Patricia "Pattie" Simmons Dowell, from Williamston, NC, was the first student and first graduate of East Carolina University in 1911. She then attended Peabody College in Nashville, Tennessee, where she earned a B.S., and North Carolina State College (now North Carolina State University), where she earned a master of science in education. She later earned a doctorate of education from New York University. She was a home economics professor at East Carolina University and retired in 1960. She died in 1975 at the age of 84.
