This collection contains a U.S. Patent mounted on a plaque-1999, Dissertation-1962, handwritten data, X-rays, and correspondence. Professor Dr. Chen-Loung Chen died on November 14, 2009 in Raleigh, NC. He was born on October 20, 1930 in Taipei, Taiwan and received his PhD in Organic Chemistry from the University of Heidelberg, Heidelberg, Germany.In 1972, Dr. Chen joined the faculty of the Department of Pulp and Paper Science at North Carolina State University, where he researched and taught for more than 30 years. The papers of Chester J. Lange, a prominent North Carolina veterinarian, are largely comprised of correspondence and organizational documents relating to his activities with the North Carolina Veterinary Medical Association (formerly called North Carolina State Veterinary Medical Association). Also included are newspaper clippings documenting his professional accomplishments. Information about the establishment of a veterinary school at North Carolina State University is included, as well as programs from conferences, flyers, and research notes. Chester J. Lange (April 14, 1910 - September 26, 1994) was a prominent veterinarian in Greensboro North Carolina. He received a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree from Cornell in 1932 and an M.S. degree in biology from Virginia Polytechnic Institute in 1938. He worked for the United States Department of Agriculture and served in World War II as a captain in the Veterinary Corps before opening an animal hospital in Greensboro. He was active in the North Carolina Veterinary Medical Association (formerly called North Carolina State Veterinary Medical Association), serving as secretary-treasurer and later as president. He was also involved with the Carolina Kennel Club and the Humane Society of Guilford County, and was the recipient of the NCVMA’s Veterinarian of the Year award. Less

This collection is comprised of approximately 110 sports cards for North Carolina State University athletes. Mostly cards are for football players, but some are for men's basketball players. Cards are from the players' colleges as well as professional careers. They range in date from circa 1970 to 2006, although some are undated. Christopher J. J. Thiry is a collector of sports cards. This collection contains correspondence, newspaper clippings, songs, stickers, financial records, and other internal documents, 1969 to 1980, of the Citizens for Ramsey Clark organization. These materials focus on the activities of the organization and the political life of Ramsey Clark. Most of the items relate to the efforts of the Citizens for Ramsey Clark to obtain a 1972 Presidential nomination from the Democratic Party for Clark. A sample of Ramsey Clark's writing is also included. The Citizens for Ramsey Clark organization existed from 1970 to 1980. The organization's membership included primarily politically liberal North Carolina State University faculty members. When the group formed in January of 1970 in Raleigh, North Carolina, its primary goal was to help Clark receive the 1972 Democratic Party nomination for President. The members of the group met weekly at the NC State University's Faculty Club on Thursday nights for dinner. Less

The Claire Necker Papers contain notes, drafts, compilations of images, clippings, artifacts, and publications relating to Necker's research interests on cats. The writings and illustrations in the collection includes notes and drafts as well as illustrations Necker compiled during research for publications. There are numerous notebooks listing publications. Additionally, there is artwork and artifacts relating to cats or other animals. The correspondence series is fairly short with mostly letters to Necker. A portion of the correspondence is with Guy Bogart, who traded lengthy typed letters with Necker and two other correspondents. Much of the material is undated, but likely dates from the 1960s-1980s with some clippings dating from the late 19th or early 20th century, or earlier. Claire Kral Necker was born Claire Kral Nemec on 16 October 1917. In 1939 she married Walter L. Necker, who was then completing a BS in zoology at the University of Chicago. She and Walter shared interests in science and bibliography. Walter worked with a variety of organizations as, at various times, scientist, librarian, curator and rare books cataloger. Claire earned Master's degrees in Zoology and Chemistry (when and where is not documented, though it was sometime before 1968), and after World War II she and Walter started Aardvark Books, a mail-order antiquarian book business. Claire and Walter divorced in 1968, and she found work at a local library. Claire had for some time pursued a career as a free-lance writer, but in 1969 she published her first book, Cats and Dogs (A. S. Barnes). Necker's other works include The Natural History of Cats (Delta, 1970), Supernatural Cats; An Anthology (Doubleday, 1972), Four Centuries of Cat Books (Scarecrow Press, 1972), and The Cat's Got Our Tongue (Scarecrow Press, 1973). She died 19 March 2010 in Pawling, New York. Less

The Clarence Hamilton Poe pamphlet contains Christmas wishes and an essay entitled A Call to All Who Love the South, in which he addresses southern culture and race relations. Clarence Hamilton Poe (1881 - 1964) became the editor of The Progressive Farmer in 1899 and formed the Progressive Farmer Company in 1903. He served as both president and editor of the company from 1903 until 1953, and retired as president in 1954. He then became the chairman of the board of directors and senior editor. Poe advocated better agriculture, health, and education for the people of North Carolina and the South. He was the Chairman of the Executive Committee of the Board of Trustees at North Carolina State College from 1920 to 1931, and a member of the Consolidated University of North Carolina Board of Trustees from 1931 to 1955. He received honorary degrees from several schools, including North Carolina State College (now North Carolina State University) and the University of North Carolina. Less

The Clyde F. Smith Papers contain literature, reprints, articles and books primarily pertaining to the insect family Aphididae, of the Order Homoptera. Two books, Bibliography of the Aphididae of the World (1972) and An Annotated List of Aphididae (Homoptera) of North America (1978) are indexes of the papers. Research materials consist of literature by noted authors from around the world who study aphids, their life cycles, reproduction variables, climate conditions, host plants and biological and chemical control. This collection is an extension of the Zeno Metcalf Collection. Also included are index cards on various Aphididae, which include an annotated generic and specific index to all literature cited in Smith's 1972 Bibliography of the Aphididae of the World, a host plant index indicating the aphids associated with each host and the source citing this association, and an index of aphid-parasitoids associations. Clyde F. Smith joined the faculty of the North Carolina State College Entomology Department in September 1939. He served as Head of N.C. State's Entomology Department from 1950 to 1964. Smith received his B.S. and M.S. degrees from Utah State University (then Utah State Agricultural College). He received his Ph.D. from The Ohio State University in 1939. In 1972-1973, Smith served as president of the Southeastern Branch of the Entomological Society of America. Less

The records of the Council Tool Company document the history and operation of the North Carolina-based company from its founding by John Pickett Council in 1886 to the end of the twentieth century. The collection contains the company’s correspondence, financial records, and materials relating to personnel, plant operations, and merchandise. This collection also contains papers of the Council family spanning several generations, beginning in the early 1800s and with a few items from the 18th century. Correspondence, invoices, order letters, bills of lading, and related materials relate to the company’s operations including manufacturing, sales, transportation, information requests, and clientele. Financial records include accounting records, tax records, correspondence with accountants, records from the fire of October 20, 1970, and records relating to stocks. Accounting records include account books (ledgers), day books, trial balances, annual reviews of the company, and payroll ledgers. Office Files contain various information about the Council Tool Company and its operations, including correspondence, personnel files, catalogs and product information, machinery and equipment, inventories, notes and memoranda, and information about labor unions, insurance, and board meetings. Also included with the business records are files on the pulpwood industry, test hacks with accompanying reports, and maps and drawings. The family papers contain correspondence, financial records, and legal documents belonging to family members, including K. K. Council, John Pickett Council, K. Clyde Council, Edward L. Council, and Louise Council and a poem by Kinchin B. Council. Deeds and land grants, as well as correspondence about estates and property, constitute a substantial portion of the family papers. Council Tool Company is a family owned and operated business based in Lake Waccamaw, North Carolina. The company was founded in 1886 by John Pickett Council, a turpentine producer and farmer in Bladen County, North Carolina. The company’s earliest product line featured tools used in the naval stores industry. When the naval stores industry began to wane, the company reacted by diversifying its product line. The company grew during the early decades of the twentieth century, surviving the Great Depression, two World Wars, and a devastating fire that destroyed much of the manufacturing plant. As of 2015, the company's full line of professional products included axes, picks, mauls, mattocks, striking tools, shrubbing tools, digging tools, wood-splitting tools, forged bars, C-clamps and a variety of specialty tools. The company has always been headed by a Council, and as of 2015, the president is John M. Council III. Less

Cyma Rubin is an award-winning director, producer, writer and curator. She is currently the president of Business of Entertainment Inc., in New York. Rubin formerly founded an interior and industrial design company, Cyma Ackerman, Inc., and a theatrical production company, Pyxidium, Ltd. She has actively supported numerous cultural programs and the arts. Rubin graduated from North Carolina State College of Agriculture and Engineering (later North Carolina State University) with a degree in textile management. The Cyma Rubin Papers, 1942-2016, document many of the projects Rubin has produced during her career, including interior design work; hosting events for the United Nations and for the American Symphony Orchestra; producing Broadway shows, movies, multimedia productions, television shows, and cultural productions for Nippon TV; and curating photographic exhibits and books. Included are correspondence, legal documents, photographs, programs, press releases, press clippings, scripts, promotional merchandise, research material, audiovisual material, and costumes related to theatrical and film productions and other projects. The Cyrus B. King Papers contain correspondence, political campaign materials, newsletters from a variety of local and national organizations, flyers, clippings, membership rosters, fundraising information, invitations, precinct maps, journal articles, newspaper editorials, and reports and resolutions on political issues. The majority of the material was generated through Cyrus King's work to promote civil rights and racial justice and his work on political campaigns. Correspondence includes letters to and from political figures. There are also documents that relate to his time as a librarian at North Carolina State University and a small amount of personal correspondence. Materials range in date from 1932 to 2014, with the majority dated after 1980. Cyrus Baldwin King (1922-2014), worked in the North Carolina State University Libraries for over twenty years and was active in a wide variety of efforts to promote civil rights and social justice. He was hired by N.C. State as an acquisitions librarian in 1963 and retired in 1984 as Assistant Director for Collection Management and Development. He was very politically active, writing tirelessly in support of the causes that he has adopted, most notably racial justice, campaigns to promote peace and non-violence, and other civil rights causes. The D. J. Rose and Son Architectural Drawings and Project Files consist of architectural drawings, project files, blueprints, and other materials relating to the construction projects of D. J. Rose and Son. These materials date from approximately 1907 to 1970. The hundreds of rolls of architectural drawings include works by some of North Carolina's leading architects, such as Benton and Benton of Wilson, North Carolina, John C. Stout of Rocky Mount, NC, and Joseph F. Leitner of Wilmington, NC. The collection also contains materials relating to the business operations of D. J. Rose and Son, including bank statements, receipts, invoices, personal journals, and correspondences. David Jeptha Rose (1861-1940) was a lifelong builder who moved from Johnston County to Rocky Mount in 1890. Rose established D. J. Rose and Son which is the oldest continuously operating general contracting firm in North Carolina. Rose's sons, Ira Woodall Rose and Dillon Jeptha Rose, joined the firm in 1930. After Rose's death in 1940, Ira and Dillon led the opeations of the company. The company completed construction projects not only in Rocky Mount, but throughout the eastern United States. Among their construction projects were textile and tobacco mills, banks, courthouses, railroad stations, power plants, hospitals, churches, and many other commercial and residential buildings. They worked with clients such as Carolina Telephone and Telegram, Atlantic Coastline Railroad, financial institutions, and pharmaceutical companies. The year 2015 marked D. J. The Dale Blosser Collection on Synergetics, Inc. and Other Projects consists of architectural and structural drawings and related documentation on Synergetics, Inc. projects throughout the United States. Among the drawings and records are plans for structures in North Carolina, New York, Ohio, Georgia, and Louisiana.There are also booklets from the North Carolina Division of School Planning as well as brochures, notes, correspondence, and some photos. A major part of the collection is architectural and structural drawings of New York's World Fair, Electric Power & Light Exhibit, also called the Tower of Light. The collection includes some materials that were not produced by Synergetics, Inc. The collection dates from 1952 to 1981. Dale Blosser was born in Brussels, Belgium on October 3, 1927. In 1956, Blosser graduated from North Carolina State University with a Bachelor of Architecture. Prior to North Carolina State College, he attended Clemson College (1945) and Carnegie Institute of Technology (1947-1949). He worked for Synergetics, Inc. from 1957 to 1963. Later, he founded a small firm that primarily offered construction administration services (rather than architectural design). Less

The Dale E. Sayers papers document Sayers' career as a researcher and educator, from his work as an undergraduate at the University of California at Berkeley to his teaching and research career as a professor of physics at North Carolina State University. Sayers was a co-developer of the modern extended x-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) technique, which, according to Sayers, "allows atomic structural information to be determined in complex systems." In addition to EXAFS, his research interests included x-ray absorption spectroscopy, amorphous materials, mammography technology, synchrotron radiation, and environmental science. Sayers' extensive planning work on the NC STAR Storage Ring Project (North Carolina Storage Rings for Advanced Research) is one of the main subjects documented here. Other research project files included in these papers are Joint Economic Development Initiative - Advanced Light Technologies (JEDI-ALT) and the Department of Defense's Technology Reinvestment Project (TRP). These research files also include information on Sayers involvement in projects with the National Synchrotron Light Source (NSLS), the Advanced Light Source (ALS), the Canadian Light Source (CLS), Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL), and MEMS (Microelectromechanical Systems). Sayers was active professionally in and beyond N.C. State. He published more than 200 articles in journals such as Environmental Science and Technology, Journal of Applied Physics, Journal of Materials Research, Journal of Synchrotron Radiation, and Thin Solid Films. He was active in organizations such as International XAFS Society and the American Physical Society, was awarded a patent on his "Stable Silicide Electrical Contacts on Si" invention, presented invited talks and seminars at more than sixty national and international conferences, and served as a consultant for groups such as Mobil Research and Development. During his tenure at N.C. State, Sayers was involved in grant projects with institutions such as Exxon, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, the National Science Foundation, the Office of Naval Research, Procter & Gamble, the United States Department of Agriculture, the United States Department of Energy, and the University of Connecticut. Included in this collection are papers from Sayers' colleague Rodney McCormick, also of the NC State Physics Department. Dale Edward Sayers began his studies at the University of California at Berkeley, where he received his bachelor's degree in physics. He continued his studies at the University of Washington, where he completed his master's and doctoral degrees in physics. Sayers was named assistant professor of physics at North Carolina State University in 1976, associate professor in 1979, and professor in 1984. He served in that capacity until his death, November 25, 2004. Less

The Dan Sears Collection of Landscape Architecture and Greenways Projects, 1963-1999, documents the professional activities of landscape architect Dan Sears. The collection consists of proposals, project manuals, designs, development plans, and landscape architectural drawings created by Dan Sears and partnering architectural firms. Sears' projects include private residences, municipal buildings, public parks, and campuses. Sears Design Group was founded by Dan C.L. Sears, ASLA, in 1979. Over the years the firm has worked on projects largely in North Carolina but also in Georgia, Virginia, and even Wyoming. Sears Design Group has developed successful streetscapes for downtown areas as well as landscapes for private residences. In collaboration with Fitch Creations, Sears Design Group has provided landscape design and land use planning for the village of Fearrington in Chatham County, North Carolina. Dan C.L. Sears received the 2009 North Carolina Award from the North Carolina American Society of Landscape Architects at its meeting in 2009. Sears also worked with landscape architect Richard C. Bell; as a result, some of the same projects can be found in the Richard C. Bell Drawings and Other Material. Less

The Dan U. Gerstel Papers contains numerous scientific publications on a variety of topics related to the study of genetics, cytology, plant pathology, and crop science, collected by Dan U. Gerstel during his career as a member of the faculty of the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences of North Carolina State University and in the genetics department of the Weizmann Institute of Science (Mekhon Vaitsman le-mada) in Rehovot, Israel. The material is international in scope and covers a period of six decades. In addition to scientific publications, the collection contains personal and professional correspondence, a diary, genealogical research materials, newspaper clippings, and articles related to stamp collecting. Cytogeneticist Dan U. Gerstel, Ph.D., served as a professor of crop science at North Carolina State University, 1950-1980. He specialized in the study of tobacco and cotton. Less

The Daniel Harvey Hill Jr. (1859 - 1924) Papers, 1883 - 1955, contain items relating to Hill's career at North Carolina College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts (later North Carolina State University) as an English professor, Vice President, and President. Many of the materials document Hill's professional career, particularly his appointment to and resignation from the presidency of the College. There are also manuscript drafts of texts Hill wrote on the Civil War and on his father, General Daniel Harvey Hill. A small number of personal materials are also included. The bulk of the materials dates from 1908 to early 1920s. Daniel Harvey Hill Jr. (1859-1924) was an educator, college president, writer, and historian. He received a B.A., M.A. and Doctor of Literature degree from Davidson College. In 1908 he became the third president of the North Carolina College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts, where he served from 1908 to 1916. The D. H. Hill Library on the NC State campus was named for him. Less

Dr. David A. Jessup is a wildlife veterinarian who earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Zoology at the University of Washington in 1971. After receiving his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) from Washington State University veterinary school in 1976 and spending ten months in a pathology residency at the University of California-Davis, he was hired by the California Department of Fish and Game (CDFG) as its first wildlife veterinarian. He served CDFG in various capacities for more than 33 years, the last 15 in Santa Cruz, California, as Senior Wildlife Veterinarian and Supervisor of the Marine Wildlife Veterinary Care and Research Center. During his career he took time out to earn a Master's degree in Epidemiology and Preventive Medicine at U.C. Davis and get Board certified in Zoological Medicine. He retired from CDFG in November 2010 and was hired as the Executive Manager of the Wildlife Disease Association (WDA), an international non-profit scientific organization. The David A. Jessup Papers contain materials collected by David A. Jessup including oil spill response workbooks, materials from the Oiled Wildlife Care Network, manuals for rehabilitating oiled wildlife, laboratoring manuals, documents about the California-Nevada Section and related records.
