The A. C. Barefoot Papers consist of professional publications and correspondence, academic and adminstrative papers, computer cards and diskettes, fossils, forestry study video cassette tapes, and computer generated dendrochronological statistical studies conducted by Aldos Cortez Barefoot during his tenure with the Department of Wood and Paper Science at North Carolina State College (later North Carolina State University). A. C. (Aldos Cortez) Barefoot earned his Bachelors and Masters degrees in wood technology from North Carolina State College in the late 1940s, and then received a doctorate from Duke University in 1958 for his research on the manufacture of plywood. Though Barefoot's career often took him overseas for extended periods of time, he remained a member of the faculty at North Carolina State. In 1962, Barefoot was named an Associate Professor, he was promoted to Professor in 1968, and in 1975, Barefoot was named Head of the University Studies Division at North Carolina State University. The Benjamin Warfield Smith Papers are primarily made up of correspondence between Smith and various parties written during the first ten years (1939 to 1949) of Smith's tenure as professor of agronomy at North Carolina State College of Agriculture and Engineering (later North Carolina State University). The majority of the letters are written to or from the various professional organizations Smith was part of: the American Genetic Association, the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the Botanical Society of America, the Genetics Society of America, the North Carolina Academy of Science, the Raleigh Natural History Club, Sigma Xi, and the Virginia Academy of Science. Also included is correspondence with the National Roster of Scientific and Specialized Personnel and the United States War Manpower Commission, regarding Smith's Selective Service status during World War II. Benjamin Warfield Smith (1913-1981) taught botany and genetics in the Agronomy Department of North Carolina State University from 1939 to 1978. He received his B.S. in 1934 and M.S. in 1936 from the University of Virginia and his Ph.D. in 1939 from the University of Wisconsin. The collection contains two commissions presented to Harlan Craig Brown for the ranks of Captain and Major in the United States Army Officers' Reserve Corps, in 1952 and 1953, respectively. Also included are typescripts of speeches by Brown, personal correspondence, militray medals and cards, and class reunion letter and photographs. Harlan Brown began his career at the NC State University library in 1936, where he later served as Libraries Director. From 1942 to 1946, Brown took a leave of absence to serve in World War II as an officer. This collection contains materials related to Levine's research interests, as well as those documenting his publications and university career. Correspondence includes letters about general cryptography, articles written by Levine and others, Levine's cryptographic patents book, and cryptographic computer tests. Research contains notes, computer printouts, article reprints, and note cards related to Levine's research interests in cryptography. Writings includes Levine's published and unpublished essays and pamphlets. Teaching Career includes class notes and other student-related material. Collected Works includes articles, books, and bibliographic information of other authors in the fields of mathematics and cryptography. Unprocessed Material contains copies of articles and publications on cryptography. Most of the materials are from Levine's lifetime, but some of the items in the Collected Works series are from as early as 1716. The Jack Levine Papers documents Levine's career as a crytographic researcher and mathematics professor at North Carolina State College (later North Carolina State University) from 1936 to 1995. The collection contains information on Levine's research, writings, university career, and correspondence. His main interests were tensor analysis, geometrics of generalized spaces, differential geometry, combinatorial analysis, theory of symmetric functions, algebraic cryptography and mathematical physics. The John M. Riddle microfilm and papers include Professor Riddle's research materials from the 1960s to the present. The majority of these materials are microfilms of ancient lapidary texts produced by university libraries and museums from various parts of the world. John M. Riddle (1937- ) is a historian specializing in the history of medicine who received his B.A. at Lenoir Rhyne College and his M.A. and doctorate degree at University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill. The John William Harrelson Papers contain correspondence, speeches and writings, reports, minutes, clippings, certificates, scrapbooks, financial records, and photographs. The collection provides information about Harrelson's military career, 1917-1919; his tenure as a faculty member and administrator at North Carolina State College (later North Carolina State University), 1919-1929 and 1933-1953; and his service as director of the North Carolina Department of Conservation and Development, 1929-1933. The materials also relate to Harrelson's membership in various civic and professional organizations. Materials range in date from 1908 to 1955. The Joshua Plummer Pillsbury Papers consist of the 9-page Professional Training in Landscape Architecture (1945 September 17) and the 31-page Professional Training for Landscape Architecture: Some Autobiographical Notes by J. P. Pillsbury (1945 October 11). Joshua Plummer Pillsbury was a professor of horticulture (1911 - 1940), professor of landscape architecture (1940 - 1946), and the landscape architect (1925 - 1946) at North Carolina State College of Agriculture and Engineering (now North Carolina State University). Pillsbury received his bachelor's degree from Pennsylvania State College (1910), where he served as a horticulture assistant from 1898 to 1911. Less

Records of the North Carolina State University Faculty Committee on Student Government range from 1927 to 1958, although records from the 1920s are limited to a Tau Beta Pi council bulletin and a booklet on codes of conduct at North Carolina State College (later North Carolina State University). The bulk of the collection is from the mid 1940s-1950s. Included are some documents sent from the student council to the faculty, student council booklets delineating the rules of student conduct and the punishments for failing to follow said rules. Also included is information on the adoption of the honor system at North Carolina State College and inquiries from other universities interested in the newly adopted policy. William Norwood Hicks, the first head of the NC State College Department of Philosophy and Religion and a student leader during his time at State College figures prominently in this collection. A second box includes portfolios containing information on the evolution and development of the campus government and honor system, as well as drafts of the constitution and by-laws proposed by the organization. Student government began at North Carolina State College in 1921 on October 15th. The student government worked in tandem with elected faculty members as part of the campus government. Later, it seems that a separate student government, including a student body president and governing committees was formed. The Faculty Committee on Student Government appears to be a means of including faculty involvement and input in the governance of the student body by its peers. Many of the records regard the establishment and use of the honor system in relation to student government, a then-innovative plan that seems to have been emulated by other universities. Rules regarding academic honesty and proper student behavior were primary concerns of the student government and had particular relevance for educators at the University. Included in the records are booklets outlining the rules, both proposed and in place, governing the student body, as well as notes on various documents made by faculty members, and documents relating to the student council. The records of the North Carolina State University Faculty Orientation and Hospitality Committee span from 1955 to 1992. The collection contains information pertaining to new faculty orientation at North Carolina State University (formerly North Carolina State College), including packets of information sent out to new faculty previous to orientation, evaluations of the orientaton event, intra-university correspondence regarding the orientation event, and other related documents. The faculty orientation packets contain a wide variety of information, including: information pertaining to the North Carolina State Woman's Club, the University Club (previously, the Faculty Family Recreation Center), tourist information regarding Raleigh and North Carolina, and items of faculty interest, ranging from retirement information to athletic events schedules. The records contain only one document after 1981, which is dated 1992. The North Carolina State University Faculty Orientation and Hospitality Committee existed in or before 1955. (North Carolina State University was previously referred to as North Carolina State College.) The purpose of the Faculty Orientation and Hospitality Committee was to organize and host an annual orientation event for new faculty and to provide the new faculty and their families with information that would make their transition to the Raleigh area as welcoming as possible. New Faculty Orientation is still an event at North Carolina State University and packets are still provided to faculty prior to this event. New Faculty Orientation is currently (2012) sponsored by the Office of the Provost and administered through the North Carolina State Faculty Center for Teaching and Learning, which, apparently, handles new faculty affairs. The records of the North Carolina State University (earlier North Carolina State College) Committee on Patents and Inventions are dated from 1940 to the 1970s. The Committee was appointed by the North Carolina State College Dean of Administration, Colonel J. W. Harrelson. The committee members were faculty of North Carolina State College. The records include patent policy and procedures, patent and invention disclosures, agenda, minute and meeting notes, annual reports, examples of patent and invention diagrams, Invention management brochures and articles of incorporation of the North Carolina State College Research Foundation. In 1940 Colonel J. W. Harrelson, Dean of Administration of North Carolina State College (later University), appointed a committee of faculty members to make recommendations on institutional policy governing patents and inventions developed in the laboratories of the college and to prepare papers, by-laws and other documents necessary for the establishment of a research foundation at the college. The name of the corporation was the North Carolina State College Research Foundation. The purpose of the corporation was to promote educational objectives by encouraging, fostering and conducting scientific investigations and industrial research and by training and developing persons for the conduct of such investigations and research. The Patent and Invention Committee was also responsible for reviewing patent applications and patent disclosures and for issuing patents to corporations or individuals. Less

The Faculty Senate General Records contain files of all administrative aspects of the Faculty Senate. The bulk of the records come from different committees and include materials on honorary degrees, the search for a new chancellor, Board of Trustees, Chancellor's Liasion, elections, budget, and student affairs. Also included are materials on the selection of outstanding teachers and Watauga Medal recepients, retention of African American students, Founders Day events, and other administrative functions of the Faculty Senate. The first Faculty Council meetings were held in 1923, and the Council remained in place as an ad hoc advisory board to the then College President. At one point in time this faculty group may have also been called the Advisory Committee of the General Faculty. In 1954, the Faculty Senate was organized to replace the old Faculty Council. Less

Preston William Edsall (1902-1972) was Professor of Political Science at North Carolina State College (later North Carolina State University) from 1947 to 1967, and head of the Department of History and Politics from 1948 to 1967.
