The collection contains information pertaining to new faculty orientation at North Carolina State University (formerly North Carolina State College), including packets of information sent out to new faculty previous to orientation, evaluations of the orientaton event, intra-university correspondence regarding the orientation event, and other related documents. The faculty orientation packets contain a wide variety of information, including: information pertaining to the North Carolina State Woman's Club, the University Club (previously, the Faculty Family Recreation Center), tourist information regarding Raleigh and North Carolina, and items of faculty interest, ranging from retirement information to athletic events schedules. The records contain only one document after 1981, which is dated 1992. The North Carolina State University Faculty Orientation and Hospitality Committee existed in or before 1955. (North Carolina State University was previously referred to as North Carolina State College.) The purpose of the Faculty Orientation and Hospitality Committee was to organize and host an annual orientation event for new faculty and to provide the new faculty and their families with information that would make their transition to the Raleigh area as welcoming as possible. New Faculty Orientation is still an event at North Carolina State University and packets are still provided to faculty prior to this event. New Faculty Orientation is currently (2012) sponsored by the Office of the Provost and administered through the North Carolina State Faculty Center for Teaching and Learning, which, apparently, handles new faculty affairs.

Materials range in date from 1951 to 1990. The Group Insurance Committee was convened at North Carolina State College in or before 1951 to address insurance and retirement topics for faculty and staff employees of the college. The committee has changed names several times: in 1955, it became the Committee on Group Insurance and Faculty Welfare; in 1977, the Group Insurance and Welfare Committee; and in 1989 adopted the current name of Group Insurance & Benefits Committee. A member of the committee has also reported to the University of North Carolina (UNC) System-wide insurance and benefits group since at least the mid-1970s, incorporating the recommendations of that group into decisions made locally for NC State employees. As of 2010, the purpose of the Group Insurance & Benefits Committee remains to act in an advisory role to the North Carolina State University Benefits Office on all matters of insurance, retirement, and benefits for university employees.

MoreThe Harrelson Fund Committee Records contains minutes, correspondence, financial information, and annual reports documenting the activities of the Harrelson Fund Committee. There are also a large amount of documents related to the Harrelson Lectures, many of which document the planning and scheduling of lectures. Also included are texts of many of the lectures and faculty nominations for lecturers as well as promotional material such as flyers, posters, and brochures. The Harrelson Fund Committee was established at North Carolina State College in 1961 to manage the funds of former Chancellor John W. Harrelson's endowment. Since the Committee's founding, they have aspired to use the funds in accordance with the priorities established in Harrelson's will: "lectures (first claim); books; works of art; appropriate markers for buildings named for persons." Accordingly, one of the most important functions of the Harrelson Committee has been to organize the annual Harrelson Lectures, where a well-known public or academic figure gives a series of talks at NC State University. During the 2018-2019 academic year, the Harrelson Fund Committee transitioned into the University Standing Committee on Speakers and Lectures.

The Committee on the History of the College was established in or before 1951 at North Carolina State College to coordinate the naming and dedication of campus buildings and roads, and to collect documentation on the history of the college. In 1972, the committee's name was changed to the Committtee on Commemoration, Institutional History, and Naming of Buildings; was changed again in 1977 to the Committee on Institutional History and Commemoration; and was changed sometime in the 1980s to the Institutional History and Commemoration Committee. This committee was formally dissolved in 2009.

The North Carolina State College (later North Carolina State University) Land-Grant Centennial took place in 1962, marking the hundredth anniversary of land-grant colleges and universities. The centennial was celebrated at both the national and state level, with efforts beginning in or before 1959. The NCSC Land-Grant Council was responsible for events throughout 1961 and 1962 relating to the centennial. Rudolph Pate acted as Chairman of the council.

MoreRanging in date from 1919 to 1966, the North Carolina State University Memorial Tower Committee records document the conceptualization and construction of the Memorial Tower on North Carolina State University's main campus. This collection chiefly contains correspondence, reports, and financial records. These records document the committee's interactions with architect William H. Deacy of New York; the J. D. Sargent Granite Company of Mt. Airy, N.C.; the Works Progress Administration; and other individuals and companies. There are also blueprints of the tower. The North Carolina State University Memorial Tower, popularly known as the Belltower, stands 115 feet tall and is one of North Carolina State's main landmarks. Vance Sykes, class of 1907, and other alumni, formed the Memorial Tower Committee in the 1920s with the hope of erecting a monument to honor the thirty-four State College (later North Carolina State University) students and alumni killed in World War I. The Memorial Tower is a landmark of North Carolina State University's campus and has become central to several school traditions, including the housing of class rings inside the Tower the night before graduation and the illumination of the Tower with red light on significant dates, including athletic victories of North Carolina State.

Max Gardner Award was conferred. Materials range in date from 1949 to 2008. The O. Max Gardner Award was established in 1949 to recognize the faculty member from among all University of North Carolina (UNC) system schools who has "...made the greatest contribution to the human race." Nominations for faculty representatives are collected at each university during the fall of the academic year, and one to three candidates are selected from among those nominees to represent each university. From this pool, one or two faculty members are chosen in the spring of the academic year by the UNC Board of Governors' Committee as the recipient(s) of the O. Max Gardner Award for that academic year.At North Carolina State University, the O. Max Gardner Award nominees are selected by a committee reporting to the Provost's Office.

The Committee was appointed by the North Carolina State College Dean of Administration, Colonel J. W. Harrelson. The committee members were faculty of North Carolina State College. The records include patent policy and procedures, patent and invention disclosures, agenda, minute and meeting notes, annual reports, examples of patent and invention diagrams, Invention management brochures and articles of incorporation of the North Carolina State College Research Foundation. In 1940 Colonel J. W. Harrelson, Dean of Administration of North Carolina State College (later University), appointed a committee of faculty members to make recommendations on institutional policy governing patents and inventions developed in the laboratories of the college and to prepare papers, by-laws and other documents necessary for the establishment of a research foundation at the college. The name of the corporation was the North Carolina State College Research Foundation. The purpose of the corporation was to promote educational objectives by encouraging, fostering and conducting scientific investigations and industrial research and by training and developing persons for the conduct of such investigations and research. The Patent and Invention Committee was also responsible for reviewing patent applications and patent disclosures and for issuing patents to corporations or individuals.

MoreThe records of the Physical Environment Committee at North Carolina State University contain meeting minutes, correspondence, memoranda, annual reports and other reports, committee membership rosters, and other information regarding the activities of the committee in their duties to monitor the physical environment of the campus. Materials range in date from 1932 to 2010. The Buildings and Grounds Committee was established at North Carolina State College in or before 1932 to consider matters related to the aesthetic appearance of the campus. In the committee's early years, this meant primarily considering issues of landscaping and other campus beautification, as well as adornment (and other decorative considerations) for the buildings on campus. In 1970, the Buildings and Grounds Committee was accused of becoming lax in these responsibilities, and was reorganized as the Campus Planning and Environment Committee, with duties to include a more wholistic responsibility for directing all matters related to the physical environment of the campus at North Carolina State University. In 1986, the committee was renamed the Physical Environment Committee. This committee existed until the 2016-2017 academic year, when it was dissolved.

MoreThe records of the Radiation Safety Committee at North Carolina State University include correspondence, meeting minutes, memoranda, reports and annual reports, and handbooks and other procedural information concerning the operation of the nuclear reactor and the use of radioisotopes on campus. Also inclued are some meeting minutes from the Reactor Safeguards Advisory Group, an associated component organization of the Radiation Safety Committee. The Radioisotope Committee was established in or before 1950 to oversee the use of radioisotopes on the campus of North Carolina State College, largely in conjunction with operations of the nuclear reactor. In 1953, the Radioisotope Committee recommended the establishment of a permanent, more official committee to take on these responsibilities (as well as to oversee the actual running of the nuclear reactor), and the Radioisotope Committee was thus replaced by Chancellor Harrelson with the Committee on Safety and Health for the Nuclear Reactor and Radioisotopes in September of that year. In 1969, the Committee on Safety and Health for the Nuclear Reactor and Radioisotopes was renamed the Radiation Protection Council, and has since been renamed the Radiation Safety Committee. This committee continues to be active as of 2010.

Records include correspondence, annual reports, meeting minutes, policy statements, as well as project proposals and award distribution from granting agencies. Materials within the collection reflect the changing research concerns of the university. Issues confronted by the Research Committee range from policy creation and funding problems to the creation of web pages, depending on the various time periods. The University Research Committee's records range in date from 1943 to 2004. The North Carolina State University (previously College) Research Committee provides oversight in the administration of research proposals and funding resources for members of the faculty. While committee responsibilities have changed and evolved throughout the years, the management of proposal development (including budget development and agency guidelines) have maintained. The Research Committee has been concerned with the review and development of institutional policy for research, with assistance in obtaining financial support for research and research facilities. Its principal activities include the following: (1)Obtaining information on sources of funds, (2) Assisting individual faculty members in structuring proposals for grants and contracts, (3) Administering special research funds.

It contains the records of the North Carolina State University Safety Committee (also known as the Committee on Safety and Health), including: meeting minutes, monthly reports, records of calls to the Safety Hotline, and information on radiation and laboratory safety. The North Carolina State University Safety Committee (also referred to as the Committee on Health and Safety) appears to have existed as early as 1961. The purpose of the committee was to ensure that adequate safety measures were utilized at North Carolina State University, particularly fire safety, radiation safety, and lab safety. Though all safety concerns were relevant to the committee, these receive particular attention in the files. Safety measures and education at North Carolina State University are now handled by the North Carolina State University Environmental Health and Safety Center. Currently, the center manages the Safety Hotline, publishes the AWARE newsletter, and manages health and safety concerns from general health concerns, to information regarding radiation safety and environmental affairs. Recent information regarding the Safety Center's undertakings and the records of the Safety Hotline are available online.

There is an additional folder of undated material in the collection. The collection primarily contains the minutes of the Social Functions Committee, as well as forms and information regarding chaperones, rental of locations and supplies, policies regarding social functions associated with the University, and correspondence related to said functions. Information relating to the Interfraternity Council and various fraternal and social organizations on campus can be found in this collection. A significant focus lies in expectations for student conduct and alcohol use at campus-related events. Though the included information spans from 1925 to 1971, there are few documents pertaining to the years 1925 to 1947. A Social Functions committee apparently existed at North Carolina State College (later North Carolina State University) in 1924-1925. The purpose of the Social Functions Committee was to establish codes of conduct for and organize social functions affiliated with the University and hosted by various student organizations. Social functions are currently submitted for approval through North Carolina State University's Public Events Calendar webpage. Events held within the Greek system are submitted for approval via the Department of Greek Life at North Carolina State University.

The work of the United Fund Committee was taken over by the State Employees Combined Campaign (SECC), which was established in 1984 by Governor James B. Hunt. The principal aim of the committee was to strengthen and sustain North Carolina and its citizens. The campaign assures employees and retirees continuous opportunity to support charitable organizations that are accountable, fiscally sound, and committed to improving the quality of life in our state, nation and world.

The records include minutes and meeting notes, orientation program schedules, memos from committee members, Student Orientation Committee annual reports, and letters to Chancellor Carey H. Bostian and other administrators. During the spring of 1953 North Carolina State College Chancellor Carey H. Bostian appointed a freshman orientation committee to appraise the orientation program and make recommendations for improvement. The committee members were students, staff and faculty of North Carolina State College. The members were unanimous in their opinion that the program should not be confined to "Freshman Week," but should continue through the first semester. The new program included a welcome by Chancellor Carey H. Bostian, a Coke party sponsored by the Woman's Club, recreation activities sponsored by the physical education department, a social evening at the college student union and the traditional tea hosted by the Chancellor. Over a period of time additional activities and programs were added to the Student Orientation Committe agenda, such as an orientation for the parents of freshman students and for black freshman students.

The primary goal of this committee was to discuss new educational concepts as they relate to the emerging television age. The focus was the television network of North Carolina State University and its educational programs. One of the main challenges of the committee was to ensure that educational programming reaches the largest number of individuals with the greatest positive impact.

Materials range in date from 1956 to 1986. The Cafeteria Advisory Committee was established in or before 1956 at North Carolina State College to monitor the food service operations at the college, assess comments and feedback from students, and provide recommendations for improvements to the college's food service operation. In 1971, the Cafeteria Advisory Committee was renamed the Food Services Committee, and tasked by the chancellor to conduct an investigation into revising the entire food service operation for what had become North Carolina State University. Sometime after this, the committee's name was again changed to the University Dining Committee. This committee remains active as of 2011, continuing to act in an advisory capacity for the University Dining office.
