Cannon family of Marion, McDowell County, North Carolina. Family members include William F. Cannon, Peter F. Cannon, and Julius A. Cannon. The 1870, 1880, 1900, and 1910 United States censuses all list a Cannon family in McDowell County, and it is possible that it is the one this material corresponds to. The Cannon Family Papers contain account books, a scrapbook, papers from the North Carolina Agricultural Extension Service, tax records, a mathematics practice notebook, an owner's manual for a mower, and clippings of advertisements. The materials belonged to William F. Cannon, Peter F. Cannon, Julius A. Cannon, and other members of the Cannon family. They range in date from approximately 1839 to 1951. Less

The Dale E. Sayers papers document Sayers' career as a researcher and educator, from his work as an undergraduate at the University of California at Berkeley to his teaching and research career as a professor of physics at North Carolina State University. Sayers was a co-developer of the modern extended x-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) technique, which, according to Sayers, "allows atomic structural information to be determined in complex systems." In addition to EXAFS, his research interests included x-ray absorption spectroscopy, amorphous materials, mammography technology, synchrotron radiation, and environmental science. Sayers' extensive planning work on the NC STAR Storage Ring Project (North Carolina Storage Rings for Advanced Research) is one of the main subjects documented here. Other research project files included in these papers are Joint Economic Development Initiative - Advanced Light Technologies (JEDI-ALT) and the Department of Defense's Technology Reinvestment Project (TRP). These research files also include information on Sayers involvement in projects with the National Synchrotron Light Source (NSLS), the Advanced Light Source (ALS), the Canadian Light Source (CLS), Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL), and MEMS (Microelectromechanical Systems). Sayers was active professionally in and beyond N.C. State. He published more than 200 articles in journals such as Environmental Science and Technology, Journal of Applied Physics, Journal of Materials Research, Journal of Synchrotron Radiation, and Thin Solid Films. He was active in organizations such as International XAFS Society and the American Physical Society, was awarded a patent on his "Stable Silicide Electrical Contacts on Si" invention, presented invited talks and seminars at more than sixty national and international conferences, and served as a consultant for groups such as Mobil Research and Development. During his tenure at N.C. State, Sayers was involved in grant projects with institutions such as Exxon, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, the National Science Foundation, the Office of Naval Research, Procter & Gamble, the United States Department of Agriculture, the United States Department of Energy, and the University of Connecticut. Included in this collection are papers from Sayers' colleague Rodney McCormick, also of the NC State Physics Department. Dale Edward Sayers began his studies at the University of California at Berkeley, where he received his bachelor's degree in physics. He continued his studies at the University of Washington, where he completed his master's and doctoral degrees in physics. Sayers was named assistant professor of physics at North Carolina State University in 1976, associate professor in 1979, and professor in 1984. The Donald E. Moreland Papers consist of presentations, reprints, faculty activity reports, visual aids, project descriptions, lecture notes, and laboratory procedures related to crop science, botany, toxicology, and plant physiology. Major topics include microsomes, plant and rat liver mitochondria, and herbicides. Moreland presented many of the materials at conferences, including conferences of the Weed Science Society of America. North Carolina State University Professor Emeritus Donald E. Moreland (1919-2010) served as a faculty member at North Carolina State for more than fifty years, teaching crop science, botany, forestry, and toxicology. There is also information about Hostetler's numerous religious, civic and political activities, as well as biographical information on the Hostetler family and a collection of photographs. The Elliot Brown Grover reports and patent contain Grover and C. J. Hall's 1928 thesis, Construction and Improvement of Thickness Gauge for Textiles; Malcolm E. Campbell's 1933 report for the United States Department of Agriculture, Spinning Tests of Selected Bales of Sea Island, American-Egyptian, and Egyptian-Sakellaridis Cotton: A Preliminary Report; and Grover's 1943 patent for an apparatus to test the density of thread packages. Massachusetts native Elliot Brown Grover (1906 - 1997) joined the North Carolina State College (now North Carolina State University) faculty in 1944 as the head of the Yarn Manufacturing Department in the School of Textiles. In 1959, School of Textiles Head Malcolm E. Campbell appointed Grover the head of the school's new Department of Textile Technology. Grover received an honorary fellowship from the Textile Institute in Manchester, England, the organization's highest honor, in 1962. He authored numerous publications, including the Handbook of Textile Testing and Quality Control (1960). He was active in numerous professional organizations, including Sigma Xi and the American Society of Mechanical Engineers. Grover retired from the university in 1966. Less

Ernest L. Gooden (1903-1970) was born in Elizabethtown, North Carolina. Gooden graduated from Duke University, and taught at Glen Alpine High School in Glen Alpine, North Carolina, from 1927 to 1930. He joined the U.S. Department of Agriculture as an assistant scientific aide in September of 1930. Gooden had a 40-year career as a physicist with the USDA and specialized in pesticides. The Ernest L. Gooden Papers consists of materials documenting Gooden's career with the United States Department of Agriculture, Agricultural Research Service. Drafts and manuscripts of articles by Gooden include "Report of Physical Properties of Pesticides" and "Optical Crystallographic Properties of DDT." Research files contain notes, graphs, charts, and articles with labels like "Viscosity," "Zinc Arsenate," "Sodium Arsenite," and "Rotenone." This collection also contains electron microscope micrographs, patents and patent applications by Gooden, and hundreds of 3 x 5" x-ray diffraction data cards published by the Joint Committee on Chemical Analysis by X-Ray Diffraction Methods. These x-ray diffraction cards contain notes, calculations, and authors and their publications. Also included in this collection are glass slides, photos and negatives of electron microscope images, approximately a thousand 3 x 4" cards of chemical compounds and other notes, and materials from the annual meetings of the Electron Microscopy Society of America from 1949 to 1966. The Frederick L. Wellman Papers contain items relating to Wellman's plant pathology research. The collection includes correspondence, reports, publications, newspaper articles, manuscript materials, and photographs detailing Wellman's work on Fusarium and coffee rust disease (Hemileia vastatrix). Items in this collection date from 1915 to 1981, with the bulk of the materials dating from the 1950s to the early 1970s. Frederick Lovejoy Wellman (1897-1994) was a plant pathologist most known for his reasearch on coffee rust disease (Hemileia vastatrix). The records of the Office of the Associate Dean and Director of the North Carolina Agricultural Research Service contain reports, correspondence, programs, publications, speeches, minutes, financial information, and committees relating to agricultural research and experiment stations. Also included are materials on the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), the Fiftieth Anniversary of the research stations, the Tennessee Valley Authority, agricultural products, the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, individual college departments and their role in experiment station research, and the National Pickle Packers Association. Records include a letter book of the director. Materials range in date from 1878 to present. The North Carolina Agricultural Experiment Station was created in 1877, and transferred from the State of North Carolina to the North Carolina College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts (later, North Carolina State University) in 1889. The Station was jointly run by the two groups, and became a source of contention between the State Department of Agriculture and the University through the early part of the twentieth century. Contains records that document the administration, research, and educational work of the Department of Forestry, and seven series: Subject Files, Cooperatives, Outreach, Extension, and Continuing Education, Extension Forestry, Extension Wildlife, Unprocessed Materials, Audiovisual Materials, and Web Content. Also contains correspondence, training materials, and reports pertaining to timber estimates which were used for identifying and grading timber for logging. Also includes conferences on opportunities for the use of laminated wood in building construction, annual reports on farm forestry extension work (tree farming), and Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) Unit Demonstration Tracts relating to farm woodland management plans of the North Carolina Christmas Tree Program. The collection is unprocessed. The Department of Forestry began in 1929 and its first director was J.V. Hofmann who served until 1948. In 1951 T. Ewald Maki was appointed to head up the forest management curriculum. He served until 1970 when C.B. Davey was appointed department head. Davey led the department until 1978 when John W. Johnson succeeded him. Following Johnson's death in late 1979, Art Cooper became department head and remained in that capacity until 1994. Less
