The Dan Sears Collection of Landscape Architecture and Greenways Projects, 1963-1999, documents the professional activities of landscape architect Dan Sears. The collection consists of proposals, project manuals, designs, development plans, and landscape architectural drawings created by Dan Sears and partnering architectural firms. Sears' projects include private residences, municipal buildings, public parks, and campuses. Sears Design Group was founded by Dan C.L. Sears, ASLA, in 1979. Over the years the firm has worked on projects largely in North Carolina but also in Georgia, Virginia, and even Wyoming. Sears Design Group has developed successful streetscapes for downtown areas as well as landscapes for private residences. In collaboration with Fitch Creations, Sears Design Group has provided landscape design and land use planning for the village of Fearrington in Chatham County, North Carolina. Dan C.L. Sears received the 2009 North Carolina Award from the North Carolina American Society of Landscape Architects at its meeting in 2009. Sears also worked with landscape architect Richard C. The Edwin Gilbert Thurlow papers contain personal and professional correspondence and other material written and received during Thurlow’s term as Professor of Landscape Architecture at North Carolina State University, 1947-1974, as well as approximately 1,600 photographs and photographic postcards, circa the 1930s and 1940s. Letters make up the bulk of the written collection, with notable correspondence between Thurlow and Richard C. Bell, Carey Hoyt Bostian, Roberto Burle Marx, Lewis Clarke, Harold Dunbar Cooley, Garrett Eckbo, Frederick Edmundson, Sam J. Ervin, George Watts Hill, B. Everett Jordan, George Matsumoto, Rodrigo Velarde Ortiz, Hubert B. Owens, Bremer W. Pond, Robert Royston, Terry Sanford, Robert Walter Scott, Stanley White and many North Carolina garden clubs. Other written material includes Thurlow’s 1968 article History of Landscape Architecture at NC State University. The photograph and postcard collection focuses on architecture and landscape architecture in Europe and Asia, as well as in the northeastern United States, primarily Boston, Massachusetts. Edwin Gilbert Thurlow (1909-1997) received a B.S. in Landscape Architecture from North Carolina State College of Agriculture and Engineering (later North Carolina State University) in 1932, and received Master of Landscape Architecture from Harvard University in 1936. He joined the North Carolina State College faculty in 1947 as Professor of Landscape Architecture, and taught there until his retirement in 1974. This collections contains 50 digital photographs of the Water Garden. The images are color and were taken in December 2007. The award-winning Water Garden Office Park was designed by landscape architect Richard "Dick" Bell, who operated his business at the site from 1955 until his retirement in 2007. Gil Stose specializes in photography for architects, developers, magazines, advertisers, and corporations. He was contracted by the NC State University Libraries in 2007 to photographically document the Water Garden before the property was redeveloped. Less

The Les Thornbury Interviews of Early North Carolina State University College of Design Faculty and Alumni contains DVDs and videotapes with video oral history interviews of early NC State University College of Design faculty and students conducted during the 1990s. These interviews have been converted to digital files and are accessible to researchers in that format. Leslie Arden Thornbury is a filmmaker and an alumnus of the NC State University School of Forest Resources and School of Agriculture and Life Sciences. He was born on December 19, 1947, in Raleigh, N.C. He attended radio school in San Diego, California and served as a radioman in the Vietnam War in the late 1960s. After his military service, Thornbury completed his education, received a bachelor of conservation from North Carolina State University in 1974 and embarked on his career as a television producer. During the 1990s he worked on a proposed video documentary of the history of the College of Design which included these video oral history interviews with early faculty and students. Less

The MacMillan and MacMillan Architectural Papers, 1919, 1950-2010, document the professional activities of Dan and Frank MacMillan and their architectural firm. The collection consists of architectural drawings with various iterations of designs, blueprints, construction documents, prospective elevations, technical drawings, and related materials. MacMillan and MacMillan’s projects include mostly private residences, with a small number of subdivision developments. Also included in the collection are drawings of landscape architecture projects by Richard C. Bell, done in collaboration with MacMillan and MacMillan projects. There is also a series of photographs from the period (1950-1952) in which the Dorton Arena was under construction; Dan MacMillan worked on the Dorton Arena as a project engineer for Muirhead Construction. Dan (1921- ) and Frank (d. 1991) MacMillan were born in Fayetteville, North Carolina and were principals in the MacMillan and MacMillan architectural firm. Dan MacMillan graduated from North Carolina State University in 1948 and worked for several years with the architect Jim Webb and then as a project engineer for Muirhead Construction on Raleigh’s Dorton Arena. In 1952 Dan MacMillan founded his firm, Dan MacMillan Architect and Associates in Fayetteville. After his brother, Frank, received his architecture license in the early 1950s Dan partnered with him and the firm was renamed MacMillan and MacMillan. Frank MacMillan died in 1991. The Richard C. Bell Drawings and Other Materials, 1924-2017, document the professional activities of landscape architect Richard C. Bell. The collection consists of landscape plans and planting details, prospective elevations, technical drawings, and web content, as well as associated architecture plans created by partnering architectural firms. A small number of project files, which document both residential and public spaces, are also found in the collection. Bell’s projects include private residences, subdivision developments, municipal and civic structures, various businesses, and some two dozen college and universities. Richard C. (Richard Chevalier) Bell (1928- ), a native of Manteo, N.C., received a degree in landscape architecture from North Carolina State University's College of Design (then, the North Carolina State College School of Design) in 1950. Afterwards, he apprenticed under Simonds & Simonds of Pittsburgh, Pa., and Frederick B. Stresau of Fort Lauderdale, Fla. At the age of 21, he became the youngest designer to receive the Prix de Rome, allowing him to study in Europe for two years. He became a Fellow of the American Academy in Rome. In 1954, Bell became a member of the American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA) and he was elected to Fellowship in the organization in 1980. In 1955, Bell founded his first firm in Raleigh, N.C., and for many years operated the business from its award-winning office space, Water Garden Office Park. His son-in-law Dennis Glazener worked for the firm, and eventually became a partner. Bell retired in 2007. Less

This collection contains an oral history interview with Dick Bell that was conducted by Chad Morgan in 2007. Bell discusses his career and student years at NC State. In addition to the audio recording, the collection contains field notes, abstracts, and transcripts. Born in Manteo, North Carolina, Richard C. "Dick" Bell attended the NC State School of Design, graduating in 1950. After an internship with Simons and Simons Landscape Architects in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Bell won the Prix de Rome. During his career as a landscape architect in Raleigh he designed the Brickyard (University Plaza) at NC State University, Pullen Park in Raleigh, and the amphitheater at Meredith College.
