This collection of oral histories contains audiocassette tapes, 2003-2004, of interviews with GI Bill veterans who attended North Carolina State College (later North Carolina State University). The interviewees were twelve servicemen and -women who were in the armed forces during World War II, the Korean War and Vietnam War eras, and later. The interviews cover the subjects' military service, educational experiences, GI Bill benefits, and professional careers. Also included for some interviews are tape logs--typed partial transcripts with abridged or paraphrased questions and answers, along with tape counter numbers. Interviews were conducted by Anna Dahlstein, NC State University Libraries Fellow, and Robert Serow, Professor, Education Research, College of Education, North Carolina State University. The interviews in the GI Bill Oral Histories were conducted in conjunction with Transforming Society: The GI Bill Experience at NC State, an exhibit prepared by the North Carolina State University Libraries to celebrate the sixtieth anniversary of the original GI Bill of Rights, the Servicemen's Readjustment Act of 1944, and to honor those whom the legislation and its subsequent reenactments enabled to attend the university. The Mary Yarbrough Papers (circa 1850-2005) contain 24.5 linear feet of correspondence, photographs, publications, music books, news clippings, photocopies, and artifacts. Most of these materials document Yarbrough's life and career, as well as her family history. Mary Elizabeth Yarbrough (1904-1984) was one of the first women to receive a graduate degree (M.S. in chemistry, 1927) from North Carolina State College (later North Carolina State University). Mary Yarbrough served on the faculty of Meredith College for many years (1929-1972). In 1941 she received a Ph.D. and Phi Beta Kappa key at Duke University. At Meredith College she headed the chemistry and physics department, and she became an assistant director of the cooperative education program. Less

The North Carolina State University, Division of Student Affairs, Associate Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs Records contain correspondence, reports, memoranda, committee meeting notes, and artifacts from Evelyn Q. Reiman, former Associate Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs. These materials range in date from 1955 to 2012. The North Carolina State University, Division of Student Affairs, Associate Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs Office under Evelyn Reiman included Multicultural Student Affairs, Campus Activities, Student Conduct, the Center for Student Leadership, Ethics, and Public Service (CSLEPS), the Women's Center, and Business and Planning for University Student Centers. The GLBT Center, Parents and Family Services, the Student Organization Resource Center, and the Union Activities Board comprised Campus Activities. The Chaplains' Cooperative Ministry, Student Government, and Student Media also fell under Associate Vice Chancellor Reiman's purview. Multicultural Student Affairs, the GLBT Center, the Women's Center, CSLEPS, and Parent and Family Services were all founded during Reiman's tenure, providing a much-needed emphasis on diversity, ethics, and public service.Student Affairs' mission statement was to provide "programs and services for students and the larger community to enhance quality of life, facilitate intellectual, ethical and personal growth, and create a culture which engenders respect for human diversity." The North Carolina State University, Division of Student Affairs, Student Media Authority Records contain budget and financial statements, contracts, correspondence, minutes, staff applications, layout and design information, and publications. There is also a large amount of photographic materials, including CDs, DVDs, photographic prints, negatives, contact sheets, and slides, most of which are from student photographers. The collection includes records of the Student Media Board, 1928-2008, the Agromeck office from 1909 to 2011, the Technician office from 1939 to 2011, the WKNC Radio Station from 1922 to 2006, the Windhover from 1928 to 2013, the Nubian Message from 2007 to 2009, and a small number of records, 1926-2020, from other publications. The Student Media Authority at North Carolina State University oversees creation of campus student publications at North Carolina State University, which include a yearbook, a daily newspaper, literary magazine, and African American student newspaper. It also oversees the student radio station, WKNC, and student television station, Wolf TV. The Publications Board was formed at North Carolina State College in or before 1933 to oversee creation of student publications. By 1937, it included representatives from student publications such as the Agromeck, Technician, Wataugan, Southern Engineer, and Agriculturist. By the late 1940s, it also included representatives from the student radio station WVWP. In the following decades, the organization continued to oversee the finances and leadership of student publications at North Carolina State University. It underwent various name changes, becoming known as the Student Media Board by the mid-2000s. As of 2010, Student Media is part of the Division of Student Affairs and is based in Witherspoon Student Center. It includes 220 paid and volunteer student positions. Less

The records of the North Carolina State University Office of the Vice-Chancellor of Student Affairs, 1889-2008, contain correspondence, reports, and memoranda pertaining to student life on campus including admissions, financial aid, residence life, counseling, student conduct, arts organizations, Greek organizations, housing and residence life, and the administration of student organizations. Records include files from the Associate Vice Chancellor's office, Alumni Association, Athletics, Financial Aid, and Student Government. The Division of Student Affairs at North Carolina State University provided programs and services for students and the larger community to enhance quality of life, facilitate intellectual, ethical and personal growth, and create a culture which engenders respect for human diversity. Through these activities the Division of Student Affairs support student learning with the principle of “Students First.” In 2011, the Division of Student Affairs merged with the Division of Undergraduate Academic Programs to become the Division of Academic and Student Affairs (DASA). The records of the Iota Lambda (North Carolina State University) Chapter of the Alpha Phi Omega National Service Fraternity (APO) contain the charter to establish the Iota Lambda Chapter, chapter meeting minutes, publications, the constitution and by-laws, membership rosters, scrapbooks, photo composites of members, and other general information on the chapter. Members of the chapter volunteer to provide service and promote tolerance in the community. The Iota Lambda Chapter was established in November of 1950. Alpha Phi Omega is a national service co-ed fraternity whose mission is to create campus and community leaders through service. The records of the North Carolina Chapter (NC State's chapter) of Alpha Zeta include correspondence, meeting minutes, financial information, membership records, the chapter's history, scrapbooks created by the chapter, and other files documenting the chapter, its members, and its activities. This collection also includes a number of publications produced and distributed by the national office of Alpha Zeta. Alpha Zeta was founded at Ohio State University in 1897 as an honorary professional society for students and industry professionals in the agriculture and natural resources fields. The American Institute of Chemical Engineers was formed in 1908, and has since become the world's leading organization for chemical engineering professionals. A student chapter of the organization was established at NC State in 1930, and is still active as of 2008. Less

The records of the North Carolina State University Engineers' Council contain administrative records (including meeting minutes, officer and committee files, financial records, their constitution, membership information, and other general records), records from events and activities the Council hosted, files from their involvement with the Order of St. Patrick engineering honorary society, production and publications files (including photographic files) for their publication, the NC State Engineer (and its predecessor, the Southern Engineer), and other general information about the Council, its members, and its activities. It also includes the official website of the Engineers' Council, beginning in 2020. Materials range in date from 1926 to 2020. The purpose of the Engineers' Council was to provide a unified student voice within the School of Engineering, while also promoting the study and practice of the various disciplines in engineering. While the records of the Engineers' Council do not indicate gaps in the Councils' activity, the Council may have disbanded at some point and reformed in 1987, according to their website in 2008. The records of Eta Kappa Nu, Beta Eta Chapter (North Carolina State University's chapter) contain the petition to form the chapter, membership rosters, meeting minutes, roll calls, and a history of the chapter. Materials range in date from 1938 to 2005. Eta Kappa Nu is a national honorary society for electrical engineers. The faculty of the electrial engineering department at NC State met in 1937 to discuss the possibility of establishing a chapter of Eta Kappa Nu, which they applied for and were granted in the following year (1938). The records of the Golden Chain Honor Society include their constitution, meeting minutes, member and recepient rosters, correspondence, financial information, induction banquet programs, yearbooks, and other general information about the society. The Golden Chain Honor Society was begun after a student wrote an article in the Technician, proposing the idea of forming an honor society exclusive to NC State which would recognize several seniors who had excelled academically as students during their time at the university, but who had also demonstrated leadership and service to the university and in the community. The Golden Chain Honor Society was formed in 1926, and 12 senior students were selected to be the first members of the "golden chain" of exceptional NC State students. Thereafter, up to 12 rising seniors were selected in the spring of their junior year to form the next "links" in the "golden chain," and were recognized at a "tapping" ceremony at the end of their junior year. The Golden Chain Honor Society remained active as of 2008, at that time having just shy of 900 members ("links") in the Chain. Less

The records of the North Carolina State University Chapter of the Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi contain information on NC State's chapter, as well as information produced or distributed by the national office of Phi Kappa Phi. NC State's chapter records contain their constitution and bylaws, correspondence, meeting minutes, membership lists, financial information, information on officers, awards, activities, chapter history, and other general records of the chapter. The records from the National Office of Phi Kappa Phi are comprised mostly of publications, and also include official handbooks, constitution and bylaws, brochures, and other literature produced by the national office for distribution to all chapters; as well as some materials on conference gatherings, the history of Phi Kappa Phi, and NC State emeritus professor Wendell H. McKenzie's tenure as national president. The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi was founded in 1897 at the University of Maine to act as an honorary society recognizing academic excellence across all disciplines. A chapter of Phi Kappa Phi was established at North Carolina State College (University) in 1923, largely under the direction of W. A. Withers, head of the Department of Chemistry. The Zeta of North Carolina Chapter of Phi Beta Kappa records include chapter applications, application committee business, and correspondence relating to attempts to establish a chapter of the society at North Carolina State University, as well as materials related to the creation of the chapter and induction of the original undergraduate members in 1995 and subsequent years. The collection also includes materials from two Triennial Council meetings and some photographs of the organization's officers and ceremonies. The Zeta of North Carolina Chapter of Phi Beta Kappa was founded at North Carolina State University on April 17, 1995 reflecting a tremendous achievement for the University. The organization encourages acquisition of knowledge and the cultivation of understanding, support for intellectual honesty and tolerance, and the development of intellectual interests. Less

The records of the North Carolina State University Rugby Football Club include correspondence, schedules, game records, financial records, and other club business. The records also include archived web content of the Rugby Club's official website, captured quarterly beginning in September 2020. The North Carolina State University Rugby Football Club was organized in 1965. The records for the first few years of the club's existence were reportedly intentionally destroyed. The club competed with a number of teams up and down the Atlantic seaboard as a member of the Eastern Rugby Union and later joined the United States of America Rugby Football Union. The team has toured outside the region, including vists to Great Britian and has hosted teams from the United States and abroad. Less

The records of the North Carolina State University chapter of the Self Knowledge Symposium Foundation contain issues of the Foundation's newsletter, The Symposium. The Self Knowledge Symposium Foundation is an educational, non-profit organization for students engaged in spiritual search. The Self Knowledge Symposium Foundation was established sometime prior to 2000, and chapters are present at NC State, Duke University, and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. These records, containing materials from 1932 to 2015, include correspondence, meeting notes, administrative files, and other documents that detail the club's activities, including meetings, scientific lectures, research awards, administrative activities, and participation in activities of the national organization. The Sigma Xi Club was formed at North Carolina State College in 1938 and successfully petitioned to obtain Chapter status in the national Society of the Sigma Xi in 1944. The Society is dedicated to promoting and recognizing research achievements in a wide variety of scientific fields. The Chapter's activities include meetings, scientific lectures, research awards, administrative activities, and participation in activities of the national organization. Less
