The North Carolina State University Athletics Photographs contain photographic prints, negatives, contact prints, slides, and transparencies that document the history of NC State athletics and supporting activities from 1893 to 2003. North Carolina College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts (later North Carolina State University) officially became involved in athletics when it financed the school's football team in 1893, the year after the team's first unofficial games. Other sports were organized by the early twentieth century. All teams began using the nickname "Wolfpack" in 1947. As of 2006, NC State University has eleven men's and eleven women's varsity athletic teams in the Atlantic Coast Conference. Less

The University Archives Photograph Collection, B. W. Wells Lantern Slides, 1920-1953, is comprised of glass lantern slides created by B. W. Wells with a 4 x 5-inch Graflex single-lens reflex camera for use in his research, instruction, and public presentations. The slides measure 3.25 inches by 4 inches. There are 551 slides, including 57 duplicates. Most of the slides are black-and-white, but 132 of them are color, hand-tinted by Wells himself. The slides show landscapes and plants from various regions of North Carolina, as well as maps, graphs, and diagrams that Wells reproduced from publications to illustrate points he made in his lectures and writings. At least 41 of the slides show landscapes in other parts of North America. Upon Wells' retirement in 1954, he left the slides in the Department of Botany, where they were housed in a wooden cabinet and used by the faculty and students. The slides were stored this way until they were transferred to the University Archives in 2005-2006. B. W. (Bertram Whittier) Wells (1884-1978) is most widely known for his study and preservation of North Carolina's natural environment. Wells headed North Carolina State College's Botany and Plant Pathology Department (later the Department of Plant Biology of North Carolina State University) from 1919 to 1949 and remained on the faculty until 1954. An early ecologist, Wells wrote on many topics: the insect galls of plants, the effects of salt on coastal vegetation, the origins of grassy balds in the Appalachian mountains, the plant communities of the Big Savannah of Pender County, North Carolina, and the possible formation by meteorites of the Carolina Bays in the eastern part of the state. However, Wells' most extensive work focused on savanna and pocosin vegetation. Wells traveled around North Carolina studying plants in their native environments. His work reached a wider audience through public lectures and the 1932 publication of his book, The Natural Gardens of North Carolina, reprinted in 1967 and 2002. Wells continued his advocacy and educational work during his retirement, and his legacy lives on in the B.W. Wells Association, formed after his death in December 1978. Less

The bulk of this records subgroup consists of black-and-white photographic prints that document the history of North Carolina State University’s physical campus and facilities from 1889 to the 1990s, but it also contains related color prints, negatives, contact prints, contact sheets, and slides. The images show interior and exterior views of buildings, outdoor facilities and constructed items, general campus views, views of the surrounding area, and aerial photographs. In addition, the photographs in this subgroup illustrate people, events, and activities related to the facilities and areas of campus they picture. This includes construction, renovations, beautification projects, groundbreakings, and dedication ceremonies. Some images demonstrate damage to or destruction of buildings, architectural and decorative details, and the moving of departments or items from one building to another. This subgroup also contains photographic copies of three-dimensional architectural models, architectural plans, artists renderings, sketches, floor plans, and maps In 1887, the North Carolina General Assembly passed legislation creating the North Carolina College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts, a land-grant institution to provide education, research, and extension services to the state. When the College opened in 1889, it consisted of a 62-acre site with one building. As the university's enrollment grew in the following decades, more land was acquired and more facilities were constructed. As of 2007, the University’s Raleigh campus consists of the Main Campus and Centennial Campus and comprises approximately 2,100 acres of land. Its hundreds of buildings house more than eight million square feet of built space and accommodate a community of over 31,000 students and faculty. Less

This collection is divided into five series, each containing a different kind of material: slides, photographs, negatives, other, and oversized. Subjects include aerial views; buildings and places; events; golf; maps, models, and renderings; other research parks; people, presentation materials; and transportation. The slides make up the most extensive postion of the Centennial Campus images, but the photograph series contains a small number of unique images. Between 1984 and 1985, Governor James B. Hunt, Jr. and Governor James G. Martin transferred over 800 acres of state land to North Carolina State University. The university, led by Chancellor Bruce Poulton, settled on the idea of creating Centennial Campus, a technopolis where university units, governmental entities, and private industry could share facilities and collaborate on projects. With the guidance of coordinator Claude E. McKinney, the campus attracted a variety of tenants, such as ABB, Red Hat, Inc., and the National Weather Service and saw the relocation of the College of Textiles and phased segments of the College of Engineering. In 1917, the first dean of agriculture took office, and the School of Agriculture was established in 1923. The name was changed to School of Agriculture and Life Sciences in 1964, and finally to College of Agriculture and Life Sciences in 1987. As of 2009, the College consists of 22 academic and extension departments, and runs the North Carolina Agricultural Research Service, the current name of the former Agricultural Experiment Station. The University Archives Photograph Collection, College of Design Photographs, 1930-1997, mainly includes photographs of faculty, staff, and students; general photographs of academic life within the College of Design; photographs of exhibits, displays, and specific art, architecture, landscape architecture, and industrial design projects; and a few photographs of Brooks Hall. There are also some miscellaneous photographs, publications, and other items. Between 1920 and 1948, North Carolina State University (formerly North Carolina State College of Agriculture and Engineering) offered degrees in architecture and architectural engineering through the School of Engineering. The NC State College of Design, originally called the School of Design, was founded in 1948. At that time it included two departments: Architecture and Landscape Architecture. Since its founding, the College of Design has expanded to include departments of Graphic Design, Industrial Design, and Art and Design. The College of Design is located in Brooks Hall. Less

The University Archives Photograph Collection, College of Education Photographs, 1910-1989 includes photographs of students, faculty, classes, research studies, and other activities related to the College of Engineering and Department of Psychology. Courses for training teachers were offered at North Carolina State College (North Carolina State University) by 1903, and the School of Education was established in 1927. After cutbacks during the Depression, the School of Education was reestablished in 1948 and included Agricultural Education, Psychology, Industrial Arts, Industrial Education, Recreation, Occupational Information and Guidance. By 1952, Mathematics and Science Education were added along with the Learning Resources Library. In 1960, the College became accredited through the National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) and has remained in good standing with NCATE ever since. Less

The University Archives Photograph Collection, College of Engineering Photographs, 1915-1993, mainly includes photographs of the faculty, staff, and students of various departments within the College of Engineering. A significant number of photographs documents research studies and laboratory work and equipment. Also included are photographs of award ceremonies, presentations and conferences, campus buildings, and promotional materials. Engineering classes have been taught since the first semester at North Carolina College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts (now North Carolina State University) in 1889. During the next few decades, specialized engineering curricula were developed, and the first engineering departments were formed. In 1923 these were all brought together under the School of Engineering. Subsequent development has resulted in additional departments, centers, and degree programs. The University Archives Photograph Collection, College of Humanities and Social Science Photographs documents the people, departments, and activities of the College. Included in the collection are photographs from the following departments: English, History, Liberal Arts, Modern Languages, Philosophy and Religion, Speech, Social Work, and Sociology. Also included are negatives of the debate team and photographs of the March of Dimes telecast. Established as a distinct college in 1963, the College of Humanities and Social Sciences represents the intellectual core of the university. As of 2009, CHASS is the second largest college at North Carolina State University, CHASS offers 60 bachelor’s programs, 15 master’s programs and 4 Ph.D programs to close to 5000 undergraduate and graduate students. The College comprises the following departments: Communication, English, Foreign Languages and Literatures, History, Interdisciplinary Studies, Philosophy and Religion, Psychology School of Public and International Affairs (Political Science and Public Administration), Social Work, and Sociology and Anthropology. The College of Natural Resources photographs include portraits and candid shots of students and faculty in classes, labs, and outdoor settings. Prominent faculty members pictured include Carl Alwin Schenck, Richard J. Preston, and Clarence E. Libby. Photographs of meetings, conferences, events, and awards receptions are included. This collection also contains images of the buildings, laboratories, and equipment associated with the College of Natural Resources. Although the majority of the photographs are undated, these photographs range approximately from the late 1930s to the late 1990s; most are from the 1950s to the 1970s. The majority of these photographs are black and white. In 1929, North Carolina State College formally established the Department of Forestry. In 1931, the Department of Forestry was renamed the Division of Forestry, and in 1950, the Division of Forestry was elevated to School status and renamed the School of Forestry. The School of Forestry became the School of Forest Resources in 1968, and the College of Forest Resources in 1987. Finally, in 2000, the College of Forest Resources assumed its present name, the College of Natural Resources. As of 2010, the College of Natural Resources includes the Department of Forestry and Environmental Resources, the Department of Parks, Recreation and Tourism Management, and the Department of Wood and Paper Science. The North Carolina State University College of Physical and Mathematical Sciences Photographs, 1963-2002 and undated, include black and white photographs of classrooms; students; faculty, administration, and staff; various labs and equipment; events; and other programs and activities associated with the college's five departments. Of particular note are the photographs of the computer lab and an early photograph of the construction of the North Carolina State University nuclear reactor. In 1960, the departments of Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics, and Experimental Statistics joined to form the School of Physical Sciences and Applied Mathematics. In 1965, the Dept. of Biochemistry was formed within the school. The school became the College of Physical and Mathematical Sciences in 1987. As of 2008, the College of Physical and Mathematical Sciences includes five major programs. These programs include Chemistry; Marine, Earth and Atmospheric Science; Mathematics; Physics; and Statistics. Less

The collection of College of Textiles photographs depict the school's people, activities, and facilities from its early days in Tompkins Hall to a few recent photographs from Centennial Campus. Many photographs of equipment and machinery are included, as well as laboratories and other facilities. A portion of the collection also features students of the college and their academic activities, including class portraits and Style Shows. The North Carolina College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts (later North Carolina State University) was founded in 1887 and expanded the textiles program through the early 1910s, and beyond. The Textile Exposition and Style Show provided students the opportunity to display their work. Research efforts of the college have aided war efforts and contributed to medical developments. The college has also been closely involved with the textile and other industries through the extension and applied research programs. Less

The North Carolina State College of Veterinary Medicine was established in 1978. It admitted its first class of DVM students in August 1981, dedicated its main facility in April 1983, and graduated its first class of veterinarians in May 1985. In addition to its academic program, the college provides on-site continuing education and outreach programs for more than 4,000 clients annually. The faculty routinely participates in continuing education and outreach programs throughout North Carolina, across North America, and around the world. Located on a 180-acre campus in west Raleigh, the facilities at the College are used for instruction, research, clinical service and outreach, and its Laboratory Animal Resource unit maintains more than 25 vertebrate and invertebrate species for these purposes. The University Archives Photograph Collection, Continuing Education Photographs, 1935-1993, mainly includes photographs of students, faculty, and staff from the 1940s and 1950s in classes and workshops. There are several photographs of sport fishing, boats, and students at the Bogue Sound. Photographs from commencement ceremonies, truck driver training school, and the Encore Center are also included. In keeping with the land-grant tradition of the university, Continuing and Professional Education offers noncredit education and training to the people of North Carolina. CPE encompasses three sub-units: Office of Professional Development, The Computer Training Unit, and McKimmon Conference and Training Center, focusing on the development, facilitation, and delivery of continuing education and professional programs for business, industry, and other organizations. Broad-based national conferences on a variety of timely topics as well as intensive, highly focused seminars and workshops take advantage of the very best campus as well as non-campus instructional resources, while up-to-date computer training is also available on a variety of different levels and on a wide range of topics. Special efforts are made to meet the training needs of industry and government agencies through general as well as customized offerings. The university awards Continuing Education Units to participants in qualified programs. CEUs are part of a nationwide system that provides a uniform measure of attainment in noncredit educational programs. Less

The negatives depict a wide variety of subjects, with particular emphasis on the North Carolina State University campus and buildings, administrators and faculty, and athletics. There are also some negatives that depict the activities of the North Carolina Agricultural Extension Service. North Carolina State University is a research-extensive, land grant institution located in Raleigh, North Carolina. Founded in 1887 as the North Carolina College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts under the auspices of the federal Morrill Act of 1862, the school held its first classes in the fall of 1889. This collection consists of glass negatives and lantern slides chiefly depicting various aspects of agriculture in North Carolina and buildings on the campus of N.C. State University. Subjects include agricultural extension work, agricultural research, farms and farm life, animal husbandry, botany, horticulture, and crop science. One set of slides shows the university's first nuclear reactor; another comprises song slides that were presumably used at 4-H meetings or camps in the state. Many of the slides are hand-colored. Also included in the collection are photographic prints made from some of the negatives, manuscript material from the original storage containers, and examples of the original storage envelopes. The North Carolina College of Agricultural and Mechanic Arts was founded as the state's land-grant institution in 1887, and formally opened its doors two years later. Renamed the North Carolina State College of Agriculture and Engineering in 1917, the school became part of the Consolidated University of North Carolina (later the University of North Carolina System) in 1932. Photographs of people, activities, events, exhibitions, and programs related to home demonstration work in North Carolina from 1910 to 1976. Home demonstration, part of the North Carolina Agricultural Extension service, sought to provide better conditions in farm homes through adult education by demonstration, and North Carolina was one of five Southern states where it originated. It grew to over 65,000 women organized in 2,500 clubs throughout all of North Carolina's 100 counties by the mid-1960s, and in 1995 it became the Department of Family and Consumer Sciences in the North Carolina Cooperative Extension Service. Established as a land-grant state college, North Carolina State University was required by law to include military training and education in its curriculum. N.C. State University's Department of Military Science and Tactics was introduced in 1894 under the direction of United States Navy Lieutenant Richard Henderson.
