The North Carolina Cooperative Extension Service, Office of the Director Records contain correspondence, memoranda, brochures, budgets, reports, project agreements, legal documents, datasets, training documents, scrapbooks, videocassettes, photographs, CD-ROMs, and floppy disks. Topics covered include the day-to-day administrative functions of Cooperative Extension, special training programs, awards ceremonies, state legislation, projects funded by the Southern Region Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education Program, partnerships with commercial agricultural growers' associations, and the civil case Philip Bazemore versus William Friday. Materials range in date from 1907 to 2010. From its inception as the North Carolina College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts, North Carolina State University has been deeply involved in outreach and extension work. In the 1890s and early 1900s, college personnel took part in numerous Farmer's Institutes statewide, where they and state Agriculture Department personnel met with local farmers to discuss farm improvement techniques. In 1907 James A. Butler became North Carolina's first county agent, hired to conduct demonstration work in boll weevil eradication. Greatly boosting extension work, the 1914 Smith-Lever Act provided for federal, state, and county cooperation in creating a system to expand demonstration and extension work for men and women. The law authorized land-grant colleges to sign memoranda of understanding with the United States Department of Agriculture to begin such work. With this, NC State created a new Department of Extension. The county offices report to Extension administration, based jointly at NC State University and North Carolina A&T University. Through this system, Cooperative Extension aims to disseminate information about food and agriculture, health and nutrition, and youth development. Although extension and demonstration work in North Carolina had been active since the early years of the twentieth century, the North Carolina Agricultural Extension Service was only officially created in 1914 as a result of the Smith-Lever Act. The North Carolina Cooperative Extension Service, Plant Disease and Insect Clinic Records contain materials on plant samples sent to the clinic, clinic lab records, publications, bibliographies, and slides. Materials range in date from the 1930s to 1999. The Plant Disease and Insect Clinic at NC State University provides plant disease diagnostic and insect identification services to help the people of North Carolina grow healthy plants and crops. Homeowners, gardeners, landscape architects, and farmers may submit samples to the clinic for analysis. Specialists will then recommend ways to treat or prevent the problem.The Plant Disease and Insect Clinic was established as the Plant Disease Clinic in the Department of Plant Pathology at NC State in 1951. With the addition of entomologists from the Department of Entomology in 1970, it became the Plant Disease and Insect Clinic. The Plant Disease and Insect Clinic is a member of the National Plant Diagnostic Network and the Southern Plant Diagnostic Network. Less

Materials range in date from 1990 to 2011. Also included in these files are financial records, annual reports, budget committee files, membership rosters, brochures, meeting agendas, applications for awards, and correspondence. The North Carolina Extension Association of Family and Consumer Sciences exists to be the voice for professionals in Extension Education in Family and Consumer Sciences, provide an information network for its members, provide continuing education for Extension professionals, and to recognize extension professionals through awards and recognition. The records of the North Carolina Extension and Community Association document the activities of the association from 1916 to 2011, with the bulk of the records falling between 1929 and 1975. The files contain correspondence and memoranda, programs and brochures, reports, meeting minutes and agenda, member lists, financial information, clippings, news releases, photographs, and handbooks and yearbooks. The association was organized in 1920 as the Federation of Home Bureaus, and the name changed to the Federation of Home Demonstration Clubs in 1924. An African-American organization was formed in 1940, and it integrated with its white counterpart in 1966. The current designation was assumed in 1995. Less

In the 1960's, North Carolina State University's School of Engineering created a new undergraduate degree-granting program, "Engineering Operations", designed to train engineers to solve industrial problems. Formerly known as the Faculty Council and the Advisory Committee of the General Faculty, the Faculty Senate provides advice to the Chancellor and, through the Chancellor, to the Board of Trustees. In this role, the Faculty Senate discusses with or provides information to any administrator with authority and responsibility for a decision, recommends policies to any administrator who is authorized to make a decision, and makes policy recommendations to the Chancellor, Provost and Vice Chancellors. The records include bulletins, brochures, graduate programs, course catalogs, and a CD. Also included are electronic issues of the Graduate School Catalog, 2003-2018. Graduate instruction began at North Carolina State University in 1893, with the first Master's degree conferred in 1894 doctoral degree in 1926. A Graduate School existed from 1923 to 1931, but it was eliminated with the consolidation of the public universities in North Carolina. It was re-established at NC State during the 1950s. Less

The North Carolina State University, Libraries Publications contain publications, brochures, and other printed items about the University libraries. The first library at North Carolina State University was established in 1889 in a room in Holladay Hall. In 1925 a new purpose-built library building was constructed (now Brooks Hall). In 1954 the current D.H. Hill Library building was opened (originally just the east wing of the current structure). The library space was expanded in 1971 by building an 11-story book tower and connecting the original space with the former student union (now the Erdahl-Cloyd or west wing). Further expansion and renovation occurred in the 1980s, culminating in 1990 with the opening of the second (or "south") bookstack tower. In 2013 the award-winning James B. Hunt Library opened on the university’s Centennial Campus. In 2016, NC State University Libraries won the National Medal for Museum and Library Service, bestowed by the Institute for Museum and Library Service. The medal was presented by First Lady Michelle Obama to Director Susan Nutter during a ceremony. Susan Nutter retired from the Libraries in 2017, after an esteemed 30 year tenure. Less

This subgroup contains three scrapbooks from the North Carolina State University Libraries Staff Association that cover the group's activities for the years 1956 to 2011, as well as other meeting minutes, flyers, by-laws, photographs, and publications of the Staff Association. The North Carolina State University Libraries Staff Association is charged with promoting the welfare of its members through social and educational activities, to provide a means of expressing staff opinions, and to promote high standards in library service. The association holds events to enhance the social and work environment and to unite everyone through fun and meaningful activities, both on the job and away from work. Less

This subgroup contains a circulation log for the period 1897-1899, and a request notification postcard, circa 1936-1939. In the early years of North Carolina State College, the circulation of books was managed by the university librarian and a group of student assistants. In the 1930s, librarian William Porter Kellam organized the library into five departments: reference, ordering, cataloging, periodicals, and circulation, which would later become Access and Delivery Services. Robert W. Severance was the first circulation librarian, followed by Harlan Brown. In the 2010s, the department's name was changed to Access Services with a mission to develop and implement services that connect users with experts, collections, technology, and spaces. Less

Records relating to Libraries' compliance with federal affirmative action mandate in the 1970s. These records include the the Affirmative Action plan created by the library and the university in response to the U.S. Department of Health, Education and Welfare (H.E.W.) compliance report, which is also included in the collection. Other materials include university correspondence related to affirmative action and affirmative action committee meeting agendas and minutes. Additionally, there is supplemental material that was used to advise in the creation of an affirmative action plan, such as plans from other universities, articles, statistical and demographic information, and guidelines and laws related to affirmative action and equal employment oppurtunities. North Carolina State University filed its first Affirmative Action plan with the United States government in 1974, establishing efforts to increase female and minority student enrollment, and working on standards affecting female and minority faculty and staff at the University. This report was filed in response to a compliance review by the U.S. Department of Health, Education and Welfare (H.E.W.) on North Carolina's universities, which found that N. C. State was not in compliance with laws realted to equal employment oppurtunities. Each school and office, including D. H. Hill Jr. Library, created their own Affirmative Action plan which was then synthesized and compiled by the university. Less

The Assistant Director for Organizational Design and Learning oversaw the Personnel Services, Diversity Initiatives, and Staff Development and Training programs in the NC State University Libraries. This collection contains the records and working files of the North Carolina State University Libraries' Associate Director for Public Services, including correspondence, reports, statistics; primarily reference and interlibrary loan, but also records of the Circulation Department, 1910 to 1983. The North Carolina State University Libraries’ Associate Director for Public Services was primarily concerned with meeting the needs of the Libraries’ users including students, faculty, staff, and the outlying community. There was some overlap in terms of responsibilities and therefore records of the Public Services Council, Assistant Director for Reference Services, and the Assistant Director for General Services. Topics addressed by Public Services included photocopy services, interlibrary loan of materials, reference services, usability of library collection guides, and serials cataloging.
