Founded in 1981, the Association of Veterinarians for Animal Rights (AVAR) is a professional organization dedicated to the acquisition of rights for all nonhuman animals. The AVAR works to keep veterinarians and the public informed about philosophical and scientific issues surrounding the use of animals in education, farming, fur production, trapping, entertaiment and other areas. Educational reform, changes in the ways that animals are used in biomedical research, and the passage of legislation favorable to the benign treatment of animals in education, research, and animal shelters are the focus of the organization. The Cyrus B. King Papers contain correspondence, political campaign materials, newsletters from a variety of local and national organizations, flyers, clippings, membership rosters, fundraising information, invitations, precinct maps, journal articles, newspaper editorials, and reports and resolutions on political issues. The majority of the material was generated through Cyrus King's work to promote civil rights and racial justice and his work on political campaigns. Correspondence includes letters to and from political figures. There are also documents that relate to his time as a librarian at North Carolina State University and a small amount of personal correspondence. Materials range in date from 1932 to 2014, with the majority dated after 1980. Cyrus Baldwin King (1922-2014), worked in the North Carolina State University Libraries for over twenty years and was active in a wide variety of efforts to promote civil rights and social justice. He was hired by N.C. State as an acquisitions librarian in 1963 and retired in 1984 as Assistant Director for Collection Management and Development. He was very politically active, writing tirelessly in support of the causes that he has adopted, most notably racial justice, campaigns to promote peace and non-violence, and other civil rights causes. The James B. Hunt Papers, 1945, 1953-2018 include videotapes, films, compact discs, audiotapes, photographs, correspondence, speeches, news clippings, ad slicks, position papers, advertisement scripts, cue sheets, stickers, buttons, artifacts, and brochures relating to the personal life and political campaigns of James Baxter Hunt Jr., who was a Democratic lieutenant governor, 1973-1976, and four-term governor of North Carolina, 1977-1985 and 1993-2001. The largest portion of the collection is manuscripts, which feature debates, speeches, correspondences, advertisements and personal notes. The bulk of the materials include Hunt’s 1976 and 1980 gubernatorial campaigns, his unsuccessful 1984 bid to unseat Republican Jesse Helms as United State Senator from North Carolina, and his 1992 and 1996 gubernatorial campaigns. Also included are materials documenting Hunt’s acts post-governorship, including the establishment of the Smart Start program, the Institute for Emerging Issues, and The Hunt Institute. Not included are any materials specifically documenting Hunt’s official acts as governor. James Baxter Hunt, Jr. (1937- ) was the Democratic governor of North Carolina from 1977 to 1985 and 1993 to 2001. After serving as Lieutenant Governor from 1973 to 1977, he served two terms as Governor, from 1977 to 1981 and 1981 to 1985. In 1984 he waged an unsuccessful campaign to unseat Republican Jesse Helms as United States Senator from North Carolina. The closely contested race, which Helms eventually won with 52% of the vote, garnered national attention as both sides engaged in negative campaigning. The campaign ultimately cost a combined $22 million, making it the most expensive Senate race in American history to that point. Hunt returned to elected office in 1993, winning a third term as Governor by defeating Republican Lieutenant Governor James C. Gardner. In 1996, he was elected to a fourth term over Republican state Representative Robin Hayes. Hunt left the office of the governor in 2001. Less

Webb, and his mother, Martha Webb. The major groupings of records are Project Files, Drawings, Maps, Professional Papers, Personal Papers, Photographs and Slides, Videos, Artifacts, John B. Webb, and Martha Webb. James Murray Webb was born in 1908 and died in 2000. In 1947, he joined the new City and Regional Planning School at the University of North Carolina (UNC) in Chapel Hill, where he served as a faculty member for thirty years. He and his brother, John Bruce Webb, maintained an architectural practice in Chapel Hill and designed a number of modernist houses and other buildings in the area. Less

The Larry K. Monteith Papers contain correspondence, reports, proposals, published articles, newspaper clippings, speeches, and artifacts. The collection spans Monteith's career at North Carolina State University, including material from 1933 to 1998. It covers his tenure as undergraduate, faculty member, dean, interim Chancellor, and Chancellor at the University. The primary focuses of the collection are the Microelectronics Center of North Carolina (MCNC), his research publications as an electrical engineer, and his speeches as Chancellor. Larry King Monteith enrolled at North Carolina State University in 1956, receiving a BS (1960) in electrical engineering. He then received an MS (1962) degree and a PhD (1965) from Duke University in electrical engineering. After holding positions at Bell Telephone Laboratories, analyzing the NIKE missile system, and participating in a semiconductor research group, Monteith joined the faculty of North Carolina State University's Electrical Engineering Department. He became department head in 1974. He was named dean of the School of Engineering in 1978 and was named chancellor of North Carolina State University in May 1990 after serving as interim chancellor for a year. The Lisa Finlay Papers contains materials documenting Finlay's interest and participation in both the animal rights and ecofeminist movements. Some items are related to general animal rights or philosophical issues, but the majority focus on ecofeminism or the intersection between feminism and animal rights. Included are a variety of published and unpublished written materials, as well as materials from various animal rights and ecofeminist groups and events and audiovisual materials. The bulk of these audiovisual materials are the only known video copies of the 1993 ANGFAR (A New Generation for Animal Rights) Conference. Lisa Finlay is an animal rights advocate with a specific interest in feminism. When she was a graduate student at North Carolina State University, animal rights activist Tom Regan served as a thesis advisor for her self-designed degree: "Forms of Oppression: Sexism, Racism, and Speciesism." As the coordinator and contact for the 1993 ANGFAR conference, Finlay was instrumental in the organization of this event. A long-time member of Feminists for Animal Rights (FAR), Finlay was hired as the organization's first director in 1994 and went on to serve the organization in a number of different capacities. Less

The Peter Batchelor Papers, 1967-2010, contain correspondence, administrative papers, urban design studies, computer printouts, doctoral papers, graphic materials, and industry publications relating to Batchelor's career as a professional urban planner and his administration of the American Institute of Architects, North Carolina’s (AIANC) Urban Design Assistance Program. Also included are VHS tapes of his lectures and exhibition materials created by students documenting Batchelor's time as a professor of design and urban planning at North Carolina State University. Born in London, England, on May 22, 1934, and died on April 15, 2020, Peter Batchelor earned a Bachelor of Architecture (honors) from the University of British Columbia in 1960, Masters of Architecture and City Planning from the University of Pennsylvania in 1966, and a Doctorate in City Planning from the latter institution in 1972. He taught at North Carolina State University’s School of Architecture from 1968 until 2007, when he retired as Professor Emeritus. Batchelor is also a licensed practitioner in architecture and city planning and former director of the American Institute of Architects, North Carolina (AIANC) Urban Design Assistance Program which provides interdisciplinary problem-solving teams to communities. The collection reflects work produced from 1974 to 1998, but contains only a few items dated before 1980. The records include correspondence, project reports, architectural drawings, videos, and publications. Much of the material reflects Mace's work as a consultant with BFE, Inc. Ronald L. Mace was a nationally and internationally recognized architect, product designer, and educator whose design philosophy provided a design foundation for a more usable world. He coined the term "universal design" to describe the concept of designing products and the built environment to serve the needs of people regardless of their age, ability, or status in life. Less

Papers and audiovisual materials documenting Scott Chilton’s botanical research, teaching career, and personal life. This includes notebooks, research and laboratory data, articles, news clippings, collected works, Chilton’s own writings and publications, course materials, correspondence, legal documents, slides, photographs, and VHS video recordings. The collection’s contents date from between 1917 and 2004, but the bulk of the collection dates from after the mid-1960s. After completing his education and serving in the United States Navy, William Scott Chilton began teaching at the University of Washington. He moved to Washington University-St. Louis before beginning his employment in North Carolina State University's Botany Department in 1983. A natural products chemist, Chilton distinguished himself in research focused upon the phytochemistry, fungi, and plant-associate microbes, the structure of novel amino acids, and ethnobotanical uses of plants. He was well known for his research on a number of topics, including mushroom toxins, crown-gall metabolites, and the corn toxin DIMBOA. Chilton continued to teach and work in his phytochemistry lab after his retirement from NC State University in 2003. He died suddenly while hiking in August 2004. Less
