This collection includes documents and hosiery samples from the Kellwood Company of Siler City, North Carolina. Robert McKinley, who worked at the Kellwood Company for ten years, was in possession of the documents found in this collection. However, many documents, patents, agreements, and financial records originally belonged to Robert M. Matthews. The collection contains both business-related documents as well as documents, photos, slides, and samples pertaining specifically to the garments themselves. There are many articles within the collection. The bulk of the material comes from the 1980s about twenty years after the company was established. Robert McKinley began by working for Sears as a buyer in New York and Chicago. McKinley worked at Kellwood Company in Siler City, North Carolina for ten years. Robert M. Matthews worked for Robert McKinley. During his career at Kellwood Company, he was able to acquire two patents regarding hosiery and panty-hose creation and material during early 1970s.Kellwood Company was formed in 1961 due to the merger of Sears and other companies. Kellwood company still exists today and is acquired by a Hong Kong-based investor group. Less

This collection contains photographs taken by Dr. Robert N. Elliott, Jr. A professional photographer by training, Dr. Elliott took the majority of these photographs during his tenure as a history professor at North Carolina State University. The photographs span from 1965 through 1985 and the bulk of the photographs were taken in the 1970s. The photographs are primarily outdoor shots in North Carolina, but images from Virginia, Georgia, and South Carolina are included. Some themes of the photographic collection include the historic sections of Raleigh and Old Salem, North Carolina; South Carolina cemeteries; beaches and waterscapes; rural landscapes; outdoor winter landscapes; North Carolina State University and University of North Carolina campuses; plants and flowers; and trees. While the collection is primarily made up of photographs, it also contains some of Elliott's drawings of rural landscapes. Dr. Robert Neal Elliott, Jr., was born in Charlotte, North Carolina, in 1915. He was trained as a professional photographer by M. F. Dunbar. During World War II, he utilized his photography skills as a camera operator for the United States Army Air Force’s First Motion Picture Division, based in Hollywood, California. After the war, Elliott earned a bachelor’s degree from Appalachian State University and a doctorate degree from the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill, where he specialized in North Carolina history. He taught at Gardner-Webb University in Boiling Springs, North Carolina, from 1953 to 1956, then at North Carolina State University from 1956 until his retirement in 1981. He is the author of The Raleigh Register, 1799-1863. He maintained an active interest in photography throughout his life and on at least one occasion exhibited his photographs at North Carolina State University. Elliott died in 2003. Less

The papers of Robert O. Tilman document his career as assistant and associate professor at Yale University, professor of political science and dean of the College of Humanities and Social Sciences at North Carolina State University, and other professional activities related to Southeast Asian studies. A small part of the collection, mostly slides and photographs, deals with Tilman’s personal life. The collection includes correspondence; course material, such as syllabi and lecture notes; administrative files; files relating to various professional activities; manuscripts; publications; material from a research project about Filipino identity; reference files; personal files including those related to his wife Jo Tilman; audiovisual material such as video cassettes, tape reels, slides and photographs; artifacts; and computer-related material. Robert O. Tilman (1929-1987) was professor of political science, 1971-1987; dean of the College of Humanities and Social Sciences, 1971-1984; and founder of the North Carolina Japan Center at North Carolina State University. The Robert Phillip Upchurch Collection contains personal and professional papers of plant scientist Robert Phillip Upchurch. This collection contains annual reports, 1953-1965, written by Upchurch for a project at the North Carolina Agricultural Experiment Station, The Development of Principles and Practices for the Control of Weeds in Cotton, Peanuts, Soybeans, Forage Crops, Turf and for the Control of Nutsedge, Johnson Grass and Woody Plants, as well as class notes, 1941-1949, from Upchurch's years as a student in crop science and plant physiology. Robert P. Upchurch's personal military records, 1948-1967, are included in the collection, as are the Upchurch Bulletin, 1980-2006, and Englandia, 1996-1999, family history quarterlies edited and published by Robert Phillip Upchurch. Also included are publications and other materials of the Plant Growth Regulation Society of America, the Council for Agricultural Science and Technology (CAST), and the American Council on Science and Health (ACSH). Robert Phillip Upchurch, 1928-2020, was born in Wake County, North Carolina, on February 9, 1928. He graduated from North Carolina State College of Agriculture and Engineering (later North Carolina State University) with a B.S. in Crop Science in 1948. He received a master's degree in 1949 and in 1953 was awarded a Ph.D. in plant physiology from the University of California, Davis. Upchurch was a member of the faculty at North Carolina State College from 1949 to 1965. From 1955 to 1957 Upchurch served in the United States Air Force with the rank of second lieutenant. From 1965 through 1975 he worked for the Monsanto Corporation in St. Louis, Missouri. From 1975 to 1990 Upchurch was a professor and head of the Plant Sciences Department at the University of Arizona. Less

The Robert S. Curtis Papers contain manuscript and research materials with related correspondence for Curtis's eleven volume History of Livestock in North Carolina (1956). Robert Seth Curtis (1881-1962) graduated from Iowa State College in 1905 and worked on the Animal Industry staff at North Carolina State College (later North Carolina State University) from 1906 to 1928. He served as a livestock specialist with the State Department of Agriculture from 1942 until his retirement in 1951. Less

The Robert Sargent Papers, 1961-2002, include teaching materials, publications, research files, presentations, and data tapes documenting his work as a Professor at Syracuse University and on behalf of the United States Air Force. There are also materials, including conference programs, documenting Sargent’s involvement with the Winter Simulation Conference and other professional organizations and meetings. A list of books related to simulation donated to NC State University Libraries by Robert Sargent and individually cataloged may be found here. Robert G. Sargent studied simulation methodology and modeling at the University of Michigan. After completing his Ph.D. in 1966, he joined the faculty at Syracuse University, where he taught simulation until retiring in the late 1990s. Contained in this collection are Melvin's diploma (1913) and a certificate (1912) appointing him first lieutenant of the cadets. Also included is a handwritten note with biographical information about Melvin. It is undated but must be from a much later time period. Robert Tolar Melvin was from Bladen County. At 17 he taught in a one-room school. He was later a postal carrier. He attended North Carolina College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts (later North Carolina State University) and graduated in 1913 with the degree bachelor of science in agriculture. Less

News clippings, radio talks, articles, correspondence, field reports, and photographs relating to Robert Walter Graeber's thirty-two years spent in service of the North Carolina Agricultural Extension program. As head of the Forestry Extension, he influenced the founding of the North Carolina State College (later North Carolina State University) Forestry Department in 1929. Of major interest in this collection are Graeber's weekly field reports on several counties in North Carolina. These reports reflect Graeber's daily activities from 1926 to 1939. Other reports meticulously document plots of timber within several counties over the same period. Age, growth, volume, number, and price of standing trees represent the data gathered. R. W. (Robert Walter) Graeber was a pioneer of North Carolina’s forestry extension service and a leader of the North Carolina Forestry Association for several decades. A graduate of North Carolina College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts (which later became North Carolina State University), Graeber was appointed farm forestry specialist (or state extension forester) in 1925, specializing in the thinning and management of timberlands. He served in this role until his retirement in 1950. As the state extension forester he led hundreds of forestry demonstrations across North Carolina for farmers and sawmill operators. Graeber instructed them in the harvesting, timber scaling, planting and marketing of trees and lumber products. For those that Graber could not teach in person, he wrote extension circulars and numerous newspaper articles that were circulated nationwide. Graeber also was instrumental in establishing the Department of Forestry at North Carolina State College of Agriculture and Engineering (later North Carolina State University) in 1929. Less

This collection contains a diploma for the degree of Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering received by Robert Walter Kelly from North Carolina State College of Agriculure and Engineering on 3 June 1946. Robert Walter Kelly, originally from Merrick, New York, was a student at North Carolina State College of Agriculture and Engineering (later renamed North Carolina State University). While a student he was president of Pi Tau Sigma and Sigma Pi fraternities, among other activities. He earned a Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering in 1946. He later received a masters degree from Columbia University. He had a long career in engineering, eventually becoming a senior engineer for General Electric Advanced Reactor. Less

The Robert and Ruth Mace House Papers contains financial reports, newspaper articles, architectural notes and plans, and photographs relating to the construction of the Robert and Ruth Mace House located in Hillcrest Circle, Chapel Hill, North Carolina. The collection includes some architectural materials related to Lewis Clarke, the landscape architect of the Mace House, and Donald Stewart, the architect of the Mace House. The materials range from 1959 to 1985, with the bulk of the materials from 1959 to 1965. Robert and Ruth Mace moved to Chapel Hill, North Carolina, in 1954, where Robert Mace received a Ph.D. in physics from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Following this, the Mace Family decided to stay in the area. They constructed a home at 222 Hillcrest Circle, Chapel Hill, North Carolina, where they raised their two children, Mary and Tony Mace. The Robert and Ruth Mace House was completed in 1968. The house was later deeded to Robert and Ruth Mace's daughter, Mary Mace. It was rented out for several years, and torn down in 2017. Less

This collection contains handwritten research notes, animal rights research, research materials on Anna Kingsford, and articles and book reviews written by Roberta Kalechofsky. Also included are research papers on various subjects including biodmedicine, handwritten research notes on Anna Kingsford's "The Perfect in Diet" and "Dream And Dream Stories", correspondence, and photographs taken in England and France. The research notes cover a variety of subjects including Claude Bernard, science and religion, vivisection, and 19th century medical practice. Dr. Roberta Kalechofsky, 1931-2022, was born May 11, 1931, and was an American writer, feminist, speaker, essayist, and animal rights activist, focusing on the issue of animal rights within Judaism and the promotion of vegetarianism within the Jewish community. In 1975, Kalechofsky founded Micah Publications or MicahBooks, which specializes in the publication of animal-rights, Jewish vegetarian, and Holocaust literature, including The Jewish Vegetarian Year Cookbook and Judaism and Animal Rights: Classical and Contemporary Responses. In 1985, she founded Jews for Animal Rights. She was the author of Animal Suffering and the Holocaust: The Problem with Comparisons (2003), as well as seven works of fiction, poetry, two collections of essays, and a monograph on George Orwell. She was married to Dr. Robert Kalechofsky, a retired mathematics professor from Salem State University. Dr. Roberta Kalechofsky died on April 5, 2022. Less

The Rodney V. Smith industrial plant project materials consists of correspondence, interviews, and background materials for a student project on the layout of a gyrocopter industrial plant. Smith worked on this project with two other students, James Newhouse and Jerome Holmes. Smith, Newhouse, and Holmes conducted interviews with employees at Bensen Aircraft, and sent letters to more than 25 companies, including All American Engineering Company, the National Aeronautic Association, the Aerospace Industries Association of America, and Doman Helicopters, Inc. The background materials in the collection include the Directory of Hospital Heliports in the United States and issues of Aerospace News. Rodney V. The Roger H. Clark Papers, 1950-2013, contains correspondence; course material from North Carolina State University and University of Virginia; American Institute of Architects committee files; research notes and materials relating to Clark's books Kinetic Architecture, Precedents in Architecture and School of Design' published reports; project files, which include reduced plans, skecthes and photographs of architecture models; and architectural drawings of residences, office buildings, academic buildings, churches, banks and other buildings, mostly in central North Carolina. Roger H. Clark (1939- ) is a practicing architect and ACSA Distiguished Professor of Architecture at North Carolina State University. Clark received a B.S. in architecture in 1963 from the University of Cincinnati and a M.Arch. in 1964 from the University of Washington. Clark taught at the University of Virginia from 1964 to 1969, and at North Carolina State University beginning in 1969. His publications include Kinetic Architecture and Precedents in Architecture. Clark practiced architecture individually and with several firms in the Raleigh-Durham area including John D. Latimer and Associates, Inc., O'Brien/Atkins Associates, PA, and Cannon Architects. Clark has chaired the Committee on Design for the American Institute of Architects, both for the national organization and the North Carolina Chapter. He has also chaired the AIANC Awards Committee. Clark is a Fellow of the American Institute of Architects, and has received numerous professional awards and honors. Less

The Roger Lee Jackson Polyhedron Papers and Models (1968-2005) contain Roger Lee Jackson’s calculations and notes illustrating the steps of the math required to compute geodesic domes as well as several paper polyhedron models Jackson made based on the math. The collection also contains some books relating to polyhedra and geometry. Roger Lee Jackson (1931-2014) was a 1955 alumnus of North Carolina State School of Design where he studied and worked with Buckminster Fuller and Eduardo Catalano. To fulfill his ROTC commitment after graduating with a degree in architecture, Jackson worked with the architecture team on the design and construction of the Air Force Academy in Colorado. Jackson’s career also included work on hospitals, airports, shops, and university buildings in several different states including North Carolina, Utah, Minnesota,and California. Buckminster Fuller had a great impact on Jackson’s career and life. Jackson designed and constructed many polyhedron sculptures which were inspired by the work of Fuller. Less

The Roger Manley Collection of Gregg Museum Director Photographs contains photographs of the three Gregg Museum directors: Ben Williams, Charlotte Vestal Brown Wainwright, and Roger Manley. These photographs were taken by Christer Berg for his publication People with Purpose. Ben Williams was the first curator of the Gregg Museum of Art & Design. He was previously curator of the North Carolina Museum of Art and helped found the Friends of the College series at NC State University as well as the Gregg Museum. Charlotte Vestal Brown Wainwright was curator of art at North Carolina State University from 1982 to 1985, and became director of the Visual Arts Center at North Carolina State University in 1985. She was director of the Gregg for 27 years. Roger Manley was curator of the Gregg Museum from 2010 to 2023. Manley led the Gregg Museum through major changes, including the move from the Talley Student Center to the former Chancellor's Residence. Less

The Roger A. Powell Papers consist of materials documenting the tenure of Roger A. Powell as a member of the faculty of the Department of Zoology, College of Agriculture and Life Sciences at North Carolina State University. Included are personal and professional corespondence, publications, course material, photographs, and color films with sound, ranging from 1950 to 2007. Dr. Roger A. Powell's major research interests and contributions have been in animals' home ranges and spacing: how animals space themselves on a landscape, depending on the home ranges of other individuals and on the distributions of pertinent resources. Dr. Powell received his B.A. degree from Carleton College in Minnesota and his Ph.D. from the University of Chicago. He has taught courses in Wildlife Management, Mammalogy, Evolution, and Ecology of Mammals and Community Ecology. Dr. Powell has authored many books and co-authored numerous publications on the subjects of Behavioral Ecology of Mammals and Wildlife Management. Less

The Ron Scott Animal Rights Videotape Collection contains Scott's videotape footage of animal rights events and cruelty to animals. Scott shot a portion of the footage at several Culture and Animal Foundation festivals in Raleigh, N.C. Interview footage from animal rights cable television shows is also included. Ron Scott was a retired Air Force pilot who also served in the New York State Air National Guard. During the 1980s and 1990s, he videotaped hundreds of hours of footage at conferences, meetings, demonstrations, and protests related to various animal rights issues. He also traveled throughout the United States and Europe videotaping cruelty to animals and animal sanctuaries. Less

The Ron Sederoff Papers includes notes, proposals, correspondence, publications, reports, paper manuscripts, presentation materials, photographs, subject files, research notebooks, photographic slides, and wood samples related to extensive research, teaching, and professional activities. Included are materials that document Sederoff's role in the Forest Biotechnology Group and the Department of Forestry and Environmental Resources at North Carolina State University. Topics of the materials include DNA transfer in forest trees, lignin biosynthesis, tree genomes, agricultural applications of genetic research, and forest biotechnology. Materials range from 1953 to 2016. Ron (Ronald Ross) Sederoff is an emeritus faculty member for the College of Natural Resources at North Carolina State University in Raleigh, North Carolina. He previously served as Distinguished University Professor and Edwin F. Conger Professor of Forestry and Environmental Resources, Associate Member of the Department of Genetics and the Department of Molecular and Structural Biochemistry, as well as co-director of the Forest Biotechnology Group. His earlier research interests included mutational mechanisms, gene expression, and chromosome structure in bacteriophage T4 and Drosophila. His interest in large woody plants resulted from studies on the mitochondrial DNA of maize. His more recent research interests relate to studying the genomics of forest trees, genetic regulation of lignin biosynthesis, molecular mechanisms in the formation of the plant cell wall, and gene expression in differentiating wood.
