Survey and Planning Branch of the North Carolina State Historic Preservation Office. She served as Senior Architectural Historian with Preservation North Carolina and later became the Curator of Architecture in Special Collections at North Carolina State University. She was a founding member of the Vernacular Architecture Forum. She has published many books and articles about North Carolina architecture and history.James A. Stenhouse was born in St. Louis and practiced architecture in Charlotte with J. N. Pease Associates.

Within this collection are letters from Le Corbusier to Keller Smith, sketches of the building in plan and section, ideation and study sketches of light, spacing and site location, and photographs of Le Corbusier's study model of l'Eglise de Firminy. Keller Smith was a co-editor of the Design School's student publication, and Le Corbusier's letter responds to Smith's request to view a project of his. Le Corbusier personally chose the church project to send to Smith. Charles-Édouard Jeanneret-Gris, better known as Le Corbusier, was born October 6, 1887 and died August 27, 1965 in Roquebrune-Cap-Martin, France. Le Corbusier was an architect, designer, urbanist, writer, and well-known in the field of modern architecture. He was born in La Chaux-de-Fonds, Switzerland, and became a French citizen in 1930. His career spanned five decades, with his buildings constructed throughout Europe, India, and America. He was a leader in studies of modern high design and was dedicated to providing better living conditions for the residents of crowded cities. Le Corbusier adopted his pseudonym in the 1920s, allegedly deriving it in part from the name of an ancestor, Lecorbésier. Keller Smith was the co-editor of student publications for the School of Design (now College of Design) at North Carolina State University.

Raimond Aldrich Struble was born in Forest Lake, Minnesota in 1924 and spent part of his childhood in Iowa. He received a B.S. in Aeronautical Engineering and an M.S. and Ph.D. in Mathematics, all from Notre Dame University. He worked for the Douglas Aircraft Company, the Illinois Institute of Technology, and finally N.C. State University starting in 1958 as a professor of mathematics. Struble retired from NC State in 1987 and passed away in 2013.

He was a member of the English faculty at North Carolina State College of Agriculture and Engineering (later North Carolina State University), 1925-1965, and developed courses in technical writing and public speaking for engineering students. Fountain received the Watauga Medal from North Carolina State University in 1985.

Hunt Papers, 1945, 1953-2018 include videotapes, films, compact discs, audiotapes, photographs, correspondence, speeches, news clippings, ad slicks, position papers, advertisement scripts, cue sheets, stickers, buttons, artifacts, and brochures relating to the personal life and political campaigns of James Baxter Hunt Jr., who was a Democratic lieutenant governor, 1973-1976, and four-term governor of North Carolina, 1977-1985 and 1993-2001. The largest portion of the collection is manuscripts, which feature debates, speeches, correspondences, advertisements and personal notes. The bulk of the materials include Hunt’s 1976 and 1980 gubernatorial campaigns, his unsuccessful 1984 bid to unseat Republican Jesse Helms as United State Senator from North Carolina, and his 1992 and 1996 gubernatorial campaigns. Also included are materials documenting Hunt’s acts post-governorship, including the establishment of the Smart Start program, the Institute for Emerging Issues, and The Hunt Institute. Not included are any materials specifically documenting Hunt’s official acts as governor. James Baxter Hunt, Jr. (1937- ) was the Democratic governor of North Carolina from 1977 to 1985 and 1993 to 2001. After serving as Lieutenant Governor from 1973 to 1977, he served two terms as Governor, from 1977 to 1981 and 1981 to 1985. In 1984 he waged an unsuccessful campaign to unseat Republican Jesse Helms as United States Senator from North Carolina. The closely contested race, which Helms eventually won with 52% of the vote, garnered national attention as both sides engaged in negative campaigning. The campaign ultimately cost a combined $22 million, making it the most expensive Senate race in American history to that point. Hunt returned to elected office in 1993, winning a third term as Governor by defeating Republican Lieutenant Governor James C. Gardner. In 1996, he was elected to a fourth term over Republican state Representative Robin Hayes. Hunt left the office of the governor in 2001.

The memory book is from Holladay's final year as a student at the University of Virginia. The speech given at the presentation of his portrait provides a genealogy dating to 1702. Some photographs of Shakespearean engravings are included. Other materials relate to Holladay's tenure as the first president of North Carolina College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts (later North Carolina State University) and include a "Book of Incidental Expenses" kept by Holladay during the first year, 1889-1890. The published books are items that had been in the Holladay family. Alexander Quarles Holladay (1839-1909) was a Civil War veteran, lawyer, educator, Virginia state senator, and college president. He was named the first president of North Carolina College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts (later North Carolina State University) upon its opening in 1889 and remained so for ten years until his retirement in 1899.

Robert Phillip Upchurch, 1928-2020, was born in Wake County, North Carolina, on February 9, 1928. He graduated from North Carolina State College of Agriculture and Engineering (later North Carolina State University) with a B.S. in Crop Science in 1948. He received a master's degree in 1949 and in 1953 was awarded a Ph.D. in plant physiology from the University of California, Davis. Upchurch was a member of the faculty at North Carolina State College from 1949 to 1965. From 1955 to 1957 Upchurch served in the United States Air Force with the rank of second lieutenant. From 1965 through 1975 he worked for the Monsanto Corporation in St. Louis, Missouri. From 1975 to 1990 Upchurch was a professor and head of the Plant Sciences Department at the University of Arizona.
