The Henry Leveke Kamphoefner Papers dates from 1924 to 1990 and include correspondence, magazine articles, news clippings, speeches, photographs, architectural drawings, and artifacts. It also includes information about Kamphoefner's personal life. Henry Leveke Kamphoefner was dean of the North Carolina State College (later North Carolina State University) School of Design, 1948-1973, and continued to teach architecture at North Carolina State Universtiy until 1979. The Geoffrey Duart McLean Landscape Architecture Photographs and Drawings includes digital files that are scans of original drawings, photographic prints, and slides. The scans were done in 2012; the original photographs date from 1963-circa 1990. These images show McLean's projects on the North Carolina State University campus and Raleigh's Eastgate Park. McLean's work for landscape architect Lewis Clarke and architect A. G. Odell is also included. Additional unprocessed materials (drawings, slides, etc.) have also been added that document McLean's landscape architecture projects. Geoffrey McLean graduated from the North Carolina State University School of Design in 1969 with a degree in landscape architecture. He studied under noted landscape architect Lewis Clarke. His firm, Geoffrey McLean & Company, commenced business in 1971. In addition to being a licensed landscape architect, McLean is also a professional engineer. He has been a member of the Wake County Planning Board and Board of Supervisors for the Wake County Soil and Water Conservation District. The Raymond Leroy Murray Papers, 1911-2011, contain various papers and files from Raymond Murray's research, teaching, consulting, and other activities. Included are conference papers, class lecture notes, talking points, reports, publication drafts, schedules, research and reference files, and article reprints. The collection contains materials on the following topics: low level radioactive waste management, buckling, radon, criticality, reactor analysis, kinetics, and migration. In various series are papers that Dr. Murray prepared in conjuction with North Carolina State University, various government agencies, and contract work he did with such companies as Bechtel. Raymond Leroy Murray was born on February 14, 1920, in Lincoln, Nebraska, and died on June 22, 2011, in Raleigh, North Carolina. He received a B.S. in education, 1940, and M.S. in physics and mathematics, 1941, from the University of Nebraska, and a Ph.D in physics from the University of Tennessee, 1950. That same year he joined the new nuclear engineering program at North Carolina State College (later University) as a physics professor. He was a key figure in establishing and operating the University's nuclear reactor, which was the first operated on a college campus. From 1963 to 1974 he headed NC State University's Department of Nuclear Engineering. He had many research interests and edited six editions of textbooks about nuclear energy. He worked as a consultant for companies interested in the history of nuclear energy, disasters of nuclear power plants, the development of the atomic bomb and how to safely deal with radioactive waste. The Frances M. Richardson Papers document Professor Frances Marian (Billie) Richardson’s career at North Carolina State University as a research professor, scientific investigator, administrator, and instructor in the School (now College) of Engineering. Dating from 1928 to 2000, with the bulk of material from 1951 to 1993, the collection includes reports, proposals, publications, conference handouts, research notebooks, notes, correspondence, newspaper clippings, photographs, and one 16 mm film. The collection also documents Richardson’s involvement in a variety of professional societies, such as the Society of Women Engineers and Sigma Xi, the Scientific Research Society, and her professional development outside of the university. Much of her research and teaching focused on topics in chemical and biomedical engineering, and the collection contains research, advising, and course materials related to these areas of study. Frances Marian (Billie) Richardson (1922-2018) was the first woman faculty member of the School (now College) of Engineering at North Carolina State University. From 1951 to 1980, she was a research associate professor in the Department of Engineering Research, and held various teaching positions at NC State University until her retirement in 1992. Her research and publications focused on the areas of fluid mechanics and infrared imaging thermography, as well as respiratory physiology and tracing the flow of non-Newtonian fluids using radioactive tracer displacement techniques. Richardson received a B. S. in chemistry from Roanoke College in 1943 and an M. S. in chemistry from the University of Cincinnati in 1947. Less

The bulk of the collection is composed of architectural records, such as drawings and sketches, that signify Matsumoto's architectural influences and his approach to project development over time. Included are materials that cover the various types of projects he took on, such as residential, collegiate, commercial, and community centers. The architectural records cover a wide expanse of projects primarily in North Carolina and California, with others in Virginia, Missouri, New York, Florida, Kentucky, Arkansas, and Illinois. The architectural records, publications, honors and awards, and architectural model contained in the collection portray Matsumoto's career as an architect, businessman, and leader of modernist architecture in the 20th century. The materials range from 1930 to 2009, with the bulk from 1940 to 1979. A project index to the collection is available online. George Matsumoto (1922-2016) was a Japanese American architect and educator who is most known for his award-winning, modernist designs. In 1948, Matsumoto became a faculty member at the School (later College) of Design of North Carolina State College of Agriculture and Engineering (later North Carolina State University). During his tenure at the School of Design, Matsumoto won more than thirty awards for his residential work, and his achievements in design were widely published. In 1961, George Matsumoto went on to join the faculty at the College of Environmental Design at the University of California, Berkeley, and opened his own firm. He stopped teaching in 1967 but continued his architecture work until 1991. In contrast to his residential work, Matsumoto's post-teaching work is mostly comprised of community centers and collegiate designs. Less

Frederick Morgan Haig served on the faculty of North Carolina State University for 42 years as a professor of dairy husbandry. Haig was a native of Washington, D.C. He was a graduate of the University of Maryland, and served in World War I as an infantry lieutenant before joining the N.C. State faculty in 1919. Haig received an M.S. in animal husbandry from N.C. The Robert Sargent Papers, 1961-2002, include teaching materials, publications, research files, presentations, and data tapes documenting his work as a Professor at Syracuse University and on behalf of the United States Air Force. There are also materials, including conference programs, documenting Sargent’s involvement with the Winter Simulation Conference and other professional organizations and meetings. After completing his Ph.D. in 1966, he joined the faculty at Syracuse University, where he taught simulation until retiring in the late 1990s. The Charles Kahn Papers contains design proposals and drawings, course materials, journal articles, pamphlets, brochures, oral histories, and photographic negatives documenting work of Charles Kahn and his students as well as local architects, including Horacio Caminos, Matthew Nowicki, James Fitzgibbons, Eduardo Catalano, and George Matsumoto. Materials related to Buckminster Fuller and Charter Industries (Geodesic domes) are also included. Items in the collection are described using titles found on Kahn's original files. Charles Howard Kahn was born in Salisbury, North Carolina. In 1952, he joined the faculty at North Carolina State University as an instructor in Civil Engineering. He was appointed Associate Professor of Design in 1959. Kahn remained at North Carolina State University until 1968, when he left for the University of Kansas. Kahn's research focused on thin-shell structures and membranes of long-span roofs for buildings. Notably, he designed North Carolina State University's Carter-Finley Stadium. Roger H. Clark (1939- ) is a practicing architect and ACSA Distiguished Professor of Architecture at North Carolina State University. Clark received a B.S. in architecture in 1963 from the University of Cincinnati and a M.Arch. in 1964 from the University of Washington. Clark taught at the University of Virginia from 1964 to 1969, and at North Carolina State University beginning in 1969. His publications include Kinetic Architecture and Precedents in Architecture. Clark practiced architecture individually and with several firms in the Raleigh-Durham area including John D. Latimer and Associates, Inc., O'Brien/Atkins Associates, PA, and Cannon Architects. Clark has chaired the Committee on Design for the American Institute of Architects, both for the national organization and the North Carolina Chapter. He has also chaired the AIANC Awards Committee. The David C. Fischetti Papers, 1962-2011, document the professional career of David Fischetti and the work of his professional engineering firm, DCF Engineering, Inc. This collection is arranged in three series: drawings, project files, and professional files. The collection consists primarily of architectural drawings and paperwork associated with client projects and Fischetti’s professional development. The projects include covered bridges, historic structures, parks, university campuses, churches, civic facilities, and a few residences. Also included are book and presentation drafts, conference ephemera, photographs, and testimony given by Fischetti in several lawsuits. Geographically, the project files represent projects located primarily, though not exclusively, throughout the eastern seaboard. David Carmichael Fischetti (1946-2011) was born in Brooklyn, New York. He earned a BS in Civil Engineering from Clemson University in 1969. In 1975, Fischetti opened his own firm, DCF Engineering, Inc., in Cary, North Carolina, which he operated until his death. He was registered as a Professional Engineer in nineteen states. Fischetti’s engineering projects often focused on historic structures, including covered bridges, churches, and historic properties. His best known project in North Carolina was the twenty-year-long effort to relocate the historic Cape Hatteras Lighthouse, for which he was the engineer of record. For his preservation work, Fischetti was lauded with scores of awards from various state preservation societies and national professional associations.Fischetti was an active member of state- and national- level professional engineering and historic preservation associations. He gave numerous conference presentations, published scholarly papers, and taught several courses. He was a Professional Fellow of the Historic Resources Imaging Laboratory, School of Architecture at Texas A&M University and received the Orthogonal Medal from the faculty of Graphic Communications at North Carolina State University in 2000. In 2009, Fischetti published a textbook, “Structural Investigation of Historic Buildings.” Fischetti died in March of 2011. Less

Hartmann's original plans and revisions for design of the Atlantic Bank and Trust Building in Burlington, North Carolina, in 1928 as well as plans for the 1950 renovation of the building. Architect Charles Conrad Hartmann was born in 1889 in New York City but moved to Greensboro, North Carolina, to open an office in 1921. Hartmann played an important role in the spread of high-rise downtown bank and office buildings in many North Carolina towns, as well as the design of many hospitals, housing projects, commercial and religious buildings, and single-family homes through the 1960s. Meredith Davis has been a professor of graphic design at North Carolina State University since 1989. She served for ten years as the chair of the Department of Graphic Design (now the Department of Graphic Design and Industrial Design) and four years as head of the interdisciplinary Ph.D. in Design program. Her research explores the ways in which design can be used in educational reform efforts in K-12 schools, and the relationship between design and cognition. Project files include specification manuals, reports, studies, and other material. Reference materials include design competition manuals, design guidelines, specification standards, and other publications in architectural design. William Waldo Dodge, Jr. (1895-1971) was an American architect and World War I veteran. He settled in Asheville, North Carolina, in 1923 and practiced architecture, designing residences and French style shops for several decades. In 1940, he founded the firm Six Associates with several partner architects and engineers. He resumed his private practice a few years later. Dodge, Jr., retired from practice in 1958. The Richard C. Bell Drawings and Other Materials, 1924-2017, document the professional activities of landscape architect Richard C. Bell. The collection consists of landscape plans and planting details, prospective elevations, technical drawings, and web content, as well as associated architecture plans created by partnering architectural firms. A small number of project files, which document both residential and public spaces, are also found in the collection. Bell’s projects include private residences, subdivision developments, municipal and civic structures, various businesses, and some two dozen college and universities. Richard C. (Richard Chevalier) Bell (1928- ), a native of Manteo, N.C., received a degree in landscape architecture from North Carolina State University's College of Design (then, the North Carolina State College School of Design) in 1950. Afterwards, he apprenticed under Simonds & Simonds of Pittsburgh, Pa., and Frederick B. Stresau of Fort Lauderdale, Fla. At the age of 21, he became the youngest designer to receive the Prix de Rome, allowing him to study in Europe for two years. He became a Fellow of the American Academy in Rome. In 1954, Bell became a member of the American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA) and he was elected to Fellowship in the organization in 1980. In 1955, Bell founded his first firm in Raleigh, N.C., and for many years operated the business from its award-winning office space, Water Garden Office Park. His son-in-law Dennis Glazener worked for the firm, and eventually became a partner. Bell retired in 2007. Less
