Contained in this collection is a photographic reproduction of a color portrait of Eliza Elliott Lindsey Baucom. Also included is a copy of a 1965 newspaper article in which Baucom describes her early life, including her students days at NC State. The Cathy Sterling Papers include correspondence, texts of speeches, reports, clippings, photographs, and artifacts relating to Cathy Sterling's tenure, 1970-1971, as Student Body President at North Carolina State University. Many of the materials focus on Sterling's status as North Carolina State University's first female student body president, as well as her involvement in protest movements against the Vietnam War, which included organizing a campus Peace Retreat. The materials range in date from 1966 to 1999, with the bulk of the materials being from 1970 to 1972. Cathy (now known as Kate) Sterling served as the first female student body president at North Carolina State University, 1970-1971. She conducted a successful write-in campaign with a platform that focused on students’ rights and the administration’s use of student fees. In the Spring of 1970, Sterling married Gene Messick, a graduate of the School (now College) of Design at NC State and director of the multimedia program at Stewart Theatre. Soon after, Messick accepted a teaching position at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York, and Sterling moved to Ithaca to join him after the conclusion of her term as Student Body President. However, Sterling remained active in NC State’s Student Government activities throughout the 1971-1972 academic year. Sterling later returned to NC State, where she graduated in 1977 with a Bachelor of Science degree in vocational industrial education. Less

This collection contains two report cards for Frank Newton Phillips, Jr., for the academic year 1936-1937. Frank Newton Phillips, Jr., was an civil engineering student at North Carolina State College. He graduated with a bachelor of science degree in 1937. He remained in North Carolina, and during his career he worked on projects for Piedmont Natural Gas, Colonial Pipeline, and the Greensboro airport. He died in 2010 at age 94. Less

The College of Natural Resources photographs include portraits and candid shots of students and faculty in classes, labs, and outdoor settings. Prominent faculty members pictured include Carl Alwin Schenck, Richard J. Preston, and Clarence E. Libby. Photographs of meetings, conferences, events, and awards receptions are included. This collection also contains images of the buildings, laboratories, and equipment associated with the College of Natural Resources. Although the majority of the photographs are undated, these photographs range approximately from the late 1930s to the late 1990s; most are from the 1950s to the 1970s. The majority of these photographs are black and white. In 1929, North Carolina State College formally established the Department of Forestry. In 1931, the Department of Forestry was renamed the Division of Forestry, and in 1950, the Division of Forestry was elevated to School status and renamed the School of Forestry. The School of Forestry became the School of Forest Resources in 1968, and the College of Forest Resources in 1987. Finally, in 2000, the College of Forest Resources assumed its present name, the College of Natural Resources. As of 2010, the College of Natural Resources includes the Department of Forestry and Environmental Resources, the Department of Parks, Recreation and Tourism Management, and the Department of Wood and Paper Science. This collection contains approximately twenty photographs and a laboratory workbook of W. E. Wilson for an electrical engineering class. The photographs (all black-and-white) include portraits of H. K. Plott and W. E. Wilson, both NC State students. There are several snapshots of college age men and women, probably fellow students at NC State as well as students other nearby colleges. There are a couple photographs of the Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity house. None of the materials are dated, but they appear to have been created during the 1920s. Westray (or Westry) Edwin Wilson, also known at "W.E.," was a student at North Carolina State College (later University). He was originally from Asheville, North Carolina. He received a BS in electrical engineering from NC State in 1927. After graduating from college, Wilson served in the U.S. Army, attaining the rank of colonel. He retired to Clearwater, Florida, and passed away in the 1980s or early 1990s. Less
