The committee has changed names several times: in 1955, it became the Committee on Group Insurance and Faculty Welfare; in 1977, the Group Insurance and Welfare Committee; and in 1989 adopted the current name of Group Insurance & Benefits Committee. A member of the committee has also reported to the University of North Carolina (UNC) System-wide insurance and benefits group since at least the mid-1970s, incorporating the recommendations of that group into decisions made locally for NC State employees. As of 2010, the purpose of the Group Insurance & Benefits Committee remains to act in an advisory role to the North Carolina State University Benefits Office on all matters of insurance, retirement, and benefits for university employees. The Buildings and Grounds Committee was established at North Carolina State College in or before 1932 to consider matters related to the aesthetic appearance of the campus. In the committee's early years, this meant primarily considering issues of landscaping and other campus beautification, as well as adornment (and other decorative considerations) for the buildings on campus. In 1970, the Buildings and Grounds Committee was accused of becoming lax in these responsibilities, and was reorganized as the Campus Planning and Environment Committee, with duties to include a more wholistic responsibility for directing all matters related to the physical environment of the campus at North Carolina State University. In 1986, the committee was renamed the Physical Environment Committee. This committee existed until the 2016-2017 academic year, when it was dissolved. Less

The records of the Radiation Safety Committee at North Carolina State University include correspondence, meeting minutes, memoranda, reports and annual reports, and handbooks and other procedural information concerning the operation of the nuclear reactor and the use of radioisotopes on campus. Also inclued are some meeting minutes from the Reactor Safeguards Advisory Group, an associated component organization of the Radiation Safety Committee. The Radioisotope Committee was established in or before 1950 to oversee the use of radioisotopes on the campus of North Carolina State College, largely in conjunction with operations of the nuclear reactor. In 1953, the Radioisotope Committee recommended the establishment of a permanent, more official committee to take on these responsibilities (as well as to oversee the actual running of the nuclear reactor), and the Radioisotope Committee was thus replaced by Chancellor Harrelson with the Committee on Safety and Health for the Nuclear Reactor and Radioisotopes in September of that year. In 1969, the Committee on Safety and Health for the Nuclear Reactor and Radioisotopes was renamed the Radiation Protection Council, and has since been renamed the Radiation Safety Committee. Materials range in date from 1956 to 1986. The Cafeteria Advisory Committee was established in or before 1956 at North Carolina State College to monitor the food service operations at the college, assess comments and feedback from students, and provide recommendations for improvements to the college's food service operation. In 1971, the Cafeteria Advisory Committee was renamed the Food Services Committee, and tasked by the chancellor to conduct an investigation into revising the entire food service operation for what had become North Carolina State University. Sometime after this, the committee's name was again changed to the University Dining Committee. This committee remains active as of 2011, continuing to act in an advisory capacity for the University Dining office. Less

North Carolina State University's University Government Committee Records include memos, reports, drafts and letters documenting the work of at the committee. The most prominent aspect of that work was the establishment of the Faculty Senate and the refinement of mechanisms for faculty representation in University academic administration during the years 1952-1974. There are also a single folder of materials relating to an earlier iteration of the Committee and its 1946 report, and a folder of documents from the mid-1980s regarding faculty status of librarians. Aside from this folder, the records do not document the Committee's activities after 1974, although the Committee appears to remain in existence up to the present (August 2011). A College Committee on Government and Administration was formed in 1945 to survey the governmental structure of the then North Carolina State College. It issued a report and appears to have disbanded the following year. In 1952 a Committee on College Government was formed to recommend "an instrument of faculty government." Based on its recommendations, a Faculty Senate was instituted on a three-year trial basis in 1954, and the Committee was charged with observing the faculty government and make recommendations for its improvement. The trial period was extended an additional three years in 1957, and in 1960 the Committee recommended that the Senate be established on a permanent basis. The Committee continued to observe faculty government, and made additional recommendations. Its name was changed to the University Government Committee in 1967. The committee was abolished in 2006 and its duties are now handled by the Executive Committee of the Faculty Senate. Less

The University Planning Committee Records contain meeting agendas and minutes, memos, calendars, reports, and other documents produced by and about the North Carolina State University, University Planning Committee from 1948 to 1991 with a gap from 1953 to 1983. While the purpose of the committee was to plan the development of the university, the contents within the collection are primarily about the committee itself. According to the contents of the collection, the North Carolina State University, University Planning Committee was meant to develop university-wide, long-range goals that serve as guidelines for the development of departments, colleges, schools, and administrative units. These goals were related to research, graduate education, diversity, and several other subtopics. The earliest documentation from 1948 calls the entity the Planning Committee of the School of Engineering of the North Carolina State College of Agriculture and Engineering at the University of North Carolina, indicating that the committee was originally formed only for the School of Engineering and later expanded to serve the university as a whole. There is no record of when this committee began or who started it; from the collection, it is clear that it existed in some form as of 1948. The University Planning Committee appears to have existed as late as 2005 but in the present, as of 2012, it has been replaced by the Strategic Planning Committee started in 2010 by Chancellor Randy Woodson. This committee serves the same functions as the University Planning Committee. Less

Materials range in date from 1951 to 1984. The College Traffic Committee was established at North Carolina State College in or before 1951 to determine traffic and parking regulations and procedures for the campus. In its early years, the College Traffic Committee worked closely with the Student Government Traffic Committee, which served as the student voice in campus traffic matters. In 1970, the College Traffic Committee was renamed the Parking & Traffic Committee, and was again renamed (in 1980) as the University Transportation Committee. At some point in North Carolina State University's history, a department on campus was formed and dedicated to the daily maintenance and regulation of traffic procedures (as of 2010, North Carolina State University Transportation). Records for the University Traffic Committee end abruptly following the conclusion of the 1983-1984 academic year; the duties and functions of this committee were possibly absorbed by the University's Transportation department, or may also have been incorporated into the duties of the Physical Environment Committee. The North Carolina State University Department of Student Development worked to help college students become competent as adults. This included helping students become more ethical, responsible, enthusiastic about their involvement in human affairs, and optimistic about their future. In addition, the department had a special interest and responsibility in helping students with cultural understanding relating to ethnicity. The Department of Student Development was dissolved sometime during or after 2000, with its member programs each becoming separate departments within the Division of Student Affairs. Less

Materials range in date from 1942 to 2009. The North Carolina State University Student Organization Resource Center, now known as the James H. Woodward Student Involvement Center, exists to meet the needs of students who are interested in involvement on campus through organized groups. As a part of the Division of Student Affairs, one of the Student Involvement Center's main responsibilities is to advise students who start or participate in registered student organizations. As of 2017, there are more than 700 registered student organizations at NC State, including Student Government and the Union Activities Board. The Faculty Senate General Records contain files of all administrative aspects of the Faculty Senate. The bulk of the records come from different committees and include materials on honorary degrees, the search for a new chancellor, Board of Trustees, Chancellor's Liasion, elections, budget, and student affairs. Also included are materials on the selection of outstanding teachers and Watauga Medal recepients, retention of African American students, Founders Day events, and other administrative functions of the Faculty Senate. The first Faculty Council meetings were held in 1923, and the Council remained in place as an ad hoc advisory board to the then College President. At one point in time this faculty group may have also been called the Advisory Committee of the General Faculty. In 1954, the Faculty Senate was organized to replace the old Faculty Council. Less

Formerly known as the Faculty Council and the Advisory Committee of the General Faculty, the Faculty Senate provides advice to the Chancellor and, through the Chancellor, to the Board of Trustees. In this role, the Faculty Senate discusses with or provides information to any administrator with authority and responsibility for a decision, recommends policies to any administrator who is authorized to make a decision, and makes policy recommendations to the Chancellor, Provost and Vice Chancellors. The North Carolina State University, Friends of the College Records, 1959-1994, contain brochures, campaign materials, contracts, correspondence, photographs, programs, publicity materials, season materials, and slides relating to the operation of the Friends of the College and featured performances sponsored by the organization. Also included are Friends of the College Board of Directors records. The Friends of the College Concert Series was started in 1959 as an attempt by North Carolina State College (later University) to increase its visibility and role in the local community. The first director of the program was Gerald Erdahl, then the director of the College Student Union. From 1959 until 1993, the Friends of the College sponsored hundreds of concerts and other cultural presentations in Reynolds Coliseum. The Friends of the College sponsored no performances after 1994 and became defunct soon thereafter. Less
