The Cyrus B. King Papers contain correspondence, political campaign materials, newsletters from a variety of local and national organizations, flyers, clippings, membership rosters, fundraising information, invitations, precinct maps, journal articles, newspaper editorials, and reports and resolutions on political issues. The majority of the material was generated through Cyrus King's work to promote civil rights and racial justice and his work on political campaigns. Correspondence includes letters to and from political figures. There are also documents that relate to his time as a librarian at North Carolina State University and a small amount of personal correspondence. Materials range in date from 1932 to 2014, with the majority dated after 1980. Cyrus Baldwin King (1922-2014), worked in the North Carolina State University Libraries for over twenty years and was active in a wide variety of efforts to promote civil rights and social justice. He was hired by N.C. State as an acquisitions librarian in 1963 and retired in 1984 as Assistant Director for Collection Management and Development. He was very politically active, writing tirelessly in support of the causes that he has adopted, most notably racial justice, campaigns to promote peace and non-violence, and other civil rights causes. This collection of oral histories contains audiocassette tapes, 2003-2004, of interviews with GI Bill veterans who attended North Carolina State College (later North Carolina State University). The interviewees were twelve servicemen and -women who were in the armed forces during World War II, the Korean War and Vietnam War eras, and later. The interviews cover the subjects' military service, educational experiences, GI Bill benefits, and professional careers. Also included for some interviews are tape logs--typed partial transcripts with abridged or paraphrased questions and answers, along with tape counter numbers. Interviews were conducted by Anna Dahlstein, NC State University Libraries Fellow, and Robert Serow, Professor, Education Research, College of Education, North Carolina State University. The interviews in the GI Bill Oral Histories were conducted in conjunction with Transforming Society: The GI Bill Experience at NC State, an exhibit prepared by the North Carolina State University Libraries to celebrate the sixtieth anniversary of the original GI Bill of Rights, the Servicemen's Readjustment Act of 1944, and to honor those whom the legislation and its subsequent reenactments enabled to attend the university. The collection consists of mounted photographs and various artifacts brought together for the 2001 North Carolina State University exhibit "The Sodfather: A Friend of Agriculture in North Carolina" highlighting the career of James A. Graham (1921- ), who was North Carolina Commissioner of Agriculture from 1964 until 2000. James A. Graham served as the North Carolina Commissioner of Agriculture from 1964 until 2000. In this capacity, he emerged as a national figure, holding the presidency at various times of the National Association of State Departments of Agriculture, the Southern Association of State Departments of Agriculture, and the Southern United States Trade Association. The NC State University Libraries Oral Histories about the James B. Hunt Jr. Library (2008-2015) contains oral history interviews on the design and construction of the Hunt Library. The people interviewed were staff from the NC State University Libraries, the University Architect from NC State University, and designers from the architectural firms. NC State University Libraries Special Collections Research Center staff conducted the interviews. Interviews conducted in 2008 and 2009 exist only in audio format (WAV); those from 2015 in video and audio formats (MOV and WAV). Written transcripts (PDF format) also exist for these interviews. The first library at North Carolina State University was established in 1889 in a room in Holladay Hall. In 1925 a new purpose-built library building was constructed (now Brooks Hall). In 1954 the current D.H. Hill Library building was opened (originally just the east wing of the current structure). The library space was expanded in 1971 by building an 11-story book tower and connecting the original space with the former student union (now the Erdahl-Cloyd or west wing). Further expansion and renovation occurred in the 1980s, culminating in 1990 with the opening of the second (or "south") bookstack tower. In 2013 the award-winning James B. Hunt Library opened on the university’s Centennial Campus. In 2016, NC State University Libraries won the National Medal for Museum and Library Service, bestowed by the Institute for Museum and Library Service. The medal was presented by First Lady Michelle Obama to Director Susan Nutter during a ceremony. Susan Nutter retired from the Libraries in 2017, after an esteemed 30 year tenure. Less

The North Carolina State University Libraries Staff Association is charged with promoting the welfare of its members through social and educational activities, to provide a means of expressing staff opinions, and to promote high standards in library service. These records contain files pertaining to the activities and administration of the North Carolina State University Burlington Textiles Library including correspondence and reference files kept by the library, clippings, brochures, and other information about topics related to the College of Textiles. They also include slide sets, a portrait of Wallace W. Riddick, Jr., the Dedication Plaque for the Burlington Textiles Library, the Quick Response Collection, Textile World Charts, and panels from past exhibits. Materials range in date from 1911 to 2010. From 1988 to 2013, the Burlington Textiles Library was located in room 4411 of the College of Textiles complex on the Centennial Campus at North Carolina State University. The Library provided services to the faculty and staff, students, and NC State Centennial Campus community and university affiliates. The Library supported the curriculum and research programs in textile chemistry, textile materials and management, and fiber and polymer science. The North Carolina State University Libraries, Collection Management Department Records contain bound and unbound lists of titles and binders of statistics on library holdings. The Collection Management Department built and managed the NC State University Libraries' collections in support of campus research and instructional needs. Among the department's responsibilities were selecting books, journals, electronic resources, and media; developing collection policies; and reporting collections data for reviews and accreditation. In 2016, Collection Management merged with Research and Information Services to become Collections and Research Strategy. Less

The records also include those of the Long Range Planning Committee, the Centennial Celebration Committee, and the Commission on the State of the Library. The majority of these records belonged to Jinnie Davis who retired in 2001 after twenty-one years of working for the Libraries. The North Carolina State University Libraries Administration carries out the library's mission by planning, organizing, directing, and promoting activities and operations in public service; by managing, organizing, and preserving collections; by recruiting, retaining, and developing personnel; by fundraising and reseraching; and through technology support, budget and finance, facilities, and public relations. This collection contains the records from the North Carolina State University Libraries' preservation activities. The major issues addressed were mold, stolen pages/materials, water damage, disaster planning, the preservation of the school newspaper, The Technician, and acid-free paper printing. The collection includes memos, letters, meeting minutes and agendas, handwritten notes, supplemental information, pamphlets and other miscellaneous materials including a list from 1968 of stolen and missing materials. In 1982 a Preservation Committee was established within the North Carolina State University's libraries. The Committee had a last meeting on 25 October 1988, wrote a report addressing concerns, and subsequently disbanded. A new structure, the Preservation Department, emerged shortly thereafter with subcommittees such as Preservation Education and Disaster Planning. The Preservation Department's stated mission is to maintain and preserve collections and the information they contain in viable and accessible formats. Less
