MoreThe Albert Harvey Grimshaw Papers contains a photocopy, a microfilm copy and the original letter of indenture of apprenticeship document for Amos James Grimshaw to James Mather Daltry, to learn the "Art, trade, and business of a reed maker and Heald Knitter." This document was registered in the county of Lancaster, England, on 1867 May 11. There is also a typewritten copy of the "Grimshaw Newsletter," 1944. This newsletter covers events in the lives of Grimshaw's classmates at North Carolina State University. Rhode Island native Albert Harvey Grimshaw (1883-1949) received his education from the Massachusetts School of Pharmacy, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Columbia University, North Carolina State College, and the New Bedford Textile School. He was a pharmacist and wrestling coach before becoming an instructor in chemistry and dyeing at the New Bedford Textile School in 1917. In 1925 Grimshaw left New Bedford for North Carolina State College, where he served as professor of Textile Chemistry and Dyeing for 24 years. During this time, he published articles in almost all of the textile trade journals in the United States. He was a member of numerous professional societies, including the American Association of Textile Chemists and Colorists and the American Institute of Chemists. In 1948, The N.C. State College Chapter of Delta Kappa Phi presented a large portrait of Grimshaw to the School of Textiles.

Founded in 1981, the Association of Veterinarians for Animal Rights (AVAR) is a professional organization dedicated to the acquisition of rights for all nonhuman animals. The AVAR works to keep veterinarians and the public informed about philosophical and scientific issues surrounding the use of animals in education, farming, fur production, trapping, entertaiment and other areas. Educational reform, changes in the ways that animals are used in biomedical research, and the passage of legislation favorable to the benign treatment of animals in education, research, and animal shelters are the focus of the organization. The AVAR is based in Davis, California.

King Papers contain correspondence, political campaign materials, newsletters from a variety of local and national organizations, flyers, clippings, membership rosters, fundraising information, invitations, precinct maps, journal articles, newspaper editorials, and reports and resolutions on political issues. The majority of the material was generated through Cyrus King's work to promote civil rights and racial justice and his work on political campaigns. Correspondence includes letters to and from political figures. There are also documents that relate to his time as a librarian at North Carolina State University and a small amount of personal correspondence. Materials range in date from 1932 to 2014, with the majority dated after 1980. Cyrus Baldwin King (1922-2014), worked in the North Carolina State University Libraries for over twenty years and was active in a wide variety of efforts to promote civil rights and social justice. He was hired by N.C. State as an acquisitions librarian in 1963 and retired in 1984 as Assistant Director for Collection Management and Development. He was very politically active, writing tirelessly in support of the causes that he has adopted, most notably racial justice, campaigns to promote peace and non-violence, and other civil rights causes.

MoreThe Dietrich von Haugwitz Papers, 1971-2007, contains various materials related to animal rights issues. Included are publications and other papers relating to animal rights organizations. Organizations include People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, The Humane Society of the United States, Animal Protection Society, and North Carolina Network for Animals. The organizations are both local to North Carolina and national. Topical Files contain general information about animal rights, animals used in biomedical research, hunting, vegetarianism, and individual species of animals. Several of the newsletters and news clippings contain materials written by Dietrich and Eva von Haugwitz. A few of the news articles relate to research studies at North Carolina State University which used animals. North Carolina State University philosphy professer Tom Regan, an opponent of animal studies, also appears in several articles. Dietrich von Haugwitz (1927-2007) was a German-born animal rights activist, who lived in Durham, North Carolina. Haugwitz became involved in animal rights in the 1980s, and founded a local chapter of the North Carolina Network for Animals. His wife Eva was also involved in animal rights activism, and served as president of the local Animal Protection Society. Haugwitz worked as a computer programmer/systems analyst at Duke University Medical Center before retiring in 1992.

Also included are samples of letterhead stationery of the American Football Coaches Association. Earle La Rue Edwards (1908 - 1997) was the head football coach at North Carolina State University from 1954 to 1971. After his retirement, he became the Assistant Director of Foundations and Development. During his tenure as head coach, Edwards received the ACC Coach of the Year Award four times. His teams won five ACC titles and played in two bowl games. Edwards received a degree in engineering from Penn State. Before coming to North Carolina, he was an assistant coach at Penn State and Michigan State. He became president of the American Football Coaches Association in 1970, and was inducted into Sports Hall of Fame in North Carolina and Pennsylvania in 1974. He received the Watauga Medal from N.C. State in 1991.

MoreThe Esther Mechler Papers consists of papers and artifacts documenting Mechler's interest and participation in the animal rights and animal welfare movement. It includes writings by individuals and organizations, as well as published volumes and periodicals. Correspondence about animal or animal rights-related issues and the background work for two of Mechler's animal rights projects are also present, as well as audiovisual materials and memorabilia from various animal rights or animal welfare groups and events. Esther Mechler has been involved with the animal rights and animal welfare movement since the 1970s. An instrumental figure in several organizations, she was a founding member of both the Fairfield County, Connecticut branch of Friends of the Animals, and the national Animal Rights Network. Mechler worked to create and distribute animal protection related audio-visual materials and has also been particularly active in the area of preventing pet overpopulation. In 1990 she founded Spay/USA, a national referral service for low-cost spay/neutering.

This collection consists mainly of budget reports and conference proceedings digests from Winter Simulation Conferences, 1968-1998. Additionally there are technical reprints and operational manuals used by Reitman when he was employed by the Norden Division of United Aircraft Corporation. Julian Reitman was the leader of one of the first simulation application groups in industry at the Norden Division of United Aircraft Corporation. They created numerous simulation models of real systems including naval vessel performance, anti-submarine warfare, effectiveness of airborne radar, railed automated highways, air traffic control, message switching in communications, and yield prediction for integrated circuit production. Reitman also was one of the founders of the Winter Simulation Conference (WSC) in 1968. Reitman wrote one of the first simulation textbooks, Computer Simulation Applications: Discrete Event Simulation for Synthesis and Analysis of Complex Systems (1971).

Included are the publications of the First Osborne Group (Foghorn and Foglight), the Chicago user group (PIP), the Seattle-Tacoma area group (Toggle) and the Raleigh Osborne Computer Group or the Raleigh Other Computer Group (R.O.C.C. Pile). Michael Rulison has had a long career in research in the Research Triangle area of North Carolina. While associated with the Research Triangle Institute, he authored A Study of State Uses of Smith Island (1970) for the North Carolina Department of Conservation and Development. During the 1980s, while with the Center for Population and Urban-Rural Studies, he wrote several technical reports of travel studies for the Travel and Tourism Division of the North Carolina Department of Commerce. He later worked for the Institutional Research program at North Carolina State University. Rulison has also been involved with Osborne computer user groups, RTPNet, the Triangle Open Source Lab, and the North Carolina Consumers Council. The Osborne Computer Corporation released the first widely available personal computer, the Osborne 1, in 1981, inspiring groups of computer programming hobbyists all over the country.
