The Groz-Beckert Portfolio of Print Reproductions Related to the History of the Knitting Industry contain reproductions of engravings mainly from Denis Diderot's Encyclopedia of Trades and Industry, first published in 1763. There are two engravings that are not from the Encyclopedia. The engravings depict scenes of workers in factories, shops, and mills, usually producing apparel. The portfolio dates to circa 1974. Denis Diderot was a prominent philosopher during the Enlightenment. His most famous work was the Encyclopedia ("Encyclopedie"), a massive, multi-volume compilation of world knowledge richly illustrated with engravings. The Encyclopedia was groundbreaking in its inclusion of the "mechanical arts," or crafts and trades, as exemplified in these engravings.This portfolio was produced by the company Groz-Beckert, a company that manufactures needles for textile production. This collection contains material donated by Dr. Perry L. Grady, Emeritus Associate Dean and Professor at the North Carolina State University College of Textiles (COT). Included are course outlines, student works, program advisory committee meeting minutes, photographs, photographic slides and videotapes documenting the history of the North Carolina State University College of Textiles and the textiles industry. Dr. Perry L. Grady has taught and conducted extensive research in textiles in instrument and control system design and development, computer applications, energy utilization and conservation, electrotechnology applications, fiber and yarn production and properties, and garment and textile care.
