The Cathy Sterling Papers include correspondence, texts of speeches, reports, clippings, photographs, and artifacts relating to Cathy Sterling's tenure, 1970-1971, as Student Body President at North Carolina State University. Many of the materials focus on Sterling's status as North Carolina State University's first female student body president, as well as her involvement in protest movements against the Vietnam War, which included organizing a campus Peace Retreat. The materials range in date from 1966 to 1999, with the bulk of the materials being from 1970 to 1972. Cathy (now known as Kate) Sterling served as the first female student body president at North Carolina State University, 1970-1971. She conducted a successful write-in campaign with a platform that focused on students’ rights and the administration’s use of student fees. In the Spring of 1970, Sterling married Gene Messick, a graduate of the School (now College) of Design at NC State and director of the multimedia program at Stewart Theatre. Soon after, Messick accepted a teaching position at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York, and Sterling moved to Ithaca to join him after the conclusion of her term as Student Body President. However, Sterling remained active in NC State’s Student Government activities throughout the 1971-1972 academic year. The J. Robert Cooke Papers contain a 1959 campaign button from Bob Cooke's campaign for student government vice president at NC State College, a 2013 video recording of an oral history interview in which Cooke recalls his life and career, and a 2017 listing of Cooke's publications and unpublished manuscripts and papers, and the Preface to the Directory of The Internet-First University Press, with cover letter, 2019. There are also historical materials compiled in 2022 on the occasion of Student Governments' Centennial. James Robert "Bob" Cooke served as vice president (1959-1960) and president (1960-1961) of Student Government at NC State College. He was active in numerous campus organizations such as Alpha Zeta, the College Union, and the Rules Committee. He graduated from NC State in 1961. In 1966 he began teaching at Cornell University. The Joab L. Thomas Papers include a copy of A Resolution of Commendation for Chancellor Joab L. Thomas, passed unanimously by the Student Senate (1981 April 15). There is also a transcription from a tape of Thomas' remarks to deans, directors, and department heads at the time of his resignation as chancellor and the announcement of his appointment as president of the University of Alabama (1981 March 25). The collection also includes items from Thomas's earlier career at the University of Alabama, particularly letters of congratulation upon his appointment as Vice President of Student Affairs in 1974. Joab Langston Thomas was the chancellor of North Carolina State University from 1976 to 1981, president of the University of Alabama from 1981 to 1988, professor at the University of Alabama from 1961 to 1975, and vice president for Student Affairs at the University of Alabama from 1974 to 1975. The Kanton T. Reynolds Papers contain name tags and business cards from student government, a Technician newspaper, photographs from Reynolds' time as student government Chief Justice, and student government projects and papers. Subjects include preventing destructive student celebrations, NC State University basketball, and student government goals. Also included in this collection are a few items from Tasha Youngblood, Student Body Treasurer. Materials range from 1992 to 1995 with several undated items. Kanton T. Reynolds graduated from North Carolina State University in 1995 with a B.S. in Industrial Engineering. As a student, he ran unopposed and won the position of Chief Justice for student government in the 1994 election. He was a member of the National Society of Black Engineers and Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity. Reynolds went on to earn a Masters of Industrial Engineering and Business Administration in 1997 and 2005. He then received his Ph.D. from North Carolina A&T University in 2014. After spending twenty years in the corporate realm, Dr. Reynolds came back to NC State University as the Director of Undergraduate Programs for the Edward P. Fitts Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering in 2017. Less
