The Azalea Society of America records contain administrative information, chapter information, correspondence to and from the Society, membership information, various publications, and research files. Although items in the collection date back to 1928, the bulk of information falls between 1979 and 2013. This is an ongoing collection with publications added once available. Created in 1979, the Azalea Society of America's goals include the promotion of the knowledge of and interest in azaleas and proper description and registration of azaleas. The Charlotte Biotechnology Conference and Five Ventures Business Innovation Competition Records primarily document two events sponsored by the Charlotte Research Institute: the Charlotte Biotechnology Conference and the Five Ventures Business Innovation Competition. The collection is divided into two series, one for each event. The records include programs, sponsorship packages, speaker invitations, talking points, agendas, press releases, surveys, speaker biographies, logos, photographs, presentations, executive summaries, applications, and judging packets. This collection consists of both physical and digital materials. The materials are dated from 2005 to 2010. UNC Charlotte established the Charlotte Institute for Technology Innovation (now the Charlotte Research Institute) in 2000. The insitute's mission is to foster research partnerships between the university and businesses, including in the areas of bioinformatics, nanotechnology, and biotechnology. To that end, the Institute established and co-sponsored the Charlotte Biotechnology Conference and the Five Ventures Business Innovation Competition, which have been held annually beginning in 2002. The Biotechnology Conference brings together biotechnology, business, and research professionals to highlight regional biotechnology initiatives and investment trends in the Charlotte area. The Ellis B. Cowling Papers contain files from 1957 to 2013 that include reports, notes, writings, research data, memos, correspondence, and newspaper clippings documenting Ellis B. Cowling's career. There are correspondence, publications, media clippings from newspapers, websites and magazines, drafts and reports from the Ad Hoc Committee at North Carolina State University and photographs all related to the move of Cape Hatteras Lighthouse in 1999. There are also articles, correspondence, grant application materials, presentation materials, newsletters, newspaper clippings, and reports related to Cowling's animal waste research work, pertaining in particular to the Out-of-the-Box Thinking group. Additionally there are articles, background information, brochures, correspondence and news articles related to Cowling's involvement with the installation of Marye Anne Fox as Chancellor of North Carolina State University, the Watauga Seminar and the Faculty Senate. The largest series on the Southern Oxidants Study (SOS) contains annual meetings agendas, correspondence, presentation materials and reports related both directly to SOS and to its collaboration with other organizations. There is also extensive material about the Data Analysis Workshop conducted by SOS. In addition to these paper materials, there are also floppy disks, slides and photographs related to the Southern Oxidants Study (SOS). Finally, there are also audiovisual materials, primarily videotapes and cassette tapes. Most of the cassette tapes contain lectures Cowling gave over the course of a semester to the graduate-level PP [Plant Pathology] 650 course, although it is unclear what the course would have been titled since it no longer exists. Dr. Ellis B. Cowling is a University Distinguished Professor At-Large Emeritus of Forestry and Plant Pathology at North Carolina State University. Dr. Cowling specializes in biochemistry of wood decay, conservation of essential elements by forest trees, diseases of forest trees and deterioration of timber products, role of nitrogen in coevolution of forest trees and wood-destroying fungi, and integrated management of plant diseases. His other research interests include man-induced changes in the chemical climate and their effects on terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems, and the role of scientists in public decision making. Dr. Cowling helped develop a nationwide system for monitoring acid deposition called the National Atmospheric Deposition Program (NADP). His appointment as the Chairman of the Ad Hoc Committee of Faculty at North Carolina State University contributed to the preservation and relocation of the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse in North Carolina. This collection documents the tenure of Dr. Major M. Goodman as a faculty member in the departments of Crop Science, Statistics, Genetics, and Botany at North Carolina State University. It contains a large amount of correspondence with scholars in the crop science and maize research fields, published journal articles and reviews, manuscripts and research reports, conference programs, data sets, research plans and notes, experiment books, coursework, and documents related to the various national committees and advisory boards that Goodman served on. Also included are a small amount of photographic materials and reel-to-reel tapes. Major M. Goodman was born September 13, 1938 and began working with maize as a detasseler at Pioneer Hi-Bred International in his hometown of Johnston, Iowa. In 1960 he earned his Bachelor's Degree in Math with a Minor in Chemistry from Iowa State University. He continued his education at North Carolina State University, where he received his Master's Degree in Genetics in 1963 and his Ph.D. in Genetics and Statistics in 1965.After two years as a postdoctoral fellow in Brazil, Dr. Goodman returned to N.C. State as a Visiting Assistant Professor in 1967. He was awarded full Professorship in 1976. Since 1988 Dr. Goodman has been the William Neal Reynolds and Distinguished University Professor of Crop Science, Statistics, Genetics, and Botany at N.C. State University. He is considered to be one of the leading experts on maize genetics and has made numerous important contributions to the field, especially on the subjects of plant breeding and genetic diversity. As of 2012, he continues to serve as the head of the Maize Breeding and Genetics Program in the Department of Crop Science at N.C. State. Less

The North Carolina Research Campus Papers, 2006-2010, contain master plans, architectural drawings, DVDs, CDs, published research, newspaper articles, magazines, archived web content, and flash drives related to the founding, construction, and activities of the North Carolina Research Campus. The materials are primarily concerned with the built environment of the campus as well as the events and research that occur there. The collection spans the full breadth of operations at the NCRC, and as such contain items related to many of the universities and corporations that maintain facilities on the campus. The materials range in date from 2006 to 2020. In December 2004, David Murdock purchased the former Cannon Mills Plant One at auction and in 2005, in partnership with the University of North Carolina system, announced plans for the North Carolina Research Campus (NCRC), a 1.5 billion dollar scientific and economic revitalization project. This private-public venture serves to foster collaboration and further knowledge in biotechnology, nutrition, agriculture, and health. Since its groundbreaking in 2006, the NCRC has expanded to include universities, business partners, over 130 employees, and five buildings. Cannon Mills, located in Kannapolis, North Carolina, was at one time the largest manufacturer of sheets and towels in the world. Founded in 1906, the mills went through several ownership changes before being acquired by the Pillowtex Corporation in 1997. In 2003, Pillowtex Corporation closed its doors, laying off 4,340 people living in the Kannapolis area. Less

The records of the North Carolina State University Department of Biological and Agricultural Engineering contain correspondence, scholarship information, course and curriculum information, departmental history, facilities and farm equipment information, legal documents, research project records, publications, photographs and slides, and files on departmental extension and outreach work. Also included are a number of technical drawings of farm equipment and structures patented by department personnel as well as films (many digitized and available online) of agricultural equipment and activities. There is also a large series of drawings and plans mainly of agricultural structures. Materials range in date from 1920 to 2013. Organized agricultural engineering education at North Carolina State began in 1917, as an offering of several related courses in the Department of Agronomy. In 1937, the program's name was changed, and the degree became a B.S. in Agricultural Engineering. In 1940, the program separated from Agronomy, becoming a full-fledged department.
