Also included is a copy of a 1965 newspaper article in which Baucom describes her early life, including her students days at NC State. The Cathy Sterling Papers include correspondence, texts of speeches, reports, clippings, photographs, and artifacts relating to Cathy Sterling's tenure, 1970-1971, as Student Body President at North Carolina State University. Many of the materials focus on Sterling's status as North Carolina State University's first female student body president, as well as her involvement in protest movements against the Vietnam War, which included organizing a campus Peace Retreat. The materials range in date from 1966 to 1999, with the bulk of the materials being from 1970 to 1972. Cathy (now known as Kate) Sterling served as the first female student body president at North Carolina State University, 1970-1971. She conducted a successful write-in campaign with a platform that focused on students’ rights and the administration’s use of student fees. In the Spring of 1970, Sterling married Gene Messick, a graduate of the School (now College) of Design at NC State and director of the multimedia program at Stewart Theatre. Soon after, Messick accepted a teaching position at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York, and Sterling moved to Ithaca to join him after the conclusion of her term as Student Body President. However, Sterling remained active in NC State’s Student Government activities throughout the 1971-1972 academic year. Sterling later returned to NC State, where she graduated in 1977 with a Bachelor of Science degree in vocational industrial education. Less

The Mary Yarbrough Papers (circa 1850-2005) contain 24.5 linear feet of correspondence, photographs, publications, music books, news clippings, photocopies, and artifacts. Most of these materials document Yarbrough's life and career, as well as her family history. Mary Elizabeth Yarbrough (1904-1984) was one of the first women to receive a graduate degree (M.S. in chemistry, 1927) from North Carolina State College (later North Carolina State University). Mary Yarbrough served on the faculty of Meredith College for many years (1929-1972). In 1941 she received a Ph.D. and Phi Beta Kappa key at Duke University. At Meredith College she headed the chemistry and physics department, and she became an assistant director of the cooperative education program. Less

This collection contains digital audio and video recordings of interviews conducted with former NC State students from the Class of 1962. Interviews were conducted by Jonathan Holloway and Samantha Rich, both from the staff of the NC State University Libraries. This is an artificial collection maintained by the NC State University Libraries' Special Collections Research Center. These oral histories were conducted on 30 March 2012 with some of the members of the NC State Class of 1962 who attended the Reunion Weekend. Interviews were conducted by NC State University Libraries staff. Clyda Weeks Lutz was first interviewed as a member of the Class of 1962 and then later re-interviewed for the Student Leadership Initiative, a project that chronicles the experiences and impact of former NC State student leaders. The records of the North Carolina State University Title IX Advisory Committee range in dates from 1972 to 1976. The records contain memoranda from acting Chancellor J. A. Rigney giving unit coordinators regulations and other material related to Title IX. The records also contain a list of student surveys regarding Title IX, a list of organizations and subcommittees, records of meetings of Title IX Compliance Officers and the final Title IX regulation implementing the Education Amendments of 1972. Title IX of the Educational Amendments of 1972 is the federal law that bans sex discrimination in schools, whether it is in academics or athletics. Title IX states, “No Person in the U.S. shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, or denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any program or activity receiving federal financial assistance." In November 1975, acting Chancellor J. A. Rigney of North Carolina State University appointed a committee to advise on implementation of Title IX at NC State. Less

This collection contains the records of the North Carolina State University Women's Center. The records include flyers, pamphlets, announcements, memoranda, news clippings, scrapbooks, slides, CD-ROMs, floppy disks, and artifacts that document the activities of the center and its programs from 1965 to 2019. Topics include the signature programs of the Women's Center such as the Chocolate Festivals, productions of The Vagina Monologues, Take Back the Night marches and rallies, Alternative Service Breaks, and the Sisterhood Dinners Some documents pre-date the founding of the Center in 1991. These include materials on meetings, councils, and polls that led up to the creation of the Center. The North Carolina State University Women's Center was founded in 1991 in order to provide services to the women students, faculty and staff on campus. The Center's mission is to celebrate women through support, empowerment, education, and leadership development and to challenge and motivate both women and men to achieve inclusivity and gender equity. It achieves this by offering signature annual programs such as the Chocolate Festival, the production of the Vagina Monologues, Take Back the Night march and rally, Alternative Service Break, and the Sisterhood Dinner. Other services include maintaining a sexual assault helpline and a system of advocates available to those in need.In 1989, then Assistant Director of Student Development Evelyn Reiman and others formed the Women's Resource Coalition. The Coalition published a newsletter and sponsored events. In 1991, Heloise Jones (president of the Women's Resource Coalition) lobbied Provost Franklin Hart to establish a Women's Center. In October of that year, the Women's Center opened its doors in the basement of Nelson Hall. It is now in Talley Student Center.The NC State Women’s Center is one of four Campus Community Centers (along with the GLBT Center, Multicultural Student Affairs, and the African American Cultural Center) housed under the Office of Institutional Equity and Diversity (OIED).
