The Sigma Chi Fraternity was established in 1855 at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio for the purposes of promoting friendship and helping to develop value-based leaders. North Carolina State's chapter (the Delta Epsilon Chapter) was formed out of the existing Chi Sigma Fraternity in 1943. The Delta Epsilon chapter remained active as of 2008.
