The Albert Harvey Grimshaw Papers contains a photocopy, a microfilm copy and the original letter of indenture of apprenticeship document for Amos James Grimshaw to James Mather Daltry, to learn the "Art, trade, and business of a reed maker and Heald Knitter." This document was registered in the county of Lancaster, England, on 1867 May 11. There is also a typewritten copy of the "Grimshaw Newsletter," 1944. This newsletter covers events in the lives of Grimshaw's classmates at North Carolina State University. Rhode Island native Albert Harvey Grimshaw (1883-1949) received his education from the Massachusetts School of Pharmacy, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Columbia University, North Carolina State College, and the New Bedford Textile School. He was a pharmacist and wrestling coach before becoming an instructor in chemistry and dyeing at the New Bedford Textile School in 1917. In 1925 Grimshaw left New Bedford for North Carolina State College, where he served as professor of Textile Chemistry and Dyeing for 24 years. During this time, he published articles in almost all of the textile trade journals in the United States. He was a member of numerous professional societies, including the American Association of Textile Chemists and Colorists and the American Institute of Chemists. In 1948, The N.C. Wimberley, Dept. of Sociology and Anthropology Head. Materials range in date from 1862 to 2010. Sociology courses were first offered at State College (now NC State University) in 1920 with the arrival of Dr. Carl Cleveland Taylor and graduate student Carle Clark Zimmerman. Both would later become important figures in the field of sociology. Rural sociology, which sought to improve the quality of life of rural communities, was a focus of the early program. After several iterations, the Department merged with the Department of Anthropology in 1966 to become the Department of Sociology and Anthropology. This collection documents the successful efforts of the North Carolina Forestry Foundation to acquire forest lands for North Carolina State College of Agriculture and Engineering (later North Carolina State University) for demonstration, teaching, and research while at the same time operating the forest on a profitable basis. Materials range in date from 1869 to 2016. Julius V. Hofmann to set up the forestry program at North Carolina State College of Agriculture and Engineering in 1929. One of his immediate goals was to acquire some forestland for laboratory, research, and demonstration purposes. Unable to secure funding from the university or the state of North Carolina, Hofmann determined the only recourse was to purchase the land on a self-liquidating basis. He and some of the college trustees incorporated the North Carolina Forestry Foundation on April 15, 1929, to manage and develop the Poole Woods, a 74.94 acre tract in Wake County, North Carolina, and the first forest obtained by the Foundation. The Chinqua-Penn Plantation records contain the papers of the Penn family (1863-1975, bulk 1923-1946) as well as the records of the management of the property by the University of North Carolina, Greensboro, North Carolina State University, and the Chinqua-Penn Foundation (1921-1926, 1957-2002, bulk 1965-2002). This collection includes correspondence, reports, financial records, property and animal records, architectural drawings, photographs and scrapbooks, audio-visual materials, newspaper clippings, marketing materials, and inventories of the art, artifacts, and furniture collections, among other items. Within the materials dating from the management period are extensive records from research conducted on the property and the Penn family. Named for the chinquapin, a dwarf chestnut tree, Chinqua-Penn Plantation was built by Thomas Jefferson "Jeff" Penn and Margaret Beatrice "Betsy" Schoellkopf (Schwill) Penn during the 1920s. The large house reflected their lifestyle of entertaining and traveling, and it showcased the art and furniture they collected from around the world. The plantation's grounds evolved into an exotic horticultural collection of both native and imported plants. Chinqua-Penn was maintained by the University of North Carolina, Greensboro from 1965 to the late 1980s. NC State University took over its management and reopened it shortly thereafter. In 1991, the Chinqua-Penn Foundation was formed to preserve the house and open it to visitors. The foundation secured the plantation's status as a National Historic Landmark. Although NC State University continues to administer the Betsy-Jeff Penn 4-H Center on the mansion grounds, further funding problems forced the foundation to close the museum's doors.
