Big Little Books and Better Little Books published, 1933-1943, by Whitman Publishing Company of Racine, Wisconsin, and books of similar format published, 1934-1941, by the Saalfield Publishing Company, Engel-van Wiseman and Rand McNally. Charles G. Wright is Professor Emeritus of Entomology at North Carolina State University. Big Little Books were inexpensive children's books about 3 1/2" x 4 1/2" x 1 1/2" in size. They were first published in 1932 by Whitman Publishing Company of Racine, Wisconsin. There was a captioned picture opposite each page of text. Most of them were based on radio, comic strips, or motion pictures. The John Ptak Computer Science Book Collection contains pamphlets, reports, journal articles, correspondence, software and hardware documentation, and other written material as well as more than 500 monographs and serials which are individually cataloged. The individually cataloged items are identified in the NC State University Libraries catalog as part of the John Ptak Computer Science Book Collection; they are not included in this description. The collection dates range from 1891 to 1987, but the bullk of the material is from 1940-1965. The Scott Green Collection of Speculative Fiction contains magazines, fanzines, review publications, newsletters, and other publications containing or related to speculative fiction, especially science fiction, fantasy, and horror. Many professional authors are well represented in this collection, including Isaac Asimov, H. P. Lovecraft, Ray Bradbury, Evelyn E. Smith, and Arthur C. Clarke, among others. Also included in this collection is H. G. Wells's The Time Machine in its entirety (Famous Fantastic Mysteries Vol. 11, No. 6), and Isaac Asimov's story S as in Zebatinsky, considered by some to be Asimov's finest intellectual effort (Star Science Fiction). Poet and journalist Scott E. Green has been an active writer in a number of fields, including poetry, in the science fiction, fantasy, and horror genres. Green’s publications include his Contemporary Science Fiction, Fantasy, and Horror Poetry: A Resource Guide and Biographical Directory and Isaac Asimov: An Annotated Bibliography of the Asimov Collection at Boston University.
