Topics include the safety and opperations of the on-campus nuclear reactor, the integration of African American students, increased enrollment, and other events and affairs of the campus during the time period of these records, 1954-1959. Carey H. Bostian joined the zoology faculty of North Carolina State College of Agriculture and Engineering (later North Carolina State University) in the autumn of 1930. He was appointed to several positions in the School of Agriculture. He was named associate dean in 1948, director of instruction in 1950, and professor of genetics and director of instruction in 1952. Bostian assumed the chancellorship of North Carolina State College in 1953, and he served in it until 1959, when he returned to teaching. During his tenure, the college completed a multi-million dollar expansion, the program of student activities was greatly enlarged, and enrollment passed 5000 for the first time. Less

After serving as President of the University of Arkansas from 1952-1959, John Tyler Caldwell accepted the chancellorship at North Carolina State College (later, North Carolina State University) and remained chancellor from 1959 to 1975. After retiring, Caldwell taught political science and education courses at North Carolina State University until 1985, and was president of the Triangle Universities Center for Advanced Research (1975-1982). Under his leadership, the student and faculty population nearly doubled, the School of Physical Sciences and Applied Mathematics was established, and for the first time the university offered a full range of degree programs in the humanities and social sciences. John William Harrelson was selected to head North Carolina State College in 1934 under the new title of Dean of Administration. His title changed to Chancellor in 1945, and he served that position until 1953. During his leadership, Harrelson participated in the consolidation of North Carolina's institutions of higher education. With the advent of World War II, military training played an expanding role at NC State. After 1945, the College saw expanded growth with the establishment of the School of Design and the School of Forestry, as well as the construction of a nuclear reactor. This office of African American Affairs worked in cooperation with the Affirmative Action Office. In 1990 North Carolina State University created a position of Coordinator of African American Affairs within the Office of the Provost. Dr. Augustus M. Witherspoon became the first to fill the position. Drs. William C. Grant, Rupert W. Nacoste, and Jose A. Picart have followed in his footsteps. By 2000 the position had become the Vice Provost for Diversity and African American Affairs. The Vice Provost for Diversity and African American Affairs had the primary responsibility of forging a shared vision concerning the recruitment, retention, and graduation of a diverse student body. The Historic Architecture Research Project Records contain drawings and project files by students in the Department of Architecture, School of Design, at North Carolina State University. Included are measured drawings, photographs, negatives, field notes and sketches, historical information, and essays. The majority of the projects document historic buildings in North Carolina. Twenty-one other states and the District of Columbia are represented, as are Germany, Mexico, and Colombia. Other course-related materials include syllabi, correspondence, uncompleted projects, and a petition to eliminate the course requirement. The correspondence series includes correspondence of professors in the North Carolina State University Department of Architecture, including Cecil D. Elliott, Henry L. Kamphoefner, Vernon Shogren, and Lawrence Wodehouse, with North Carolina State University architecture students, various North Carolina clerks of court, Charles E. Peterson of the National Park Service, and George S. Koyl, Moira B. Mathieson, and Earl H. Reed of the American Institute of Architects. Between 1951 and 1969, many architecture students at North Carolina State University completed summer projects documenting historic buildings and districts. Beginning in 1959, these projects were submitted to the National Park Service's Historic American Buildings Survey. The project was formalized with the creation of the undergraduate course, "Historic Architecture Research" (ARC 300), which was required for admission to the fifth year architecture program. In 1964, students undertook a project to record the town of Beaufort in Carteret County, N.C. Participants created maps, measured drawings of buildings, and an historical analysis of the town's development. Less

The purpose of the Engineers' Council was to provide a unified student voice within the School of Engineering, while also promoting the study and practice of the various disciplines in engineering. While the records of the Engineers' Council do not indicate gaps in the Councils' activity, the Council may have disbanded at some point and reformed in 1987, according to their website in 2008. The records of Company L-4 (North Carolina State University's company) of the Pershing Rifles contain their constitution and bylaws; meeting minutes; financial records; files on their events, competitions, and other activities; correspondence; and publications, including newsletters published by Company L-4, as well as publications collected from the company's overseeing regiment and the national office of the Pershing Rifles. Materials range in date from 1953 to 1977. The Pershing Rifles were established by General John Joseph Pershing at the University of Nebraska in 1891 to act as an honorary organization for members of the ROTC (Reserve Officers' Training Corps) program. The L-4 Company of the Pershing Rifles was established at NC State on February 7, 1953, and participates in ceremonies such as the Color Guard and the Pennant Guard for university and athletic events. The Student Government records contain meeting minutes, agenda, correspondence, news releases, publications, and financial records generated as a result of the establishment and activities of Student Government on NC State University's campus. Of particular interest are documents describing the "Student Rebellion" of 1905 which facilitated the need for student governing on campus as well as records documenting the ratification of the Constitution in 1955 and the creation of the Student Senate in 1969. There are also records concerning campus elections, political rallies and community involvement as well as student "disturbances" on and off campus. In addition, the collection contains publications of student government laws, bound copies of annual records and community service type publications which were circulated among the entire student body. The records also contain digital media related to the Student Government website, as well as archived content of the official website itself, beginning in 2017. Student Government at North Carolina State College of Agriculture and Engineering (later North Carolina State University) began in 1921. At that time, the group was made up of both students and faculty and was called Campus Government. Following the establishment of the Faculty Senate in 1954, a new Student Government Constitution was ratified in 1955, reestablishing a separate Student Government which included a student body president and governing committees.
