The Alan Sykes Collection of NC State Athletics Publications and Memorabilia (1930-2013) contains publications from the NCSU Basketball and Football teams, NCSU memorabilia, newspapers, Agromecks, alumni magazines, and scrapbooks. The memorabilia consists of foam fingers, cups and bottles, flags, stickers, photos, and more. These materials were collected by Alan Sykes, an NC State Wolfpack fan. Athletics began officially at the North Carolina College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts on March 12, 1892 when a football team made up of students at the college defeated the Raleigh Male Academy, a local high school, by the score 12-6. That fall, the faculty and trustees of the college first became involved with intercollegiate athletics. Since 1947 athletic teams at North Carolina State have been known as the Wolfpack. The University has been a member of the Atlantic Coast Conference since it was formed in 1953. Less

The Albert Harvey Grimshaw Papers contains a photocopy, a microfilm copy and the original letter of indenture of apprenticeship document for Amos James Grimshaw to James Mather Daltry, to learn the "Art, trade, and business of a reed maker and Heald Knitter." This document was registered in the county of Lancaster, England, on 1867 May 11. There is also a typewritten copy of the "Grimshaw Newsletter," 1944. This newsletter covers events in the lives of Grimshaw's classmates at North Carolina State University. Rhode Island native Albert Harvey Grimshaw (1883-1949) received his education from the Massachusetts School of Pharmacy, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Columbia University, North Carolina State College, and the New Bedford Textile School. He was a pharmacist and wrestling coach before becoming an instructor in chemistry and dyeing at the New Bedford Textile School in 1917. In 1925 Grimshaw left New Bedford for North Carolina State College, where he served as professor of Textile Chemistry and Dyeing for 24 years. During this time, he published articles in almost all of the textile trade journals in the United States. He was a member of numerous professional societies, including the American Association of Textile Chemists and Colorists and the American Institute of Chemists. In 1948, The N.C. State College Chapter of Delta Kappa Phi presented a large portrait of Grimshaw to the School of Textiles. Less

The Alexander Quarles Holladay Papers consist of photographs, letters, a speech, a notebook, a memory book, and a certificate of Holladay's Civil War military commission. The memory book is from Holladay's final year as a student at the University of Virginia. The speech given at the presentation of his portrait provides a genealogy dating to 1702. Some photographs of Shakespearean engravings are included. Other materials relate to Holladay's tenure as the first president of North Carolina College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts (later North Carolina State University) and include a "Book of Incidental Expenses" kept by Holladay during the first year, 1889-1890. The published books are items that had been in the Holladay family. Alexander Quarles Holladay (1839-1909) was a Civil War veteran, lawyer, educator, Virginia state senator, and college president. He was named the first president of North Carolina College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts (later North Carolina State University) upon its opening in 1889 and remained so for ten years until his retirement in 1899. The Bill Hansley Photographs, 1985-1990, contain 35mm negatives, 35mm slides, contact sheets, and 8x10 work prints related to events and students at North Carolina State University. These events include numerous football and basketball games as well as other sporting events such as gymnastics, fencing, soccer, and track and field. Many of the basketball games include images of Coach Jim Valvano. Other events include the North Carolina State Fair and various campus events for students. Also included are images depicting student life on campus. All photographs were taken for NC State University Student Media publications. Bill Hansley was a student at North Carolina State University from 1985-1990. While studying he worked as a photographer for two NC State University student publications, Technician and Agromeck. The Charles Burgess Williams Papers, 1895 - 1953, contain items relating to Williams' time at North Carolina College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts. During his tenure as a student, researcher, and professor, the institution was renamed North Carolina State College of Agriculture and Engineering (later North Carolina State University). The collection contains personal documents, professional materials documenting his contributions to the study of agriculture, published and unpublished biographical pieces, and materials relating to the history of North Carolina State University. Charles Burgess Williams (1871 - 1947) was a scientist and an educator. He received a B.A. and M.A. in agriculture from the North Carolina College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts. He spent his career at the College as a professor, chemist, department head, dean, and leader in the North Carolina Agricultural Experiment Station. Less

The Charles Pearson Papers consist of biographical materials, professional materials, and photographs documenting Pearson's family and childhood, student days at the North Carolina College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts (later North Carolina State University), and career as a civil engineer in North Carolina, Georgia, and Alabama. Charles A. Pearson (1875-1966) was born in Asheville, North Carolina, and graduated with a bachelor's degree in engineering from the North Carolina College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts in 1894. During a six-decade career, he was first a partner in an architectural firm, then worked for various engineering firms, contractors, and railroad companies, supervising the construction of many highway and railroad bridges, and other civil engineering projects, in North Carolina and the South. Also included is information (including keyboard instructions) on the carillon in the Memorial Bell tower on the North Carolina State University campus. Chris Gould has been a professor of physics at North Carolina State University, beginning in 1971. His reserach specialized in nuclear physics, especially neutrino physics, parity and time reversal symmetries, and other areas. Gould holds a B. S. degree in physics from Imperial College, London (1965); and M. S. and Ph.D. degrees in physics from the University of Pennsylvania (1966, 1969). He is a fellow of the American Physical Society. The Daniel Harvey Hill Jr. (1859 - 1924) Papers, 1883 - 1955, contain items relating to Hill's career at North Carolina College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts (later North Carolina State University) as an English professor, Vice President, and President. Many of the materials document Hill's professional career, particularly his appointment to and resignation from the presidency of the College. There are also manuscript drafts of texts Hill wrote on the Civil War and on his father, General Daniel Harvey Hill. A small number of personal materials are also included. The bulk of the materials dates from 1908 to early 1920s. Daniel Harvey Hill Jr. (1859-1924) was an educator, college president, writer, and historian. He received a B.A., M.A. and Doctor of Literature degree from Davidson College. In 1908 he became the third president of the North Carolina College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts, where he served from 1908 to 1916. The D. H. Hill Library on the NC State campus was named for him. Less

The Don Schmidt Collection of NC State Athletics Memorabilia includes rugs, newspaper clippings, magazines, bumper stickers, basketball cards, keychains, buttons and pins, media guides, and other artifacts related to the history of NC State Athletics, primarily the Men's Basketball program. Materials range in date from 1975 to 2000. Don Schmidt is an NC State alumnus and employee in Outreach, Communications, & Consulting. The Ed Caram Negatives contain photographic negatives taken by Caram during his time as a student at NC State, from approximately 1969 to 1975. Topics photographed include athletics (particularly basketball and football), campus buildings, political rallies, student protests, outdoor events, concerts, daily student life, speakers, and the State Fair, among others. Negatives in Cardbox 13 and Microfilm Boxes 16 and 17 may have been taken by Nick England, another student photographer for the Technician. Ed Caram was a photographer for Student Media, with many photos appearing in the Technician student newspaper and perhaps the Agromeck yearbook as well. The Edward Lamar Cloyd Papers consist of personal and professional material documenting Cloyd's tenure as Dean of Students at North Carolina State College (later North Carolina State University) and his extensive involvement in community affairs in the Raleigh, North Carolina, area. The papers date from 1915-1973. Edward Lamar Cloyd entered the Agricultural and Mechanical College in Raleigh (later North Carolina State University) in 1910 and received a Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering degree in 1915. In 1918, Cloyd began his career with North Carolina State College as an instructor of mechanical drawing, and became the Dean of Students in 1921. In 1927, North Carolina State College granted Cloyd a Master of Science degree in Industrial Management. Cloyd served as Dean of Students until 1957. Less

The Edwin F. Harris Papers, 1957-2014, collection contains drawings, blueprints, maps, correspondence, photographs, and other documents related to the professional career of Edwin F. Harris. The collection reflects Harris’ work as an architect on a number of university campus planning projects and commercial building projects. During his more than two decades of employment with North Carolina State University, Harris contributed to the design and construction of many portions of the university, including Centennial Campus and the College of Veterinary Medicine. Harris also contributed to the design of several commercial buildings in North Carolina’s Research Triangle and buildings on other North Carolina university campuses. These projects include The Carolina Theatre and the North Carolina Biotechnology Center in Durham, the Worrell Professional Center at Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem, and the YMCA at Guilford College in Greensboro. Edwin F. Harris, nicknamed "Abie," was born January 7, 1934, in Elkin, North Carolina. He graduated from Elkin High School in 1952 and enrolled at the North Carolina State College, School of Design (later North Carolina State University, College of Design) to pursue a Bachelor of Arts in architecture. He graduated with honors in 1957. Harris was awarded the 45th Paris Prize in Architecture in 1958 which he used to travel to Paris, after a period of Army service. After returning from Paris, he became a lecturer at the NC State University School of Design and joined Leif Valand and Associates as an Architect-in-Training. In 1966 he was a co-founder and partner of Harris & Burns, Architects (1966-1968) and then a co-founder and principle for Envirotek, Inc. (1969-1974). In 1966, Harris also joined the campus planning department at NC State University. In 1970 he became Director of Facilities Planning and in 1980 University Architect. In addition to being an avid runner, Edwin F. Harris spent much of his spare time participating in design competitions and serving as a consultant on various projects. His honors include the grand prize in a planning competition for the University of Miami in 1986, his election as an American Institute of Architects Fellow in 1987, and the 9th Annual Frank B. Turner Award in 1991. Less

The Ellis B. Cowling Papers contain files from 1957 to 2013 that include reports, notes, writings, research data, memos, correspondence, and newspaper clippings documenting Ellis B. Cowling's career. There are correspondence, publications, media clippings from newspapers, websites and magazines, drafts and reports from the Ad Hoc Committee at North Carolina State University and photographs all related to the move of Cape Hatteras Lighthouse in 1999. There are also articles, correspondence, grant application materials, presentation materials, newsletters, newspaper clippings, and reports related to Cowling's animal waste research work, pertaining in particular to the Out-of-the-Box Thinking group. Additionally there are articles, background information, brochures, correspondence and news articles related to Cowling's involvement with the installation of Marye Anne Fox as Chancellor of North Carolina State University, the Watauga Seminar and the Faculty Senate. The largest series on the Southern Oxidants Study (SOS) contains annual meetings agendas, correspondence, presentation materials and reports related both directly to SOS and to its collaboration with other organizations. There is also extensive material about the Data Analysis Workshop conducted by SOS. In addition to these paper materials, there are also floppy disks, slides and photographs related to the Southern Oxidants Study (SOS). Finally, there are also audiovisual materials, primarily videotapes and cassette tapes. Most of the cassette tapes contain lectures Cowling gave over the course of a semester to the graduate-level PP [Plant Pathology] 650 course, although it is unclear what the course would have been titled since it no longer exists. Dr. Ellis B. Cowling is a University Distinguished Professor At-Large Emeritus of Forestry and Plant Pathology at North Carolina State University. Dr. Cowling specializes in biochemistry of wood decay, conservation of essential elements by forest trees, diseases of forest trees and deterioration of timber products, role of nitrogen in coevolution of forest trees and wood-destroying fungi, and integrated management of plant diseases. His other research interests include man-induced changes in the chemical climate and their effects on terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems, and the role of scientists in public decision making. Dr. Cowling helped develop a nationwide system for monitoring acid deposition called the National Atmospheric Deposition Program (NADP). His appointment as the Chairman of the Ad Hoc Committee of Faculty at North Carolina State University contributed to the preservation and relocation of the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse in North Carolina. This subgroup contains minutes of meetings of the Board of Trustees of the Endowment Funds of North Carolina State University, 1974-2010. Some minutes also contain correspondence, financial statements, bylaws, and other documents. The Board of Trustees of the Endowment Funds of North Carolina State University was established in 1974 by a North Carolina statute authorizing North Carolina State University, as an institution of the University of North Carolina System, to establish a permanent fund that would be administered by a five-member board to include the Chancellor and the Chair of NC State University's Board of Trustees. This collection of photographs contains black-and-white photographic prints depicting NC State baseball coaches Vic Sorrel and Sam Esposito, was well as the 1968 College World Series-winning team. These were owned by Frank Weedon and may have been displayed in his office on the NC State campus. Frank Weedon (1931-2013) had a long career in NC State Athletics from 1960 to 1996. He was the Sports Information Director until 1971 when he became Assistant Athletics Director. In retirement, he assumed the role of unofficial NC State athletics historian. Less

The George A. Gullette Papers contain documents from the beginning and end of the NC State career of this social studies professor. There is correspondence from 1947 regarding the college's interest in hiring Gullette to commence its social studies program (beginning with a contemporary civilization course modeled on one at Columbia University). Gullette's responses give insight into salary negotiations of the time period. A Lecture Given by the Late George A. Gullette To a Class in Social Studies is a printed version of a talk Gullette gave at North Carolina State University on January 13, 1969. The title Gullette gave this lecture is Prospects for the Future--The Next Twenty-Five Years. On March 19, 1970, the Friends of the Library distributed copies of the lecture at its annual banquet. In addition, portions of the lecture were read at Gullette's memorial service. George Albert Gullette (1909 - 1969) was the founder and head of the Social Studies Department at North Carolina State College of Agriculture and Engineering (after 1965, North Carolina State University) from 1947 to 1969. He received his B.A. in English literature from Harvard University in 1933, his M.A. from Vanderbilt University in 1934, and his Ph.D. from the University of Michigan in 1944. Before coming to NC State, Gullette taught at the University of Toledo (1936-1946) and Lincoln College (1946-1947). Less

This collection contains a genealogy of the Herman Ward Taylor family, material on the Methodist Church related to world hunger, and Taylor's United States Army discharge papers. Taylor's correspondents include R. J. Reynolds Jr., Charles Reynolds, Gov. Robert W. Scott, Roy Park, and Ralph Scott. Also included are records from the North Carolina State University Alumni Association, Board of Trustees, and Board of Governors. Information from 1962 to 1965 documents N.C. State's name-changing process. Taylor's "Talks" articles describe campus life from the period 1918 to 1926. "Pop" Taylor received a B.S. in Agricultural Education (1926) and an M.S. in Agronomy (1927) from North Carolina State College (later North Carolina State University), where a slight age advantage over his classmates earned him his nickname. He worked for the United States Department of Agriculture in North Carolina and in Washington, D.C., before returning to Raleigh as the Director of Alumni Affairs at North Carolina State College in 1942. He retired in 1965, and served Wake County as a representative in the North Carolina General Assembly from 1968 to 1970. He was awarded the Watauga Medal in 1978. Less
