While the bulk of the material is in English, a substantial number of items, including a portion of the correspondence, diaries, and writings, are in German. This collection documents the professional and personal activities of Dr. Carl Alwin Schenck. These activities include his work at the Biltmore Estate and Forest and logging operations throughout Europe and the United States. In addition, this collection also provides significant information on the Biltmore Forest School and its students. Carl Alwin Schenck (March 25, 1868–May 17, 1955) was a forester and pioneering forestry educator in North America. Schenck was known for his contributions as the forester for George W. Vanderbilt's Biltmore Estate and as the founder of the Biltmore Forest School, the first forestry school in the United States, in 1898. After the Biltmore Forestry School closed in 1913 Schenck returned to Germany and served in the German army during World War I. After the war, Schenck spent most of the 1920s and 1930s travelling across Europe and the United States giving tours and lectures to forestry students. Edward Lamar Cloyd entered the Agricultural and Mechanical College in Raleigh (later North Carolina State University) in 1910 and received a Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering degree in 1915. In 1918, Cloyd began his career with North Carolina State College as an instructor of mechanical drawing, and became the Dean of Students in 1921. The Henry Knox McIntyre Papers, 1905-1913, consist of one diary, two household account books, and a bound notebook containing an inventory of household items with values, from a faculty member at North Carolina College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts (later North Carolina State University). Henry Knox McIntyre received his bachelor's degree in electrical engineering in 1899 from Columbia University. He joined the faculty of the North Carolina College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts (later North Carolina State University) as an Assistant Professor of Physics and Electrical Engineering in 1910, and served in varying professorships through 1926. Browder Collection of Cryptography Manuals and William Thomas Prestwood Diaries, includes twenty-eight original Prestwood diaries, most of which are encrypted, and enlarged copies of several of the diaries. Also included are a copy of The Enciphered Diary of William Thomas Prestwood 1808-1859, a description and transcription of the diaries produced by Nathaniel Browder, and two of Browder's World War II-era cryptography manuals. Nathaniel C. Browder worked as a cryptographer during and after World War II. After his retirement he worked on a number of genealogical and local history projects. Among these projects was the researching, deciphering, transcribing, and editing of William Thomas Prestwood's diaries. William Thomas Prestwood, a descendant of the influential Coker family, wrote a ciphered diary from 1808 until his death in 1859. Less

The Theodore B. Mitchell Papers consists of correspondence, research notes, glass plate lantern slides, and newspaper clippings pertaining to Theodore B. Mitchell's career and his research on "systematic entomology," and in particular his study of bees (which culminated in the publication of the two-volume Bees of the Eastern United States). The Professional Correspondence series contains letters to colleagues in the field of entomology and includes, among others, letters to and from the British Museum of Natural History, the California Academy of Sciences, the Philadelphia Academy of Natural Sciences, the Rockefeller Foundation, and the College of Tropical Agriculture.
