The Albert Harvey Grimshaw Papers contains a photocopy, a microfilm copy and the original letter of indenture of apprenticeship document for Amos James Grimshaw to James Mather Daltry, to learn the "Art, trade, and business of a reed maker and Heald Knitter." This document was registered in the county of Lancaster, England, on 1867 May 11. There is also a typewritten copy of the "Grimshaw Newsletter," 1944. This newsletter covers events in the lives of Grimshaw's classmates at North Carolina State University. Rhode Island native Albert Harvey Grimshaw (1883-1949) received his education from the Massachusetts School of Pharmacy, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Columbia University, North Carolina State College, and the New Bedford Textile School. He was a pharmacist and wrestling coach before becoming an instructor in chemistry and dyeing at the New Bedford Textile School in 1917. In 1925 Grimshaw left New Bedford for North Carolina State College, where he served as professor of Textile Chemistry and Dyeing for 24 years. During this time, he published articles in almost all of the textile trade journals in the United States. He was a member of numerous professional societies, including the American Association of Textile Chemists and Colorists and the American Institute of Chemists. In 1948, The N.C. The Edward Scull King Papers relate to King's work with the Young Men's Christian Association, and includes correspondence, certificates and honors, photographs, and North Carolina State College memorabilia. Edward Scull King (1887-1962) worked at North Carolina State College as Secretary of the YMCA from 1919 until his retirement in 1955. The papers include correspondence, materials on environmental issues, organizational materials, teaching materials, photographs, published material, and Barkalow's extensive research into the gray squirrel. Frederick Schenck Barkalow Jr. (1914-1982) served as a professor of zoology at North Carolina State College (later North Carolina State University) from 1947 to 1979. The collection includes a diploma for a master of science in education awarded to Pattie Simmons Dowell by North Carolina State College on July 24, 1930. Patricia "Pattie" Simmons Dowell, from Williamston, NC, was the first student and first graduate of East Carolina University in 1911. She then attended Peabody College in Nashville, Tennessee, where she earned a B.S., and North Carolina State College (now North Carolina State University), where she earned a master of science in education. She later earned a doctorate of education from New York University. She was a home economics professor at East Carolina University and retired in 1960. She died in 1975 at the age of 84. Less

Bennett, "History of Crop Science Extension," an "Overview of U. S. Tobacco" (9-4-85), and a bound book of correpondence to Bennett on the occasion of his retirement (1966). Roy R. Bennett served as assistant Extension agent in Rowan County, North Carolina, and the Extension agent in Pitt County, North Carolina. This collection contains a one-page biography of Sol Williams (Doc) Newton written by his son, mementos from Newton's induction into the American Legion Baseball Hall of Fame, correspondence and photocopies of clippings and citations regarding Coach Newton's career in intercollegiate athletics, and several obituary notices. Newton (1893-1970) played professional baseball with the Baltimore Orioles and coached college football and baseball at Davidson College before becoming head football coach at North Carolina State College (later North Carolina State University) from 1937 to 1944. Teaching as a Profession, a lecture given by Wayland P. Seagraves for Occupational Education 103, March 7, 1930. This six-page report outlines the advantages and disadvantages of entering the teaching profession. Wayland P. Seagraves (1910-1992) received both his bachelors (1932) and masters (1933) degrees in electrical engineering from North Carolina State College of Agriculture and Engineering (later North Carolina State University). He was a member of the school's faculty from 1936 to 1948, and returned in 1957 after working as a radio engineer for WPTF. In 1969, the univeristy honored Seagraves with an "Outstanding Teacher" award. In 1970, alumni selected him as the top teacher in the School of Engineering. Seagraves retired from North Carolina State in 1976, after teaching for 38 years. He then moved to Salter Path, N.C., where he served as town clerk for ten years. Seagraves died in Raleigh. Less
