The materials date from 1896 to 2007. As of 2013, the Office of Public Affairs consisted of three divisions: Communications Services, News Services, and Web Communications. The News Services division uses a wide variety of methods to promote NC State University on local, national, and international levels. Staff members utilize traditional press releases, news tips, and direct contact with journalists to give the university, its scholarship and its research more visibility. Topics include the consolidation of the University of North Carolina, post-World War II veteran enrollment, the design and and construction of the nuclear reactor on NC State's campus, and other general history of the campus during the time period of these records, 1933-1953. John William Harrelson was selected to head North Carolina State College in 1934 under the new title of Dean of Administration. His title changed to Chancellor in 1945, and he served that position until 1953. During his leadership, Harrelson participated in the consolidation of North Carolina's institutions of higher education. With the advent of World War II, military training played an expanding role at NC State. After 1945, the College saw expanded growth with the establishment of the School of Design and the School of Forestry, as well as the construction of a nuclear reactor. Harrelson died in Raleigh, North Carolina, in 1955. Less

The Park Scholarships were established at North Carolina State University in 1996 with a grant from the Park Foundation of Ithaca, N.Y., to fund an inaugural class of 25 scholars. The Park Scholarships program was named for Roy H. Park, NC State University class of 1931. The Department of Social Studies was established in 1947 as part of the Basic Division, and offered courses for engineers that emphasized the connections between liberal studies and science and technology. George A. Gullette served as Head of the Department from its founding in 1947 until his death in 1969. The records of the Pi Alpha Chapter (North Carolina State's chapter) of Pi Tau Sigma include correspondence, financial records, membership rosters, meeting minutes, and other general information about the chapter, its members, and its activities. This subgroup also contains some materials distributed by the national office of Pi Tau Sigma, primarily issues of their annual publication, The Condenser of Pi Tau Sigma. Pi Tau Sigma is the international mechanical engineering honor society, the purpose of which is to establish a means of fellowship and communication between individuals who study and practice mechanical engineering. North Carolina State's chapter, the Pi Alpha Chapter, was established in 1942, and is open to mechanical engineering students who either rank in the top 25% of their class as juniors, or top 33% as seniors. Graduate students in mechanical engineering at NC State whose undergratuate universities did not have a chapter of Pi Tau Sigma are also allowed to join.
