MoreThis collection contains tapes, transcripts, and biographies for six interviews conducted in 2006 and 2007 by Chad Morgan from the NCSU Libraries staff. The people who were interviewed had been associated with North Carolina State University's Centennial Campus, a research and advanced technology community where university, industry, and government partners interact in multidisciplinary programs. North Carolina State University's Centennial Campus is a research and advanced technology community where university, industry, and government partners interact in multidisciplinary programs. In 1984, 355 acres in west Raleigh was transferred to the University. The initial allotment was enlarged the following year by an additional 450 acres. The campus developed as a series of clusters with a mix of academic and private research buildings. In the early 1990s, the College of Textiles moved from the main North Carolina State University campus to Centennial land and the Engineering Graduate Research Center was established. The early 1990s also saw government tenants moving onto Centennial Campus. As of 2009 the Centennial Campus was home to 61 corporate and government partners as well as 73 NC State research centers, institutes, laboratories and department units. In 2004-2006 the NCSU Libraries conducted the Centennial Campus Documentation Project to acquire, preserve, and make accessible archival records documenting the history of Centennial Campus. As part of the project Libraries' staff conducted oral history interviews with key players in the campus's development.

The North Carolina State University Board of Trustees is comprised of 13 members chosen through election by the Board of Governors of the University of North Carolina, appointment by the Governor of North Carolina, and an ex officio member that is the President of the Student Government. It elects from within its membership a Chair, Vice Chair, Second Vice Chair, Secretary, and a Assistant Secretary who serve a term of one year. It consists of the following standing committees: Academic Affairs, and Personnel, Buildings and Property, Development, Executive, Finance and Planning, Nominating, and Student and Campus Affairs. It may also create committees as it deems appropriate. The newly elected chair is responsible for appointments to the standing committees and serves as an ex officio member of all standing committees except for the Nominating committee.

Also included are correspondence and oral history interviews relating to the book Knowledge Is Power, a history of the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences published in 1987. Materials range in date from 1911 to 2019. In 1905, the Board of Trustees of the North Carolina College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts (later North Carolina State University) first took up the suggestion of creating a dean for agriculture, but only under President Wallace Riddick (in 1917) was the position of dean created. In 1923, following the reorganization of North Carolina State College (later, University), the School (later, College) of Agriculture was created. In 1964, the School of Agriculture became the School of Agriculture and Life Sciences. In 1996, the School became the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, reflecting campus-wide changes in designation from School to College.

MoreThe Dean's Office records of the College of Humanities and Social Sciences at North Carolina State University contain general, administrative, and academic records from 1924 to 2016. The records in this subgroup consist of but are not limited to correspondences, annual reports, course and curriculum information, meeting minutes, news clipping, photographs, publications, committee and council proceedings, department head searches, budget reports, and materials pertaining to international programs and learning centers. First established as a distinct college in 1963, the College of Humanities and Social Sciences (CHASS) represents the intellectual core of the university, though it has gone through a series of transformations throughout North Carolina State University’s history. The first English and History courses were offered in 1889, when the College of Agriculture and Mechanical Arts opened. It wasn’t until 1937 that the departments of English, Modern Languages, History, Sociology, Psychology, and Ethics were all grouped together under the Basic Division. In 1952, the Basic Division was replaced by the School of General Studies, which was also non-degree-granting. However, in 1963 it was renamed again as the School of Liberal Arts (SLA) and was authorized to award degrees. The School of Liberal Arts would again undergo a name change in 1977, becoming the School of Humanities and Social Sciences (SHASS). Then, in 1987, SHASS was one of eight of the university’s academic schools to be re-designated as a college, becoming the College of Humanities and Social Sciences. As of 2009, CHASS is the second largest college at North Carolina State University.

The College of Physical and Mathematical Sciences (PAMS) at North Carolina State University was established in 1960 as the School of Physical Science and Applied Mathematics. The name of the school was changed to the School of Physical and Mathematical Sciences in 1977, and replaced "School" with "College" in 1987. The college currently had five major academic programs: Chemistry; Marine, Earth and Atmospheric Science; Mathematics; Physics; and Statistics. Instruction in some of these academic areas, such as chemistry and mathematics, dated back to the earliest years of the university. In 2013 the College of Physical and Mathematical was superceded by the College of Sciences.

All records come from the Institute for Emerging Issues and are related to the operations and actions of both the Institute itself and the conferences hosted and organized by the Institute. Of the records related to the conferences, a large portion of them are about the Emerging Issues Forum. The Institute of Emerging Issues at North Carolina State University was founded as a non-partisan public policy organization to enhance North Carolina’s long-term prosperity. It seeks to educate and engage North Carolinians through collaborating on new issues affecting the state’s economic competiveness. North Carolina State University's McKimmon Center for Extension and Continuing Education opened in 1976, but the history of continuing education at NCSU dates back even further. In 1960 North Carolina State University established what was formerly known as the Campus Planning Office, which updated the 1958 plan. It envisioned a compact, high rise, pedestrian-scaled campus based on a ten-minute walking radius--all essential services were to be within a ten-minute walk from a central location. The plan for the University's urban center was thus established. The Campus Planning Office has since been renamed the Design and Construction Services Department, located under the authority of the Facilities Division in the Office of Finance and Business.

MoreThis collection contains blueprints, drawings, notes, sketches, memoranda, surveys, photographic slides, and master plans relating to projects and initiatives undertaken by the Office of the University Architect. The majority of materials correspond to Edwin F. Harris’s tenure as Campus Planning Consultant, beginning in 1966, and later as director of Facilities Planning Division, a title which eventually became University Architect. However, the collection includes materials that pre-date Harris, as well as more recent additions to the collection. The mission of the University Architect is to plan the university's built environment, meaning not only campus buildings but also, especially under Edwin F. Abie Harris, the spaces between them. During Harris's tenure, some of the office's major projects included the initial planning of North Carolina State University's Centennial Campus, the development of a new physical masterplan, as well as the construction or renovation of several Main Campus buildings.

MoreThe Chinqua-Penn Plantation records contain the papers of the Penn family (1863-1975, bulk 1923-1946) as well as the records of the management of the property by the University of North Carolina, Greensboro, North Carolina State University, and the Chinqua-Penn Foundation (1921-1926, 1957-2002, bulk 1965-2002). This collection includes correspondence, reports, financial records, property and animal records, architectural drawings, photographs and scrapbooks, audio-visual materials, newspaper clippings, marketing materials, and inventories of the art, artifacts, and furniture collections, among other items. Within the materials dating from the management period are extensive records from research conducted on the property and the Penn family. Named for the chinquapin, a dwarf chestnut tree, Chinqua-Penn Plantation was built by Thomas Jefferson "Jeff" Penn and Margaret Beatrice "Betsy" Schoellkopf Penn during the 1920s. The large house reflected their lifestyle of entertaining and traveling, and it showcased the art and furniture they collected from around the world. The plantation's grounds evolved into an exotic horticultural collection of both native and imported plants. The Penns ran a dairy at Chinqua-Penn as well. After Betsy Penn's death in 1965, Chinqua-Penn was maintained by the University of North Carolina, Greensboro. When funding was cut in the late 1980s, the house was closed, but NCSU took over its management and reopened it shortly thereafter. In 1991, funding became a problem yet again, and the museum was closed a second time. A nonprofit organization called the Chinqua-Penn Foundation was formed by Reidsville, North Carolina, officials to preserve the house and open it to visitors. The foundation secured Chinqua-Penn Plantation status as a National Historic Landmark and reopened the house with state funding. Although NCSU continues to administer the Betsy-Jeff Penn 4-H Center on the mansion grounds, further funding problems forced the foundation to close the museum's doors. NCSU sold the house to a private owner in 2006.

The textual records include news releases, clippings, correspondence, university reports, university publications, and files and press information on faculty. The records also contain a number of audiovisual formats, including photographs, slides, and video cassettes of various types (VHS, Betacam SP, MBU 5s, UCA60), documenting broadcasts, press conferences, public service announcements and other media presentations. The materials date from 1896 to 2007. As of 2013, the Office of Public Affairs consisted of three divisions: Communications Services, News Services, and Web Communications. The News Services division uses a wide variety of methods to promote NC State University on local, national, and international levels. Staff members utilize traditional press releases, news tips, and direct contact with journalists to give the university, its scholarship and its research more visibility. They also distribute news stories electronically on listservs and web pages and distribute a list of faculty experts to assist the media and university representatives.

The files in the first several cartons are not separated by topic, but are inter-filed, according to alphabetical order. Materials range in date primarily from 1950s to 2019. The Vice Chancellor for University Advancement holds a position as an Executive Officer serving the Chancellor of the university.
