Records of the North Carolina State University Faculty Committee on Student Government range from 1927 to 1958, although records from the 1920s are limited to a Tau Beta Pi council bulletin and a booklet on codes of conduct at North Carolina State College (later North Carolina State University). The bulk of the collection is from the mid 1940s-1950s. Included are some documents sent from the student council to the faculty, student council booklets delineating the rules of student conduct and the punishments for failing to follow said rules. Also included is information on the adoption of the honor system at North Carolina State College and inquiries from other universities interested in the newly adopted policy. William Norwood Hicks, the first head of the NC State College Department of Philosophy and Religion and a student leader during his time at State College figures prominently in this collection. A second box includes portfolios containing information on the evolution and development of the campus government and honor system, as well as drafts of the constitution and by-laws proposed by the organization. Student government began at North Carolina State College in 1921 on October 15th. The student government worked in tandem with elected faculty members as part of the campus government. Later, it seems that a separate student government, including a student body president and governing committees was formed. The Faculty Committee on Student Government appears to be a means of including faculty involvement and input in the governance of the student body by its peers. Many of the records regard the establishment and use of the honor system in relation to student government, a then-innovative plan that seems to have been emulated by other universities. Rules regarding academic honesty and proper student behavior were primary concerns of the student government and had particular relevance for educators at the University. Included in the records are booklets outlining the rules, both proposed and in place, governing the student body, as well as notes on various documents made by faculty members, and documents relating to the student council. The records of the Social Functions Committee of North Carolina State University (earlier North Carolina State College) span from 1925 to 1971. There is an additional folder of undated material in the collection. The collection primarily contains the minutes of the Social Functions Committee, as well as forms and information regarding chaperones, rental of locations and supplies, policies regarding social functions associated with the University, and correspondence related to said functions. Information relating to the Interfraternity Council and various fraternal and social organizations on campus can be found in this collection. A significant focus lies in expectations for student conduct and alcohol use at campus-related events. Though the included information spans from 1925 to 1971, there are few documents pertaining to the years 1925 to 1947. A Social Functions committee apparently existed at North Carolina State College (later North Carolina State University) in 1924-1925. The purpose of the Social Functions Committee was to establish codes of conduct for and organize social functions affiliated with the University and hosted by various student organizations. The records of the University Dining Committee at North Carolina State University contain memoranda, correspondence, meeting minutes, suggestions on improving food service operations, clippings, newsletters, reports, a survey on the food service program, and other records related to the functioning of the committee. Materials range in date from 1956 to 1986. The Cafeteria Advisory Committee was established in or before 1956 at North Carolina State College to monitor the food service operations at the college, assess comments and feedback from students, and provide recommendations for improvements to the college's food service operation. In 1971, the Cafeteria Advisory Committee was renamed the Food Services Committee, and tasked by the chancellor to conduct an investigation into revising the entire food service operation for what had become North Carolina State University. Sometime after this, the committee's name was again changed to the University Dining Committee. This committee remains active as of 2011, continuing to act in an advisory capacity for the University Dining office. Less

There is also a large amount of photographic materials, including CDs, DVDs, photographic prints, negatives, contact sheets, and slides, most of which are from student photographers. The collection includes records of the Student Media Board, 1928-2008, the Agromeck office from 1909 to 2011, the Technician office from 1939 to 2011, the WKNC Radio Station from 1922 to 2006, the Windhover from 1928 to 2013, the Nubian Message from 2007 to 2009, and a small number of records, 1926-2022, from other publications. The Student Media Authority at North Carolina State University oversees creation of campus student publications at North Carolina State University, which include a yearbook, a daily newspaper, literary magazine, and African American student newspaper. It also oversees the student radio station, WKNC, and student television station, Wolf TV. The Publications Board was formed at North Carolina State College in or before 1933 to oversee creation of student publications. By 1937, it included representatives from student publications such as the Agromeck, Technician, Wataugan, Southern Engineer, and Agriculturist. By the late 1940s, it also included representatives from the student radio station WVWP. In the following decades, the organization continued to oversee the finances and leadership of student publications at North Carolina State University. It underwent various name changes, becoming known as the Student Media Board by the mid-2000s. The records of the North Carolina State University chapter of Abraxas, Inc. inclue meeting minutes, personnel and financial information, other administrative records, and topical files of pamphlets on issues including drug and alchohol use, pregnancy, suicide and depression, study habits, and general sexual matters. Volunteer peer counselors provided information and advice on these and other topics to students on campus. The North Carolina State University chapter of Abraxas, Inc. was founded in 1972 to provide peer counseling, free of charge, to students on campus. Counseling was done both in person and over the phone, and Abraxas also worked to distribute factual literature on these same topics around campus. The chapter remained active until at least 1975. The records of the Zeta Beta Chapter of Alpha Delta Pi include a 1958 Pledge Director’s Manual from the national organization in addition to national and chapter materials from 1970s through the early 1980s. The national Alpha Delta Pi Sorority was established in 1851 as the Adelphean Society at Wesleyan College. It was the first secret society for college women. In 1905, the Adelphean Society's name was changed to Alpha Delta Pi. Chapters were installed at a number of colleges in the following decades, although the mother chapter was closed in 1916. The Zeta Beta Chapter at North Carolina State University was colonized in 1969 and installed in 1971, after an apparent false start in the late 1950s. The Zeta Beta Chapter remained active as of 2008. Less

The records of the Iota Lambda (North Carolina State University) Chapter of the Alpha Phi Omega National Service Fraternity (APO) contain the charter to establish the Iota Lambda Chapter, chapter meeting minutes, publications, the constitution and by-laws, membership rosters, scrapbooks, photo composites of members, and other general information on the chapter. Members of the chapter volunteer to provide service and promote tolerance in the community. The Iota Lambda Chapter was established in November of 1950. Alpha Phi Omega is a national service co-ed fraternity whose mission is to create campus and community leaders through service. The records of the Gamma Upsilon Zeta Chapter (North Carolina State University's chapter) of the Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity include their chartes and bylaws, financial records, reports to the national office of Lambda Chi Alpha, the chapter's history, and information on the Gamma Upsilon Zeta housemother and her book on the history of the chapter. Lambda Chi Alpha is a social fraternity that was founded in 1909 at Boston University. North Carolina State's chapter (the Gamma Upsilon Zeta Chapter) was installed in 1924, having been initially formed in 1920 as the Pi Alpha fraternity and then later petitioning to join Lambda Chi Alpha. The Gamma Upsilon Zeta Chapter became the 65th chapter of the fraternity at its installation, and remained active until 1998, when financial problems led to the closure of the chapter. Less

The National Society of Scabbard and Blade was founded during the school year of 1904-1905 at the University of Wisconsin to foster the ideals and practice of military education in colleges and universities.
