General correspondence, annual reports, and administrative, financial, and regulatory information regarding athletics practices of the ACC and the NCAA are included in this collection. The Athletic Council was established at North Carolina State College (later, University) in or before 1923 to oversee all athletic activities at the college, including activities in the college's Physical Education Department as well as intercollegiate activities with other colleges. The Athletic Council held administrative control over all athletic activities at NC State until the first Athletics Director was hired in 1948. Since then, the Athletic Council has worked in consultation with the Athletics Director to oversee athletic activities at NC State. The Council on Athletics continues to maintain responsibility for representing NC State at meetings of both the Atlantic Coast Conference (of which NC State has been a member since the conference's founding in 1953) and the NCAA. The University Archives Reference Collection, Biographical Files contain clippings, University publications, copies of photographs, and other materials documenting faculty, staff, and alumni of North Carolina State University. This is an artificial collection, and is updated and maintained by Special Collections staff. North Carolina State University was established in 1887 as the North Carolina College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts (A&M College). The College opened in 1889 with one building - the current Holladay Hall - six faculty, and courses in the agricultural and mechanical arts, adding a curriculum in applied science in 1893. By the turn of the century the College had grown to some half dozen buildings, about 300 students, and had begun to diversify its curricula. In 1917, the institution's name was changed to North Carolina State College of Agriculture and Engineering (State College). In 1931 the College greatly reworked its curricula as it underwent consolidation. Along with North Carolina College for Women and the University of North Carolina, it became a part of the Consolidated University of North Carolina,. North Carolina State is now one of the constituent institutions of the multi-campus University of North Carolina system, having received university status, and, after some controversy, assumed its current name in 1965. As of 2007, N.C. State had a student body of nearly 30,000, nearly two thousand faculty, and research and program expenditures of over $440 million. Less

The Student Media Authority at North Carolina State University oversees creation of campus student publications at North Carolina State University, which include a yearbook, a daily newspaper, literary magazine, and African American student newspaper. It also oversees the student radio station, WKNC, and student television station, Wolf TV. The Publications Board was formed at North Carolina State College in or before 1933 to oversee creation of student publications. By 1937, it included representatives from student publications such as the Agromeck, Technician, Wataugan, Southern Engineer, and Agriculturist. By the late 1940s, it also included representatives from the student radio station WVWP. Since their beginning in 1974, the NC State women's basketball team has been to the Sweet 16 fourteen times and to the Final Four once, in 1998. Kay Yow coached the team for 34 years. The Alan Sykes Collection of NC State Athletics Publications and Memorabilia (1930-2013) contains publications from the NCSU Basketball and Football teams, NCSU memorabilia, newspapers, Agromecks, alumni magazines, and scrapbooks. The memorabilia consists of foam fingers, cups and bottles, flags, stickers, photos, and more. These materials were collected by Alan Sykes, an NC State Wolfpack fan. Athletics began officially at the North Carolina College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts on March 12, 1892 when a football team made up of students at the college defeated the Raleigh Male Academy, a local high school, by the score 12-6. That fall, the faculty and trustees of the college first became involved with intercollegiate athletics. Since 1947 athletic teams at North Carolina State have been known as the Wolfpack. The materials date from 1896 to 2007. As of 2013, the Office of Public Affairs consisted of three divisions: Communications Services, News Services, and Web Communications. The News Services division uses a wide variety of methods to promote NC State University on local, national, and international levels. Also included in this collection are a number of broadcast recordings centering around the NCAA championship titles of 1974 and 1983; as well as miscellaneous footage of individual players and coaches at NC State. There are some coaches' shows as well. Materials range in date from the 1939 to 2014, with a number of films undated. As of 2023, the North Carolina State Wolfpack basketball team has won almost 20 conference tournaments, competed in the NCAA Tournament almost 30 times, gone to the Final Four three times, and won a national championship twice. Everett Case coached the Pack from 1946 to 1965 and was instrumental in forming the Atlantic Coast Conference. They won the 1974 championship under the leadership of Coach Norm Sloan. The "Cardiac Pack" as they were called achieved one of the great upsets in sports history under Coach Jim Valvano in 1983 to win the National Championship. Less

The Department of Communication Services provided communication leadership and innovation for the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences to further the mission of North Carolina State University. The department delivered timely, accurate, research-based information to improve the quality of life for citizens of North Carolina, facilitated the effective transfer of information between clients and their audiences, trained and advised clients in effective communications, and provided communications services.By 2013, Communication Services was no longer a department under the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences. This collection contains an oral history with Nora Lynn Finch conducted by Gwynn Thayer and Taylor Wolford in July 2022. Included is a full transcription of the interview. In the interview, Finch discusses: playing sports from a young age (particularly with her brother); coaching at Wake Forest University and Peace College; meeting Kay Yow and being hired at NC State; her relationship with Athletics Director Willis Casey; the implementation of Title IX and discrimination against women athletes; her role models; and trans athletes. Nora Lynn Finch attended Western Carolina where she played field hockey, volleyball, basketball, and tennis. She received a BS in Education in 1970 and Masters of Education in 1971. After doing some officiating, Finch coached women's basketball and other women's sports at Wake Forest University then at Peace College (where she also served as Director of Athletics). After acting as Coordinator of Women's Athletics for two years, Finch became Assistant Director of Athletics, the first woman in N.C. to hold the title. When Jim Valvano promoted her to Associate Director of Athletics, she became the first woman athletics director in the ACC to hold that title and the first at an ACC school to be the primary administrator for men's sports (soccer, track and field, and swimming). She would serve as the Senior Women's Administrator at NC State for over 30 years. Less
