The Daniel William Greenlee Journals document the life of a plantation owner in western North Carolina during the Reconstruction era and into the post-Reconstruction era. The journals span January 1st, 1874-March 23rd, 1891 with two gaps in coverage: January 6th, 1881-April 26th 1883 and April 13th 1884-February 15th 1885. His journals comment chiefly on the weather, a variety of farming and business activities, social visits to neighbors and relatives, and his personal and religious thoughts. Daniel William Greenlee resided on the family's Burke County (present-day McDowell County) plantation, called Turkey Cove, in close proximity to his father, brother, sister, and aunt. Contained in this collection are agricultural publications (ca. 1920 - ca. 1960); pamphlets, brochures, and flyers for agricultural equipment and other agricultural information (ca. 1920 - ca. 1960); and correspondence, other papers, and memorabilia of David C. and Edgar W. Worth (1916 - 1990). This collection formerly contained publications, brochures, etc. produced by NC State College/University (1920s – 1980s) but these have been moved to the University Archives. Brothers David Crenshaw and Edgar Wilson Worth graduated from North Carolina State College of Agriculture and Engineering (later NC State University), the former with a B.S. in Agriculture (1927) and M.S. in Animal Husbandry (1930) and the latter with a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering. David was the owner/operator of Oakhurt Dairy Farm in Wake County, NC, from 1927-1956. He was a prominent member of various dairy organzations in North Carolina. Less

This collection contains copies of speeches, talks and papers related to Nash Nicks Winstead's work as a professor and administrator at North Carolina State University from 1953 to 1990. There are as well materials pertaining to his work with the Ellis L. Phillips Foundation, his work for the Institute of Biological Sciences at North Carolina State University, and his service in the United States Citizen-Ambassador Program. Included are printed copies of Winstead's personal writings: histories of both North Carolina State University from 1953 to 1995 and the North Carolina State University Provost's Office from 1955 to 1993; genealogical writings about his ancestors and hometown of Leasburg, North Carolina, which contains information dating from 1800 to 1960; and a volume documenting the Winstead family pets. Also found are Winstead's personal and professional correspondence from 1959 to 1994. Nash Nicks Winstead (1925-) held a number of academic and administrative positions at North Carolina State University between 1953 and 1990. He began his career at North Carolina State College of Agriculture and Engineering (later North Carolina State University) as a professor of plant pathology, and moved on to become assistant provost, vice provost, vice chancellor, and interim chancellor. As an administrator he played a large role in facilitating affirmative action measures, and was particularly involved in the integration of African American students into academic and social programs at North Carolina State University. The records of the North Carolina State University Agricultural Policy Institute contain correspondence, minutes, reports, seminar and meeting information, publications, and other general records. Materials range in date from 1961 to 1970. The Agricultural Policy Institute was created in 1960 via a grant from the Kellogg Foundation, and was run by the Department of Agricultural Economics (which later merged into the Department of Economics and is currently called the Department of Agricultural and Resource Economics). The Institute's mission was primarily an educational one, and it set forth to study the economic issues facing the South and to aid the formation of public policy in confronting these issues. The records of the North Carolina State University Department of Biological and Agricultural Engineering contain correspondence, scholarship information, course and curriculum information, departmental history, facilities and farm equipment information, legal documents, research project records, publications, photographs and slides, and files on departmental extension and outreach work. Also included are a number of technical drawings of farm equipment and structures patented by department personnel as well as films (many digitized and available online) of agricultural equipment and activities. There is also a large series of drawings and plans mainly of agricultural structures. Materials range in date from 1920 to 2013. Organized agricultural engineering education at North Carolina State began in 1917, as an offering of several related courses in the Department of Agronomy. In 1937, the program's name was changed, and the degree became a B.S. in Agricultural Engineering. In 1940, the program separated from Agronomy, becoming a full-fledged department. The records of the North Carolina State University Department of Horticultural Science contain newsletters, budget information, academic and administrative reports, departmental publications, memoranda, information regarding departmental programs and events, slides, photographs, lantern slides, and glass plate negatives. Also included are publications produced with the North Carolina Commercial Flower Growers' Association. Materials range in date from the 1900s to 1990s.This collection also includes a large amount of photographic materials including Kodachrome slides, lantern slides, photographs, and negatives. Much of this material is undated. The Kodachrome slides appear to be from the 1940s to the 1970s. The lantern slides and glass plate negatives date to the early twentieth century and depict the planting, harvesting, sorting, packaging, and selling of crops. The lantern slides were hand colored by Effie Brown Earll Slingerland, an artist and advocate for women's suffrage. With the founding of NC State College in 1889, five academic divisions were created, one of which was the department of Horticulture, Arboriculture, and Botany. Following the general reorganization of the School of Agriculture in 1923, the horticultural extension work performed outside the department became fully integrated with the academic and research activities of the department. Today, the Department of Horticultural Science occupies Kilgore Hall (constructed in 1952), employs over fifty faculty, and continues to play an important role in state-wide horticultural research and extension. The Robert S. Curtis Papers contain manuscript and research materials with related correspondence for Curtis's eleven volume History of Livestock in North Carolina (1956). Robert Seth Curtis (1881-1962) graduated from Iowa State College in 1905 and worked on the Animal Industry staff at North Carolina State College (later North Carolina State University) from 1906 to 1928. He served as a livestock specialist with the State Department of Agriculture from 1942 until his retirement in 1951. Less
